I think if we had faced that Man City side we would have had a chance if we had gone for it. Stones/Otamendy is a terrible centre back partnership and I've never rated Gundalin (excuse spelling) in midfield. I wonder if they played this line up with Nathan Ake in mind?

I don’t think you can really compare Howe at Bournemouth with Gracia or QSF here. You can’t just look at a bad run in a vacuum - Howe had earned the right to the Board’s loyalty from his previous form with the club. He is Bournemouth’s Graham Taylor. I don’t think the loyalty was blind. Also, see @Carpster ’s comments above about Bournemouth’s performance post lockdown. Equally, I’m sure many were surprised that Southampton kept the faith with Hasenhattl, but looked how that panned out for them. Sacking a manager at the first sign of a bump in the road isn’t always the best policy - as we know all too well.

Worth remembering that Dyche took Burnley down as well - kept the job and took them straight back up and has progressed in the PL of the back of that loyalty.

I think I prefer when we sacked one manager, and then announced the new one within about 20 minutes. This is boring

I’d like to see an appointment sooner rather than later, but I don’t think we can complain too much if they’re genuinely taking their time to make the right decision. We saw what a panicked ill thought out decision looks like when they reappointed QSF.

I agree. There's no need to rush. As long he's in place by August 17th when the players return, that's all we need. Clearly it'll happen before then and I expect an announcement next week.

But it's important to get the right man though, as expectation on him will be high. He's expected to get us promoted next season.

We all know that Bournemouth will now be chasing our targets of Struber, Ivic, Terry and Howe. Richard Hughes at it again.

Burnley are a much better run club and Dyche also recruited well, there are and have been very few passengers in that Burnley squad in the last few years , whereas you can't say the same for Bournemouth

I am a little puzzled by the great enthusiasm on this forum for Gerhard Struber. He seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment, even though he is very inexperienced.

He took over as coach of the Salzburg U-19 team in 2017-18, which was the season after the team had won the UEFA Youth League under Marco Rose, and the Salzburg U-19 team was eliminated by FC Porto in the round of the last 16. In July he was appointed as manager of FC Liefering, which is a feeder club for Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian 2nd League, but he left in January 2019 to focus on taking his UEFA Pro Licence. FC Liefering won 6 and lost 8 of his 15 matches in charge.

He replaced Christian Ilzer at Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga in July 2019, when Ilzer was appointed as manager of Austria Wien. Wolfsberger AC was ranked in third place after 14 games, the same as the season before, before Struber left the club to take up the appointment at Barnsley in November 2019. Wolfsberger AC gathered five points out of six games to finish bottom of Group J in the UEFA Europa League, although they did win 4-0 away at Borussia M*nchengladbach in their first game of the group.

He turned around a struggling Barnsley from a seemingly hopeless position and the team played some attractive football, but they only avoided relegation due to the points deduction for Wigan. He might be successful as first team coach at Watford, but his appointment would represent an enormous gamble.

I don’t think he’ll come to us but to my mind the best of the candidates to be mentioned is Eddie Howe by far.

Hopefully JT having such short odds is all a ploy to get Bournemouth to swoop in and appoint him.

Wouldn’t be against Eddie Howe if he came. However, I’d be massively against him bringing Tindall with him. That guy is a complete tw*t. In reality, I don’t think Howe will be interested anyway and I expect he will take a break and take a PL job later in the season.

Although Deeney will 100% stay given the amount of penalties we would get.

Yes Wolfsberger finished bottom of their group in the UEFA League, but they were in a group with one of the richest teams in Turkey (who have Premier League alumni Clichy, Skrtel, Inler, Robinho and Demba Ba playing for them) along with Roma and Gladbach - 5 points from 6 games is actually a great result there.

Yes Barnsley only avoided relegation due to the points deduction for Wigan, but Struber took 40 points from 30 games - that puts them 13th from when he took over until the season end in the form table - again, that's pretty good going considering Barnsley are a newly promoted team..

Abject failure at Leyton Orient and Notts County. No thanks. We should be taking people with positive recent records. Managers who can bring a winning mentality with them.

Whilst he wasn’t the greatest defender the worlds seen, I’m still completely baffled how he was so overlooked in his last seasons with us. When you look at the players who were preferred over him, just another indication that when it’s comes to defenders at this club, we are clueless.

One should not read too much into the UEFA Europa League results. Borussia Monchengladbach played virtually a reserve team when they were defeated 0-4 at home. Wolfsberger AC did also draw 1-1 at home and 2-2 away to Roma, but Roma did not play a full-strength team in either game.

Struber has only 18 months experience, in total, as the manager of three different league teams and six months of those were at FC Liefering in the Austrian 2nd Division, which is not of a very high standard. Admittedly most of their players are sent by Red Bull Salzburg and are very young. Wolfsberger AC had not improved on their position from the previous season while he was there. Red Bull Salzburg always dominate the Austrian Bundesliga, but the other team above Wolfsberger at that point in the season was LASK, who finished in 4th place at the end of the season behind Wolfsberger (in 3rd place). Rapid Vienna, managed by Didi Kuhbauer finished in 2nd place behind Red Bull Salzburg.

Struber has been at Barnsley just over 8 months and he did turn around a struggling team from a seemingly hopeless position (as I noted). You wrote that "Struber took 40 points from 30 games - that puts them 13th from when he took over until the season end in the form table". He clearly did make an impact, but you should not ignore the important role played by Maximilian Senft (who was also his assistant manager at Wolfsberger). Maximilian Senft was responsible for the analysis and had previous experience as an assistant manager, including at Austria Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga. Senft has now returned to Austria for family reasons and has gone back to one of his previous clubs (Pinkafeld, who play in the regional league in Burgenland) where he has been appointed as manager. Struber left his family (including two young children) in Austria when he went to Barnsley so he could also face family issues.

I did write that Struber might be successful as first team coach at Watford, but do you not agree that his appointment would be an enormous gamble?
