Puel would be ideal. He is very good at organising teams and keeping clean sheets. However, we would need to invest heavily on defenders no matter what manager comes in. We certainly have the pace to play his counter-attacking style, but could do with a quick forward, personally I would play Welbeck centrally although admittedly would be a risk as he will likely get injured.

Gerrard is crap! He has done nothing really at Rangers and just whinges and blames everyone else when his team is crap. You would think Villa would be better defensively with John Terry there but they are usually all over the place at the back and have the second-worst defence in the league.

I'd go for the Joka, especially if we went down.

I know he failed badly at Flem in the Premier League, but I think he has enough credit in the bank to be seen as a strong but fair coach, which a good tactical knowledge. I'm not sure if there was any bad blood last time, as I believe the only reason he didn't stay was over money.

But money shouldn't be too much of an issue for him now, as he's currently employed by Al Gharafa. Depends if he would want to come back to English football, or is happy where he is.

PREMIER LEAGUE: If the status quo remains the same, Eusebio Di Francesco - would be good fun for a while and at least he’s Italian so better chance of decent communication with hierarchy. Will end in tears at some point but I think that will happen to anyone if bigger changes aren’t made.

CHAMPIONSHIP: If the status quo remains the same, Slavisa Jokanovic - proven at that level and knows the conditions he will be working under and has been successful with them in the past.

PREMIER LEAGUE: If the club do a root and branch review and change the necessary things: Giovanni Van Bronckhorst - has been successful elsewhere, plays good football and has studied under Pep at City whilst out of work.

CHAMPIONSHIP: If the club do a root and branch review and change the necessary things: No idea at this point. Struber at Barnsley has been getting decent reviews but I really don’t know. I’d have said Bilic were he available.

Jesse Marsch is another I’d put up as a suggestion. Is part of the Red Bull family so could be hard to get - but did a great job at New York before leaving to be an assistant at Leipzig. Then took over at Salzburg and did the double this season.

Leipzig have Nagelsmann having previously had Hassenhuttl and Salzburg previously had Marco Rose who is doing a brilliant job at M’Gladbach. That organisation know how to spot a decent coach far better than ours. An example of putting faith in coaches, signing young talent and actually keeping them in house with decent game-time.

But again, as ever, we would really need to change the way we operate. Or get Gino to sell to Red Bull.

Zola threw away automatic promotion with an inept set up at Peterborough. how we let them beat us i will never know. He was a one trick pony and that pony was called Abdi. Without Almen Abdi, Zola would not have coached us into the top ten of the Championship.

The best football we played was under Slither until his Rogers like conversion to the cause of another club.

If we get relegated and we want an honest British manager i would go for Chris Hughton . Stay up and any unheard of who does not need a translator by their side.

It'll be someone we've never heard of and it'll end with one of the follow scenarios.

    A) If we get relegated, will be sacked if we're not in the play-offs by Christmas
    B) If we get relegated, will be sacked if we're in the bottom half of the table after 10 games
    C) If we get relegated, will be sacked if we go on a bad run of form at any point in the season.
    D) Will be sacked after achieving promotion from the Championship via the play-offs.
    E) Will be sacked after achieving promotion from the Championship automatically.
    F) If we are still in the Premier League, will be sacked if we're in the bottom 3 after 10 games.
    G) If we are still in the Premier League, will be sacked if we're on a bad run of form between games 11-38
    H) Will be sacked at any point if Giraldi doesn't like him.
    I) Will be sacked at any point if Deeney doesn't like him.
    J) Will be sacked at any point if the squad doesn't like him.
    K) Will be sacked at any point should he question the transfer policy.

That's what happens when the owners and board fully believe they have the right manager. Yes Southampton got absolutely tanked, it would've been easy for Southampton to easily implode after that (although they weren't doing too hot at the time anyway) or sack him, but they gave time to turn it round. Ralph and the players have done superbly to do just that and now they're comfortably mid-table. We lack that plan and belief so just chuck the blame onto the manager and want to move onto the next one whenever the going gets slightly tough.

Have to think about which managers would take the job.

We now have a reputation for ruthless decisions and a set-up that means head coaches have little power or authority over players or transfers.

That means you're looking for a manager who:

    1) thinks a brief stint at Watford will push him up the ladder, despite the inevitable sacking (Silva)

    2) has a reputation can survive being sacked by the Watford circus (arguably Sannino, Flores I)

    3) needs to get back into the game so open to the risk (Zola, Slav, Mazzarri, Gracia, Flores II, Pearson)

Given that, Puel makes sense in that second category. He's a perfectly fine (albeit no more than that) manager.

Di Francesco is the type of manager who sounds appealing by name, and would fit in that second category, too. No idea if he's a real match in terms of set-up, authority, etc. I wonder if we're not a big enough club for him. Can't see it happening.

Just speculating on why there is this fear. Previous seasons have seen us safe due to first half results-we have never had such a poor start so the panic is real i agree

Looking at Norwich last season they had only £9m of broadcast income along with £10m of gate receipts/season tickets plus £12m from commercial/catering Wages £43m. Then there other running costs. Result they lost £33m. They used their cash reserves and a £20m overdraft to fund this.

For us being relegated we would have parachute money-what £48m in year 1 but possibly little other revenue as the usual other sources are not currently there as ground is closed. Our wages were £84m so even if these all dropped by half that equates to almost all the parachute money. Also last year we spend £38m on other costs-no detail provided but similar size clubs (Burnley/Palace) spent half of that so its not all related to the ground or players. Maybe that cost will be a lot lower now

But we owed (as at June 19) £70m in external debt plus £50m in transfer payments. Since July 19 we will have spent c £30m net on Sarr +Pussetto (after the Lukbakio receipts) and we borrowed against the PL TV money to help with this.

If you were the lender owed £70m might you be pressing hard to get this debt repaid if you drop out of PL and the value potentially of your players falls. You still have to settle the transfer fees owed and the bank who lent against the TV money (as well as all this compo to Gracia/QSF and now NP)

How would we fund new player purchases with reduced assets/TV money to borrow against and potentially pressure from an unrelated third party lender. I don't know the answers but guess our financial situation in the Championship has spurred the owners to this action. Whilst BMuff have more debt than us it is all owed to the owner.

  27. UEA_Hornet

And even that assumes parachute payments won't be reduced in line with any reduction in tv income anticipated but not paid to the PL. That's very much on the cards from what I've read.

You wouldn’t seriously have Joka in the premier league would you? With our defenders??

Fulham shipped 81 goals, yes that’s 81 goals with a goal difference -47 with him in charge.

For reference the all time record unsurprisingly is Derby, who let in 89.

But Fulham spent £100m on players, Derby certainly didn’t.

What’s your rationale for him avoiding the all time record, let alone being successful with our rag tag bunch of defenders?

You cannot always look like for like between Watford and Fulham. I'm expecting at two new central defenders of better quality and Estupinan, plus maybe a new central striker along with Cucho and Suarez.

I didn't really think we were a disaster defensively under him previously. He's had two promotions with Watford and Fulham, and I did say I go for him especially if we went down.

Fulham did spend a lot of money, but they didn't seem to buy well. Joka seems to accept the Watford way of working, he worked in the Premier League before and the fans really liked him. Lots of plus points.

I think he's very good at tactical alterations during a game, which is not something we've had in a while. Javi, Pearson and Flores were not good at this. It was mostly plan A, and if that didn't work, we'd end up losing.

Put it this way, he can command of the squad (with his hard stare) and he has proved he's good tactically. I think he's a decent shout.

81 goals conceded is a giant red flag to anyone.

It’s such an alarming number that you can’t just explain it away by saying you can’t compare Fulham with Watford, especially when it’s a common view that is our defence is some way below the required standard.

For a manager to succeed at Watford they need to make the defence greater than the sum of its parts, he made a Fulham defence worse than the sum of its parts.

Im not sure he’s the tactical genius you make him out to be. He certainly wasn’t afraid to make changes and take risks but that’s likely to pay off more in the championship when you’re playing inferior opposition with better players relative to them.

There was no tactical genius in the premier league on show, or respect from players, just spectacular failure.

If you’d honestly have a manger take charge of our defence whose premier league record is played 38 conceded 81, then you’re certainly a braver more optimistic man than me.

Edit: I’ve just realised he was sacked by Fulham so didn’t preside over all 81 goals, but he was sacked after a run of 7 defeats.

I think he'd be a risk in the prem but great in the champ. I know QSF successfully kept us up but I'd have loved to have seen Joka manage us with a 3-5-2 formation in the prem with Abdi, a slim Deeney and Vydra/Ighalo in the 11. We may have conceded a hatful but at least it would have been entertaining. All our FBs in the prem would have been more effective as Wing backs.

There was more going on at Fulham than the average bystander see’s. Which culminated in their head of recruitment being dismissed. I think a lot of the PL season was a rug pulled out from under Jokanovic’s feet.

I’d definitely take him in the championship, but I think people would then need to accept if he got us promoted we probably wouldn’t keep him.

If we remove our own nostalgic view, if we were looking to appoint a different manager with his PL record as our next manager in the PL, I think we’d all be fairly horrified.

Would have Joka back regardless of which league we are in. Sadly won’t happen as he won’t want to work with our basket case owners again!! I don’t for one second buy the ‘priced himself out of the job’ line either from the club. They wanted QSF as soon as our promotion was confirmed!
