Ah yes, I remember this fondly, was on holiday at the time, really thought we'd go one better than the year before and they'd struggle, but they ended up above us! At least it was just a temporary aberration though!

Virtually a reserve side? The side Gladbach put out started a total of 270 Bundesliga games between them this season (out of a potential 374) - that's not a reserve side, that's a majority of their main starting 11 with a slight rotation in a couple of positions.

It is a slight gamble, but a majority of managerial appointments are. Whilst he may have lost his assistant, seeing fans of most Championship clubs saying on Twitter each week that Barnsley were one of the best sides they'd faced this season gives me enough confidence that Struber can implement a great style of football, and i'm sure that his assistant isn't responsible for that.

Struber to Bournemouth sounds like a good fit and the kind of manager they'd go for. Wouldn't be surprised if they went after him and would probably offer him more money than we would.

I accept that I exaggerated when I described the Monchengladbach team (beaten 0-4 by Wolfsberger) as virtually a reserve side, but it was certainly some way from their strongest team. For example, only six of that starting team started in the recent 3-0 home victory against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga and only seven started in the final 2-1 home victory against Hertha Berlin.

I still maintain that the appointment of Struber as first team coach would be an enormous gamble rather than a slight gamble, although he might turn out to be a great success, but every one is entitled to their own opinion. I am showing my age, but I am a little wary of appointing any manager on the basis of one good season (or in this case part of a season). George Kirby was chosen in 1971 to replace Ken Furphy, who was the manager of Watford when they were promoted to the Championship (formerly Division 2) for the first time in 1969. Kirby was regarded as a young and upcoming coach. He had managed Halifax, who played great attacking football in Division 1 (formerly Division 3) and had just missed out on promotion to the Championship in his first season. Kirby led Watford to relegation from the Championship in his first season and just avoided relegation from Division 1 in his second season before being dismissed. I know that it was a different age for football and that Watford's circumstances are now very different but I use the example to illustrate the danger of making judgements based on one good season, although I am not suggesting that Struber would lead Watford to relegation.

So Gotti has signed a deal to be Udinese’s manager for 2 years and he caps it off with a very good win away at Sassuolo. Okaka scoring again. Udinese finishing 13th.

The drinks break after 22 minutes in each half really does Okaka the world of good.

He managed to still be standing after 53 minutes for the ball to ricochet off him to score the winner, and he only needed to be hooked up to the iron lung after finally collapsing into a heap 7 minutes from time.

We'll never be able to afford to bring him home now if they carry on playing in quarters after this season :(

While I think it is unlikely Nolan would be considered you can’t judge a coach on his first two jobs at basket case League 2 teams. Their players were so bad the old boy had to register as a player.

    But if we are:

32 defeats out of 99 games gives Manager Nolan a 32% loss rate.
Graham Taylor 418 defeats out of 1,342 games gives a loss rate of 31%
    Sean Dyche 136 defeats from 396 - 34%
    Gerhard Struber 19 defeats from 53 - 36%
    Eddie Howe 203 defeats from 545 - 37%
    Hassenhuttl 133 defeats from 428 - 31%
    Ivic 24 defeats from 151 - 16%

So in context Nolan can not be said to be an abject failure as a manager. Certainly Howe has no recent record of delivering a winning mentality, and by this quick list does not look like a stand out candidate. Nolan is doing well at West Ham. Will be a future manager of some note IMHO

Lol, no point throwing out raw stats without context. Sol Campbell (NB, I don't want him as our next manager!) has lost nearly half his games as manager, yet under the circumstances has done a far better job than Nolan

Suspect we'll see some more movement on this one way or another in the next few days, hopefully the manager and a player or two will be finalised by Friday in time for the kit launch. Looks like Gotti is staying, either of the two main contenders would be great

That’s clearly not correct - losing 50% of the games as a manager is not better than losing 32% of games. As I said, it is just a hunch that Nolan will make a mark in the game as a successful coach/manager.

In the context of the squads he had, the resources available, his record in 100 games as manager is not poor. He got Orient within two points of the League 2 play offs, before being removed as manager in the April of that season. At Notts County in League 2, he took over in January where they were staring relegation from the league in the face after a straight ten defeats, and he got them to safety.

Anyway in the that context of Sol Campbell managing Southend to relegation this year, not sure how Campbell rates as a better manager.

"We never talked about Watford, we talked about possibility of continuing together with Udinese. From tomorrow we'll start discussing how to think about going forward together"

So as thought, he was never in the frame.

I think sadly he is out of the loop in terms of everything at the club now, his article on what might happen to the players after relegation looked like it was written by one of the twitter bloggers with no inside info at all.

Win %'s for managers are of little use. The most successful managers would be the ones who finish in the playoffs each season but never get promoted. Get 2 successive promotions then hang on for 4 years and you look awful ! In the prem, finishing 8th with spurs each season would look better than finishing 12th with Sheff Utd.

I would like to correct one comment which I wrote. Gerhard Struber was in charge of Wolfsberger AC for only their first four games in the Europa League. His team took 4 points from 4 games with the away win at Borussia Monchengladbach and a 1-1 draw at home to Roma, but lost both home and away to Istanbul Basaksehir.

I wonder why Red Bull Salzburg decided, when Marco Rose left in June 2019, to appoint Jesse Marsch as manager (who was the assistant manager at RB Leipzig) if Gerhard Struber is as good as some people suggest. Red Bull Salzburg do sometimes appoint their managers from their feeder club, FC Liefering.

Because Marsch is a better fit for the club? Or a more accomplished coach? That doesn’t necessarily mean Struber isn’t or wasn’t good enough at all.

I’m confused by you saying Struber would be an enormous gamble. Any coach is a gamble and doesn’t come with guaranteed success or tick all the boxes fans want - and those that are close to that, are unattainable. It’s like those fans who kept saying we needed a PL proven goalscorer - everyone wants that. Hence why they are hard to find and then have plenty of suitors (of which we would be way down) if they are available.

Struber has shown he can perform in different countries, has a good recent win percentage with a lesser team, is familiar with the league and ticks the two boxes the fans are very concerned about - playing good football and playing exciting younger players. It’s a gamble in that any reasonable appointment is a gamble - but it certainly wouldn’t be an enormous one.

Gino or someone at the club will leak out a few stories to the media about trying to sign someone decent - Plan's A & B (usually enough for our fans to say look at how far we've come, much ambition, much wow) but ultimately they've already settled on Plan C (Plan Cheap) at the beginning.
