I think that is generous to say the least.

JB as usual , talking absolute balls without checking any facts

Think Greece 2004.....tactically , with the right man in charge , we could sneak somewhere in these euros , micro manage each game and the opponents , i think he could well do better than previous managers and without paying them 5 million a year

The more I think about it, the more I think Woy could do a far better job people believe.

England are an international side and managing an international side is way different from managing a domestic side. It's too easy to look at world football and say 'X or Y should manage England because they've managed well at domestic level'. It didn't work with Cappello or GT or Keegan or McClaren and it barely worked with Sven. A successful club CV doesn't always translate to international level. You only get to work with the players once every few months. They've obviously looked at it and were attracted by Hodgson's international background, the fact he's available cheaply and the fact he's more of a 'political' appointment, able to work with those already employed by the FA and in the development of the new football centre at Burton.

Personally, I would have thought Harry mad had he been offered the job and accepted it. Let's face it, hardly anybody cares about the England side most of the time. We all moan when we can't watch Watford because of international breaks. People label England friendlies as 'meaningless'. We have the most high intensity top division in Europe, we play TWO cup competitions and the Champions League..and when there are free weekends, clubs fly across the world to play friendlies for large sums of money. And we don't take a winter break. In other words, we barely give England a second glance...UNTIL a summer tournament comes around. But then lots of our players are knackered or injured because of playing non stop since July..so we always bomb it.

Coupled with the fact that our long term planning has been dire..only now are we building the sort of football centre that countries like France and Germany have had for years. If I were a top English manager, a Redknapp or O'Neill or Pardew, no way would I quit the excitement of the Prem League and the day to day involvement with the players to take on the impossible job. Sven and Fabio only did so because of the crazy salary they were offered..and Hodgson probably has because he realises that, after his unfortunate Anfield experience, he won't go any higher in the domestic game.

I think Hodgson was the only realistic appointment that could of been made anyway, Redknapp has way too much baggage with him.

Happy enough with this appointment. Internationally experienced and pretty astute tactically. Think he's capable of building sometime long-term, looking toward the next World Cup, as long as the media give him a break. I really hope he uses this tournament as a chance to get the younger guys like Welbeck, Sturridge etc some experience of playing at that high level, with the next World Cup in mind.

Prepared to give him the benefit and think he may surprise a few people. Harry would have been the people's choice but I think cost and baggage were considerations.

Problem is you can't make a silk cloth out of a sow's ear and our current crop of players are at best reasonable but not the world beaters which the media will expect.

    At least he is English.

I think Rooney could hang with the best of them. Aside from him, I don't think there is anybody who would even get into a top German/Spanish team's first eleven. Ashley Cole of a couple of years ago was one of the best in the world, but he has fallen off recently.

So one, from a country of 40m+.

I bet the London based media are drowning their sorrows today.

Listening last night their main gripe against Hodgson was that he isn't a good interviewee like old Redknapp.

If it was based on which managers could make the most sound bites then Aidy Boothroyd really would stand a chance!

The facts are that throughout his his career Hodgson has mostly over-achieved with average teams and failed when it comes to managing big clubs like Inter and Liverpool and big players as well as the strain of the inevitable media pressure.

The stats are not on the other hand you talking hypothetically about what might happen; that is absolute balls and complete speculation.

Joe Hart? If not yet he certainly has the potential to be one of the best.

I agree with Rooney, he has single handedly kept United in the Premiership race. Apart from Rooney we have nothing, Joe Hart is our next best player but he isn't world class like most people say he is, yet.

We needed an Enhlsihman who has experience of international football and major tournaments.

Redknapp, while a media darling, doesn't and would have been expensive, and while we are at it, what's he won?

Glenn Hoddle would've been better and knows what the jobs about but Roy'll do.

Okay, I would have preferred Redknapp, but Hodgson will do. However, I cannot believe the FA have done this again... a 4 year deal? We've only got 2 years until the end of the next World Cup. Why the need for such a long term contract, when - if it's not working out - they'll be forced to sack him and probably pay a substantial abount of £££ for the privelege. 2 years would have sufficed. It's not as though Spain are going to come calling... so make it a rolling/shorter term deal.

Anyway, aside from that, I hope he does a good job, and i'm sure he will.

TBH, nothing the FA does surprises me anymore. It's highly unlikely he will see out the contract as manager anyway, but it's not my money. They can waste it as much as they like.

Hodgson is now part of the FA machine, so if he fails at management he will be put in a Technical Director role. It's all to do with St George's Park at Burton.

Hodgson is the second best man for the job.

Underwhelming and you can see where things could easily go wrong.

However, the contract is signed now and there's nothing anyone can do about it so the press and public should just get off of his back now, get behind him (117%) and let him get on with the job in hand.

I agree and understand the contract is signed, and I hope he goes on to be very successful for England.

But it really does make me wonder whether the FA will ever actually learn from any of their past mistakes.

  33. El distraído

    El distraído Johnny Foreigner

I have zero faith in the FA, and have had none for years now. JB is absolutely right though (for once!), the contract is signed now so we should just get behind him and give him our support, but a 2 year contract would have been much better. What if Hodgson wouldn't sign a 2 yr contract? Well then he was never the right man for the job in the first place.

GT himself said that too...he suggested Redknapp would only be interested in the short term and not bothered about bringing through youngsters for the future etc.

I of course echo your sentiment and wish him all the success in the world. But you can see it already, even in the first press conference, the media are not with him.

Hodgson looked like a rabbit who spotted a fox licking his lips. He is so uncomfortable in media situations, and I think the England manager has to be able to come across smooth, confident and even throw in the odd joke or two. This will be overlooked if he gets England winning, but will be a noose to hang him by if he does not. The press will ridicule him because they did not want him.

He is a good manager, there's no doubt about that, but can he handle top players? I've heard his training methods are too rigid and boring. Players soon get unhappy with this, as at Liverpool. It may work when he only sees the players seldom, but I get the feeling he'll turn out to be another Steve McClaren. Very good on paper, has all the coaching badges etc, but is just missing the "x-factor" ingredient.
