Surely it just depends who negotiates what? Some players have contracts that say if the club sells them and they've not requested the transfer they're entitled to compensation of a percentage of the fee the club gets. There's all sorts out there.

if I'm Joka, I'm pretty aware of the fact that if WFC are looking like relegation fodder at the end of November, there's every chance I'm out of a job.

The Pozzos will surely want to do whatever they have to to retain Premier League status - including replacing Joka if they feel that's a productive move. We've already seen that with McKinlay.

So I don't blame him wanting to secure as much as he can financially...I'm hoping an agreement can be reached, but I can see why Joka would want the best financial deal possible.

Most people weren't that thrilled with Bepps. Some thought Garcia was a mistake (before he cried off sick). Even the Pozzos thought that McKinlay was a mistake, after they had appointed him. The Pozzos may be bright football people, but they're not infallible.

And maybe it's not just money. If I had done as great a job as Joker has, I'd be affronted if my boss thought so little of me that he was only willing to offer a one-year deal.

Yep, & every change of manager is a gamble even if the new guy has an excellent track record elsewhere. There's lots of great managers/head coaches out there but it's not a given that the Pozzos can just appoint someone else & everything'll be fine.

I personally think that the idea that a change of manager would be fine is wrong, we should be doing our upmost to keep him. He is only the third manager in our history to get us promoted to the Premier League, so it's not like they come around easily. Sky are saying its money but it's been mentioned that it's about the amount of years. If i were them, i would assure him that this is the best place to manage, as it's clear that he is having doubts.

I think eventually he will sign, but having continuing uncertainty won't help, and I would rather get this sorted out now so that we can end the rumours. The one thing that is different to other clubs is that we do seem to adopt an approach of seeing the head coach on the same level as the players, so the Pozzos will be deciding his future just like with their players, and have to be realistic

IMO he is the best man to manage this team, end of

I completely agree. We shouldn't cry when the time comes for players to be sold etc. It's a fundamental part of our type of setup. The Pozzos are businessman and will always be looking to pocket some dosh whilst reinvesting the rest to continue to be successful. Like you said, they aren't going to leave us high and dry - that would be an utterly daft move given that the value of their business is firmly tied to our competitiveness.

I guess what I was getting at is that for better or worse fans can be fickle, sentimental creatures in a way businessmen are not. This new regime is so different from the old Watford way that you have to forgive people a bit when they get swept up in the excitement of it all, particularly as many might be newer fans recently recruited to our cause. We've had it really good so far, enjoying the best the Pozzo system has to offer without too many of the downsides. Even the most pragmatic of us takes that for granted these days, and it's only compounded by the hangover from the old regime that causes us to form unhealthy attachments to certain individuals or matchday seats that we struggle to comprehend ever not being there.

The romantic in me wishes Zola was still manager, but in hindsight the cold reality was that he wasn't good enough and the decision had to be made. The hard decisions will continue to come, and I'm starting to suspect Joka not signing/Pozzos looking elsewhere for a new manager will be next. That's going to be a real shock to the system for some. God forbid if we ever leave the Vic. When Joka signed a lot of fans were saying 'FFS Pozzos...who the hell is this clown' and words to that effect. Since then their decision has been vindicated and Joka's done a fantastic job in getting us to the Prem. He's so well regarded by the fans now that if he doesn't sign it will be an aberration to some and 'FFS Pozzos' all over again. I actually agree we should be doing everything to keep him, but it may well be we get someone unbelievably good in to replace him.

Whilst some people may genuinely not get the way they work, most of us accept the theory of the Pozzo way because of where we came from and how far they've brought us so far. Unfortunately business is all about making those unpopular decisions and the rough reality is that the decisions that take us up to the next level sure as hell aren't going to be popular.

Completely agree. It would destroy the momentum of getting promoted.

Given the riches of the Premier League, giving Slav a longer contract is just a calculated risk and not that massive. Most clubs had freeloaders like Dyer and McGugan on the wage bill, which it technically the owners chucking money away. Surely they factor that into budgets, so do the same for the manager.

I find it highly unlikely that it's unreasonable. If we are in a bidding war with Newcastle and Sunderland, we will have to pay to keep him.

Well, we just don't know. I'm sure the Pozzos have a wage structure for Head Coaches just like they do for players. If they think he isn't worth it, we'll find someone else. Granada have been through 7 Head Coaches since they got promoted in 2011.

We may not know, but we can surmise. I would prefer we keep the coach that knows the players and got us promoted and think that the Pozzo's should pay what it takes.

To go in to our first PL season with everything up in the air and another new coach seems a bit stupid IMO.

That view is the equivalent of player power. We have no idea whether Joka would be a success in the Premier. Just look at Hollowhead's performance after getting Palace up.

The owners have to mark a line in the sand as to the limit they will pay for a manager. I would have thought that the better option is to offer Joka a very big bonus if he keeps Watford up.

In fairness Holloway was actually very average that season. He took over a team who were performing very well under Freedman and almost missed out on the playoffs. No surprise when he failed.

Jokanovic casually strolled in and waltz through the Championship like it was beneath him all along.

I agree about the line in the sand. Mine is based on an assumption that he won't be unreasonable in his demands. He doesn't seem the sort that would hold the club to ransom, but I do believe he deserves an excellent contract in reward for his success both in results and installing the correct ethic amongst the players.

Said it before on another thread. £30K p.w. for two years would be fair in the great scheme of things given the size of our club and what others currently pay. If he held out for much more than that then he'd be greedy and if he was offered significantly less then he'd be entitled to feel under appreciated seeing all he's achieved so far imho.

We shouldn't be held to ransom by whatever stupidity the Geordies and Mackems might get up to but we should make him a realistic offer both in wages and continuity of contract.

If there's any criticism of the Pozzos it's that they consistently undervalue the role of the head coach at all of their clubs. Sure, if he doesn't cut it then move on but, having found a gem for us they should make every reasonable effort to keep him even if that means stepping outside of their usual model. Head coaches aren't just two-a-penny and freely interchangeable in the way that many players are. They have an entirely different role and influence which is, imho, undervalued by the Pozzos in relation to the players.

What we need for the start of next season is the continuity that will be generated by the man who got us there remaining at the helm. He's proven himself professionally in any number of ways since the new year and is liked and appreciated by the players and his staff. He ticks all the boxes. It would be entirely negative if there was another change and the perception that we're a basket case might gain some credence again, including amongst the players who would be entitled to think WTF!!

However, if he gets a silly offer from up north and that's what he'd prefer then there's nothing we can, or should, do about it.

Demands too high, offer too small, or just a case of both sides trying to get the best deal they can before signing?

I don't think we know at this point.

It's called negotiations, this is what happens in any job.

Pozzos would be too smart to let him walk, unless his demands are ludicrous. People might say the Pozzos will find a replacement, but will they? Jokanovic has been head and shoulders above the other coaches they picked and him leaving would introduce a HUGE element of risk. The one thing a good businessman avoids is risk, therefore they will almost certainly find a compromise.

Sure. But maybe he's given up on that idea for the time being anyway, in which case he can go wherever the hell he likes. As has been said though, all is speculation but what else are we supposed to do in the meantime?
