The thing is though that's not really true. Putting it simply, the FA can't afford to run quotas in a climate where the grassroots game is several thousand referees short. At the moment they struggle to get any referees, let alone having time to specially advance the careers of minorities!

As i have stated before the whole point of the problem is that he was saying that women have no place in football... this is not true anymore.
There are fully fledged womens leagues, there is a very popular womens world cup, in both of these women and men officiate.
Who is MN to say that a female is not competant enough to officiate a football match in the league system.
She would have to go through exactly the same training as the men and most likely under more trying circumstances considering that it has been up until recent years a very male dominated sport.
My nephew is currently doing an NVQ in football and refereeing is an integral part of the course along with physiotherapy and sports psychology, the latter is only a very small part.On the course he is on there are 14 pupils 4 of which are female.. this leads me to believe that in the near future there will be an awful lot more female referees and assistants so MN saying what he did will undermine what the FA is trying to do which is bringing the game into the 21st century.
IMO the FA would have been wrong if they had not issued a punishment for this.

    UAE,

The main difference is that Football League referees are high profile, and so are considered to be setting a visible benchmark for minorities (mind you in this case women are probably the overall majority in society generally).

In addition in my playing days our referees did not get more than a gallon of petrol as expenses - the rewards are much more tangible now.

In short there is a degree of `social reward` and monetary benefit if you are appointed to referee in the leagues at the highest levels of the game.

Amy Rayner is an assistant referee in the Football League. If she gets more than £100 a match I'd be surprised. Tangible yes, but hardly worth it for all the aggro unless you love your job. I certainly don't buy this conspiracy theory intertwined with political correctness. In fact I think the whole concept of political correctness is something dreamt up by the right wing media to justify all kinds of bigotry - but maybe that's for another debate :)

Political correctedness in itself is wrong to the degree that it undermines the entire fragment of a free society, freedom of speech and what have you.
However in the world we live in today there has to be some kind of influence in what is said and what isnt.
Predjudice in itself is not a politically correctedness issue persay, its a moral issue and bases on a person right to not feel predjudiced against or made to feel inadequate for the colour of their skin their sex or look, in essence not be bullied.
If your child is bullied at school because he wears glasses, or is fat, you would have the right to stop it, the same way that a comment like that of MN was in effect bullying and belittling to the female referees in this country so something HAD to be done to show it was unacceptable.
If you call a black man a spade for instance you are being racist, which in itself in a multiracial society in which we live cannot be acceptible, if it was allowed then this country would fall into complete and utter internal warfare between rival races faster than drogba diving in the box.

One of the main problems (aside from others mentioned earlier) is that Political Correctness is a damn sight more correct for certain sectors of our society than others.

I work in a very large industry that employs a wide range of people from many ethnic and religous backgrounds and from both sexes (three if you count the one trans-sexual). I have also undergone a threee day diversity course.

To put it politely, people of certain backgrounds are extremely thin skinned and will raise an harrassment case for what many people on these boards would consider trivial issues. e.g. if a workmate were to call me a mad paddy or tell an Irish joke in my company, unless it was done in a agressive manner then to all intents it would be like water off a ducks back, the same attitude is taken by most English, Scots and Irish (even Yorkshiremen who take more than their fair share of stick).

The problem is what is one persons harmless banter, is not anothers, or so it would seem. Many employees know full well that a sucessful tribunal case can be lucrative in terms of compensation payments.

i remember seeing a similar story in the daily mail once. Something along the lines of, 'political correctness gone mad, - harmless racist jokes have led to the monemuntal pay out of couple of grand for a black man! stop this madness now..'

its frustrating but unfortuantely the way of the world we live in..
The judges should remember what we were all told when i was a boy.. sticks and stones may break our bones but names will never hurt me... instead of going over the top with payments for "damages"

I know where you are coming from Fan, my attitude is to steer well clear of any banter of this nature even if you think you know the person well. There are problems however for people who land themselves in a situation when they genuinely meant no harm and when reporting on a case of this nature I sometimes find it very difficult to remain objective.

It is a subject probably best left to other MBs.

Political Correctness is going mad. I sit with my 8 year old girl most nights while she reads her schools reading books to me. I know times move on but as a nation we are scared to offend anyone. When i was a kid at school it was Peter and Jane books, now because we can't miss out any minority even i struggle with the names. How do you explain to an 8 year old how to read Yashawini or Jagajeevan and which is the boy or the girl. She can't sing bah bah b**** sheep. There is no way I'm racists but please this is getting silly.

its worth pointing out the comment i made was sarcastic. A couple of grand for what amounted to constant racial abuse at his place of work, yet the papers still lambasted it as being PC gone mad.
The white male middle classess have never been so vicitmised eh?

The names in a book are such a small thing to anger yourself over. Why does it bother you so much?

It angers me because you teach your kids how to split words up into segments if they can't read a word ie. Cor-rect-ness. With those names it is very hard as are some English names The schools do not need to this. Stick with Peter and Jane. I will also point out these sort of names have been in all her books from about 5 years old. So a typical sentence would read. "Jagajeevan pats the dog the dog liked it." See my point? Why couldn't it be Peter pats the dog......
    That's my point
