See, now this is taking a snapshot of the conversation to push an opinion of an ex-player. That was as “negative” as he got. He also said that we are playing some very good football and are not simply a team who lumps it forward to Deeney. Also he felt we should be pushing for top 8 this season. Yes he mentioned the changing managers but it can’t be denied that, having been reasonably stable, for us at least, this summer that we are starting to play some of our best football in the Premier League.

  4. He said nothing insightful to suggest he'd actually watched a second of us play this year to be honest. Just soundbites that you'd expect from the usual lot.

If you quoted what he actually said and stuck Merson's name above it you'd probably be moaning about it.

I’m not saying he is in anyway insightful, let’s be honest bar a very few none of the pundits are. Only that he seemed pretty positive if anything, even if it involved regurgitating some stereotypes of Watford.

The Brazil backtracking was funny though. Now there is someone who truly does not have a clue. It’s the Friday edition of the Coral “daily download” and the first words out of his gob were that it was Newmarket today and tomorrow. Racing is pretty much all he’s interested in. Quite amusing that the Coral guy had to guide him back to the small matter of Arsenal v Liverpool and the rest of the footie which makes up most of the listeners main interest.

Southampton away tickets have been opened for away group D... How tinpot are we if we can't sellout a relatively close away game during our best ever start to a top flight season... Things like that make me think we deserve to get relegated.

So punish those fans who do go to the away games by being relegated? Astonishing. Turning it around, then simply because a club sells out its away tickets in the Championship, it deserves to be promoted?

  8. I generally like Brazil's show. Only started really listening to TS since I moved and the drive is longer, but it's usually good and informative chat and the bookie section is always interesting, the guys from Coral are good.

On the subject of TS however, Durham and Gough wind the hell out of me. Even though I know most of their chatter is designed as clickbait to wind people up and generate debate, some of the ***** they both come out with (especially Gough) makes me shout at the radio!

No, they all deserve better, agreed. However, we have so many plastic fans nowadays that it's beginning to show in both home and away game attendances. Fair enough if this was happening during the Walter reign, but it's happening during a period where we are playing fantastic football and are getting great results. As soon as we hit a turbulent run of form with crappy results, God knows what the attendances will be like - I wouldn't imagine they'd be something to be proud of.

That's not what I am trying to say. Not expecting everyone to go to any away games at all. What i'm saying is that our fanbase is so tinpot that there is barely, if at all any demand for even the relatively easy games to get to - even during a rather successful start to the season. Surely something is wrong when we can't fill out those games.

There are fanbases in league 1 that would happily fill out those types of games - even during a **** run of form.

I'm not having a dig at anyone personally, just the club as a whole for not really doing anything to make games more appealing for travelling fans.

Does not help, that the official site is still warning that the rail strike is still on. Some must just take it forgranted that that information is correct.
Most unhelpful by the club in my opinion.

Goodness me - just seen this stat on the BBC website:

The Magpies could become the first side to lose their opening six home games in a top-flight season - the last side to do so in any division were Watford, in the second tier in 1990-91.

Good job the forum wasn't around then - would have been total meltdown!

  18. I think firstly our catchment area is a lot smaller than some of these league 1 teams so you have less people actually supporting the team (hence why they may also have higher home attendances).

Secondly may be that as a more family based club there are more people who take children and so a simple away game becomes a. Expensive and b. A mission to get the whole clan to go. And if they already all go to home games then some people just need a rest or have commitments.

You can't blame fans at all as it is their choice.

Perhaps, I wonder, if there could be more done by the club to encourage more away attendance such as more subsedised games, better communication, better travel options etc.

In 90-91 it took until December 8 for us to win a home game. We drew 3 and lost 6 League games, 1 League Cup game and 1 Full Members Cup game before finally overcoming the mighty Plymouth Argyle. We did however win twice on the road (at Blackburn and Charlton) before almost miraculously winning 7 and drawing 2 of our last 11 games to stay up by 1 point......A truly dreadful season.

I think we actually have a large catchment area, particularly in terms of density of population. What we also have is significant competition from other clubs nearby, especially in London. Top of the list is Arsenal who have huge support in leafy Hertfordshire because communications to their stadium are good. I’ve thought for a long time Watford should make more of a marketing effort to attract people away from rival teams. In the end it will probably mean dropping prices.

  21. Sorry, that's kinda what I meant but maybe didn't get that across.

Well, when Arsenal were redeveloping Highbury and had a three-sided ground we benefited not at all. Admittedly, going to Watford isn't as much of a comedown as it was in those days

I've got an old VHS of that season. The second half is fantastic viewing from a Watford perspective If I remember correctly I went to Swindon away when we won 2-1 and then news of Hillsborough filtered through.
