None of the criticism of Gray is criticism of the other players who aren't stealing a living and parasitically piggybacking on the talents of others, whilst sucking out their effectiveness by being utter *****.

The rest of our players are awesome for carrying that bucket of droppings every game

Was he cupping his ears to the Watford fans? If so, then he can just do one. That's out of order.

Newcastle fans hate Gray because he reminds them of when they put their replica shirts through the wash on the hot setting.

If he was doing that then he won't need to augment his hearing to hear the ******** of abuse I'll be hurling at him on Tuesday. He's a ******* weeping sore of pus in this team.

I'd prefer it of we threw Kabasele or Prodl up top and let them have a crack than watch that hopeless chancer running about like a simpleton to zero effect every game.

Just going back to the point raised (which I stole) that this is our joint best start to a top flight season (apparently would be our absolute best if we had AN Other instead of Gray in the team, or even just played with ten men every game), here's what the 1982/83 Div 1 table looked after game 13:

    https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-one/06-november-1982/

It's interesting because if anything I expected us to have had more points by then - didn't we lead the table for a large part of the season? But then it was much tighter before Liverpool eventually ran away with it. Difference was we were tighter defensively (though more home than away) and scored even more goals.

Also interesting that the top flight status quo hasn't changed as much as I thought - 12 of the teams back then are in this division now, including ones that not long ago you wouldn't have expected to return, like Brighton and Swansea.

I really don't think you can say this is better than the 80's, purely on the number of negative posts we have these days, I don't remember so many back then!

I could be wrong but I seem to remember we were top for 6 days the first week of September after winning away at West Brom, the only time we have been top in the top division!

My memory may be fading, but I don’t remember us “leading it for a large part of the season”. Indeed, I’m not sure we led it at all. Can any other old gits help out?

    EDIT: just seen above post.

Clearly the goals total was helped by 8 against Sunderland.

You could well be right, was probably getting ourselves confused with Norwich who did look like title contenders for much of the season they finished 3rd before they went on to beat Bayern Munich at their place in the UEFA Cup.

Shame statto.com seems to be gone forever as that showed you the league positions following each result.

From memory we went top after about 5 games. I remember we beat Everton 2-0 at home, then thumped Southampton 4-1 away. The quote from GT after that was "we won by being prepared to lose"......that's always stuck with me. We must have been top after that, but in those days they didn't publish the league table until the third game.

Then we lost 1-0 to Man City after Joe Corrigan was taken off inured after the third minute, and full back Bobby McDonald went in goal....and we still couldn't score before Dennis Stuart scored their winner right near the end.

We then got a fortunate home win against Swansea. I remember Blissett missing a penalty, but the referee asked for it to be retaken, and he scored. After that it was a 3-0 win against West Brom and this is when we went top. That's the only time we were top in my recollection.

In fact we were third for most of the season, and only went 2nd on the final day. Watford had to beat runaway leaders Liverpool, who ironically did not win any of their final 7 games, and Man Utd had to lose at Notts County. Watford won 2-1, but United were leading 2-1 at County going into the final minute. Somehow Notts County scored 2 late goals to win 3-2.

Amazing season, and all this in permanently etched into my memory.....more than any other in my years of supporting the club.

There's a great pic here in this thread posted by Stevohorn of the exact moment Elton John hears the news of Utd's defeat and turns to celebrate with GT, knowing we've clinched 2nd: http://wfcforums.com/index.php?threads/watford-fc-history-thread.47766/page-5#post-2552892

Since 82/3 we have had some very good seasons, (runners up) 82/3, Europe and cup finalist 83/4, and some awful seasons, Bassett, Lee, Perryman, (to name but three) managers that took us backwards, also dodgy chairman, Petchy, the Russos, Graham Simpson and who can forget Bazini.

Then thank goodness a kind Italian Gentleman said to his son over dinner one day, " let's buy a football club near London "

The rest is history, our future is looking good!

Can anyone actually at the game confirm if gray aimed his celebration at Watford or Newcastle fans. I didn't think away fans sat behind the goal at that ground? Looked like Newcastle fans on the TV.

Or was it classic Gino the magician, he knew who he wanted but distracted everyone (us as fans, West Brom etc) into believing we wanted Gibbs so he could get the real man for peanuts ;)

I like Gray and I am fully behind him, however this Newcastle post did make me laugh:

I’m just grateful that Andre Gray decided to show us his best Joselu impression and miss two absolute sitters.

  26. why? it could mean anything, and might not have been to Watford fans anyway

To be fair the commentary on MOTD even said when he was one on one from the tight angle with the whole goal and shot woefully wide, that Gray’s body language and confidence was looking very low.

I am glad he did score one, but perhaps it’s a psychological problem he’s having? I cannot fault his work rate for the side and some of his ball hold up play reminds me of a young Deeney.

Excellent and excellent vs WHU too. All the concerns when we signed him were about his defensive qualities and positioning. Will be interesting to see how he copes when someone really takes him on.

Completely different team to a year ago. Literally. Only one outfield player remained in the starting 11 yesterday....Britos. 6 are new signings. 3 (Mariappa, Kabasele, and Doucoure) weren't getting in the team.

Nath, the pent up frustration is oozing out of this post. Are you still not getting any ? I think an update on your pursuit of a female partner is long overdue. How is it going ? Shouting about Gray may make yourself better temporarily but we all know it's not what you desperately need.

Newcastle for the abuse they gave him for earlier miss. He's missed a few and not looked great but he creates space and doesn't give up. Ok some really don't rate him but some of the abuse on here is OTT.

Fans often state that all they ask for is 100% from players. It must be because he’s ex *uton why some of you are so piss*d off with him.

Technically, his finishing has been poor but I’d rather have him chasing down and trying than many other more gifted players who only turn up when they feel like it.

Ighalo before he left was a lazy and ineffective piece of s*** and last week fans were treating him like a hero and wanting him back!

    Sort yourselves out
