I first heard Iris DeMent when Paul Heaton was delivering a top ten somethingorother on MTV - when music television was watchable. He picked a track from the Infamous Angel album by the name of "Our Town" and it genuinely brought a lump to my throat - so I popped out and bought the CD, (those were the days eh?).

Sadly, the rest of the album brought something else into my throat - bile. Her voice - so delicate, fragile and evocative on that particular track - drove me into an irrational rage for the rest of the album.

    I have tried.

For years, I used to slip it into the CD player and try - really hard - to like it. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to music, so being able to drag out, “I love Iris DeMent. What - you haven't heard of her?" would have appealed to my childish one-upmanship - but I just can't listen to her for longer than three minutes.

Full marks for whoever recommended it. It takes guts to admit to liking any form of folk/country and when you add such a (cough) "distinctive" voice - she's a hard sell.

Any other George Formby fans here?

Incredibly talented ukulele player and I love his music.

Also love his films too although I haven't seen them all yet. Think I've seen 9 at the minute. I challenge anyone to watch them and not have a smile on your face by the end.

This is one of my favourites, one of his last recordings:

I like some of his material Norn. Also Django Reinhardt:

Also like a bit of Ivor Novello as fine a lyricist as one could hope to find. A rather melancholic song appropriate for some with Valentines Day tomorrow. Brings moisture to the eyes.

    Somewhere there's another land
    different from this world below,
    far more mercifully planned
than the cruel place we know.
    Innocence and peace are there--
all is good that is desired.
    Faces there are always fair;
love grows never old nor tired.

We shall never find that lovely
    land of might-have-been.
I can never be your king nor
    you can be my queen.
Days may pass and years may pass
    and seas may lie between--
We shall never find that lovely
    land of might-have-been.

    Sometimes on the rarest nights
comes the vision calm and clear,
    gleaming with unearthly lights
on our path of doubt and fear.
Winds from that far land are blown, whispering with secret breath--
hope that plays a tune alone,
love that conquers pain and death.

Shall we ever find that lovely
    land of might-have-been?
Will I ever be your king or you
    at last my queen?
Days may pass and years may pass
    and seas may lie between--
Shall we ever find that lovely
    land of might-have-been?

    Reinhardt was just a phenomenon.

My guitar teacher introduced me to Bireli Lagrene who he claims is the greatest guitarist that has ever been and ever will be. He mastered all of Reinhardt's solos by the age of 12, so he is well worth checking out.

Ever since the great Gary Moore passed away nothing music wise has excited me so I have to look back in time for new discoveries as nowadays music is vacuous and soulless.

My favourite violinist Julia Fischer in a truly exceptional performance of a staple of the violin concerto repertoire with a conductor that in the space of a few years has carved out an enormous reputation as one of the worlds finest conductors. Vasily Petrenko. His Shostakovich symphony cycle with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has been one of the finest recordings of those particular works.

Out of nowhere, we're getting a new Radiohead album tonight.

Both songs so far have been great, so I'm incredibly excited. It really feels like it could be some of their best work.

I've missed talking about music here, as nobody ever likes the same thing.

Been playing the new Blink 182 record a lot since it came out. Positively refreshing from their last few releases. Happy that Matt Skiba has fallen into the line up seamlessly too.

Moose Blood, these guys can do no wrong in my eyes. Just incredible.

Interesting what you can find when you play a game and listen to the accompanying soundtrack.

If one wanted to download some music other than from iTunes, where might one go? Of course I buy all my music totally legally and would never do this, but i'm just curious...

3 or 4 years ago (can't remember) I went into my local music store and decided to pick up two random albums and give them a listen, to try and discover some new talent.
Being a lover of rap music, I had become tired and weary of the usual money , women, fast cars, auto tune mumble rap rappers, I wanted something different in this genre.

I picked up a hit and a dud in my opinion, but ingrained in me is the idea to try new things, especially in music, cause you don't know what's out there until you go and listen to it.

    I picked up:

Run the jewels' self titled album
    And an MF Doom album

Two completely different sub divisions in rap, both still relatively underground after years of trying to break through, rtj having some success in their single careers as Killer Mike and El- p ,but never any real recognition.

MF doom, any rap hipster will place them in an overly available top 10 beat rappers ever, yet his uncommercialised beats and lyrics prohibit him from renowned success, despite critical success.
    Skip 3/4 years

Here we are today and I have been able to support the growth of run the jewels , who have recently put out their 3rd album, 4th if you count meow the jewels.
I will hopping on a plane to see them in Belfast in march and cannot wait as I sit here in my run the jewels shirt.

Before that point I prefered procuring mp3's by certain means. Ever since then I choose to buy albums of the bands/groups/rappers I support and would emphasise the importance of getting a physical copy to lend to a friend, as it's still a great way of gaining traction for an artist.

Anyway, for those massively into rap and those who hate it , check out run the jewels for something entirely different.
