There isn't much "culture" there, but for a hotel based beach holiday, nice weather and warmish seas in December, it is very good. But choose your hotel/resort carefully as entertainment is usually hotel based. Can't go too far wrong with the Rui chain of hotels.

why do we do the cape bit in English and the Verde bit in Portuguese? I'm trying to think of something similar but all I can think of is ''the Seychelles" and "cote ivory"

If you're not planning on leaving the resort then why does it matter where you go that's warm?

Margate is near the equator and no anti-malarials needed. No other research needed. Just book it now as December books up very early.

    Papua New Guinea?

Papua bit at Papa Johns pizza,
New bit at New Look in Intu shopping centre and then go and buy a guinea pig from the local pet shop and watch it run around it’s wheel while you eat your pizza contemplating the futility of life .

English speakers register capo as cape but don’t register verde as anything other than verde.
I have regularly seen the place name as Capo Verde in the US, but that’s probably because Americans don’t know what a cape is

I went on my first all inclusive holiday last year to cape Verde

It is basically just a big, ugly, empty place, with a beach.

Most of it is just half completed, derelict condo shells

It was a boring holiday of sitting around at the hotel pool drinking beer and eating pizza.

I don't know if all inclusive holidays are just like this, but I found it very dull indeed

  19. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

No they aren't all like that. But some people want a "boring" holiday. Read a good book or two, swim a little, go for a jog, dose off in the sunshine for an hour or two, have a drink and a nibble. Get up when I feel like it and go to bed when I feel tired.

I'd give my right arm to be able to do that right now. I'm knackered.

Why not try fuerteventura, it’s just up the road from Cape Verde? Plenty to do there, beaches are amazing.

  22. Oddly enough, me and the missus were discussing an end of Nov holiday last night and Cape Verde came up. Seems pretty decent price (not middle classes as far as I can see as under £700pp) and should still be in the late 20s around 25th Nov.

Doubt we'd leave the resort too much as just after some winter sun sitting round the pool with beer and pizza , not culture and experiences as going to Thailand for 2 weeks for all that in March (so @PotGuy - your description therefore sounds perfect!)

Will try thy the Rui resort as @zztop suggests as that came up as a decent and fair priced option.

@Vicarage Road - looked at fuerteventura too but the temperatures there seem to drop dramatically to the lower 20s around the same time.

Agreed @PotGuy description is exactly what I’m looking for , 7 days next to a pool listening to music , reading a book and ignoring my wife and kids

Have tried all of the canaries , they aren’t that hot in December and you can end up in some really dodgy resort that looks ok until you get there

  24. We spontaneously booked ours earlier while in the shopping centre up here.

Need to find a decent book to take now.

This ^ I've stayed at the Rui Karamboa, Funana and Touareg.

Cape Verde is pretty sparse in terms of things to see and do, so make sure you go to a hotel which looks like it has enough to keep you occupied. I think of the hotels I've stayed in, the Funana was the least isolated. There's a walkable route into the nearby town of Santa Maria which has a few restaurants and shops. The others are pretty much miles from anywhere.

The climate and people are all spot on.

  28. Over 6 hour flight but not considered long enough for long haul so no TV in the chair or aisle.

What can I do for 6 hours? I don't usually sleep on planes and I can't play candy crush for 6 hours.

    Need some good books.

Saw a certain Mr Brimson has a book out called 'Wings Of A Sparrow' getting good reviews.

May buy some Star Trek books - always wanted to read the DS9 series follow ups to find out what happened after the last TV episode.

There's also an Angel follow on comic book series that continues after the final battle scene (Can you tell I'm a geek?).

    Maybe a couple of autobiographies.

I'm not gonna lie, that looks like my definition of utter hell. A whole bunch of sun loungers round a pool in the sun. I'd rather be walking through a forest in the rain in Merthyr Tydfil.
Lucky we're not all the same isn't it ?!

  34. Each to their own. But a week doing next to fark all sitting round a pool drinking all inclusive alcohol isn't the worst place to be right now, especially in December away from my current job.

We are doing a couple of island excursions, one of which is a night time desert trip to see the stars in a virtually zero light pollution environment which I'm really looking forward to.

Plus l'll be spending 2 weeks touring Thailand in March, so I think I can let myself just about tolerate this one for now.
