Nice of the BBC to headline news coverage with a failed actress and someone born into privilege. Forget the coup in Myanmar, crisis in Yemen, idiots in Texas and the EU creating more jobs for failed politicians. No lets focus on becoming Hello/OK! .

I didn't give a **** about any of this for ages, but now they have beaten me with it, relentlessly for so long that I'm just sick of hearing about it.

I assume that somewhere, in a world outside my circle, the performance of royal duties means something, but as I don't have a hospital ward to open, or a military parade which needs saluting or a charity which needs a patron, it makes no difference to me how many of them are available for such tasks.

However, seeing the woman on TV in clips, promoting a tell all interview with Oprah, after their ongoing, relentless courting of publicity about how they just want to be left alone, and seeing her shocked as she denies claims from dozens of staff about being a bully and a bitch, i just want it to end.

I have no time for the Royal family in general, but these two seem to have morphed into a reality TV couple. 'We've quit royal dutied to focus on Dancing on ice, I'm a celebrity and our forthoming ITV 3 fly on the wall show."

    Just stop it will you!

I would love for media in general to stop promoting celebrities. Vacuous non entities for the most part. The more coverage the media gives them the more entrenched it becomes. Don't make stupid people famous please. I would love to have a word with the BBC editor who deemed it as being headline worthy. Sinking to the level of stupidity seen usually on American news channels and their never ending love affair of deeming coverage of idiots more important than real news.

Completely agree. At any time of day, you can flick through the channels on our Freesat box and find 10 or so shows which revolve around either following round thick, clueless, idiots and their associates, or watching them act woodenly. They say nothing, they know nothing, the entertainment is nil and it seems to revel in promoting their lack of knowledge, education or awareness of the world around them. Makes me sick.

I actually quite like the idea we have a royal family, and i am sure the money we get from tourism offsets the costs. That said Meghan playing the victim and then disappearing back to their £8m mansion is typical of them. They are nothing without the royal family, yet they rejected them for money and a life in glamour. I don’t like the press, but they want to control stories about them, so that they are only positive stories. They don’t accept when you put yourself out there and tell others how to live their lives, you may get people that disagree.

I agree with you, but I actually find it quite easy to avoid all this stuff from the Royals downwards (or upwards, maybe).

Worthy of a thread in itself. The first Big Brother would seem tame stuff now. We’ve cut to the chase and reduced reality TV to will they fight and bonk? There is even a show to rate people on the shape of their genitals. The idea that ‘Made in Chelsea’ would do anything but inspire violent revolution against the parasites involved astounds me.

Thing is though, human character and relationships are a never ending source of interest, especially to the young. And some reality TV is, however mindlessly, democratic, giving a platform to a range of views, lifestyles and social classes.

So celebrity is here to stay. Shame you can’t say the same about reading.

The whole thing is a manufactured controversy. Despite his privileged upbringing, it's no wonder Harry has a deep loathing for the media after having to grieve for his mother in such a public way. And Meghan is clearly happy to sue and, it should be pointed out, win a substantial privacy court case against the Daily Mail group.

I just think it's a classic example of picking the right fight at the wrong time. As long as Queenie and Phil are around the monarchy's grip on sentiment from the soppy majority isn't going to change. Who knows, in 10 years time in the same boat he could have been seen as a hero amongst the same saps as he struck out away from the crusty old image of duty being the things @wfcmoog highlighted.

He's farked now though. He can't get past the drivel about upsetting granny or hastening Phil's demise.

I did just this only the other way and came across one that really boiled my piss. A spin off show from TOWIE about one of the woman from it who has had a baby. The show is just about that, her knocking about at home with her kid and thick as pig **** husband. They’ve got absolutely nothing of interest to say, because they’re hideously vacuous people, yet people actually decided that was worth making a TV show out of, and worst of all, people watch it.

What possible entertainment value can people gain from watching someone with maybe a little bit more money than them, but just pretty much doing and saying the same things as they do and say in their own lives? It’s the equivalent of a chimp looking at themselves in the mirror for 30 minutes.

People like to be reassured they are not the ones at the bottom of the social hierarchy. So if they are shown others who are like them, or better still more stupid than them, they will lap it up.

I've always been fairly neutral about the Royal family, at least it avoids the need for the rigmarole of having to elect yet another self-loving politician to be president every 4 or 5 years, plus the Queen has pretty much done her role with the utmost of dignity. In the case of Meghan, she is someone who had been an actress and a big head thinking it's OK to treat Joe public with a false sense of hierarchy; she strolls into the royal fold thinking it will bend and bow to her demands, but she was horrified that she couldn't.

In some ways I feel people who go out of their way to criticise characters they see on the TV for their lack of intelligence, class, culture, etc etc etc are in a way, displaying their own inferiority complex. 'Aren't they awful' is really just another way of seeking reassurance that 'I'm not like that .... am I?'

It's astonishing that hordes of people across social media are peddling all sorts of hateful opinion about them. It's as if they are all the couple's closest friends with the 'insights' they have to her character and motives. I don't particularly care for the royals either way, but I'm amazed so many are joining the latest media witch-hunt to spew out their two-pennorth of bile. They don't actually realise they've fallen hook, line and sinker for the 'build 'em up then knock 'em down' M.O of the frenzied tabloid media and believe every word of the biased, lying, sensationalised, character-assassinating rubbish they read.

When we were kids, we maybe dreamed if being a footballer, a singer or an actor. Fame may have been an inevitable byproduct of the success we dreamt of, but it was not the main deal.

Now it's just a career to be famous. Go on Love Island, get 100k instagram followers and start pushing cosmetics and designer items on young idiots.

I presume it works. I presume that across the country, there are millennials and gen Z people working minimum wage jobs, buying Luiz Vitton trainers for 2 months' salary because some heavily made up girl who's never been seen without a heavy filter applies to hide her mediocrity, told them so on TikTok.

I just don't get it Smudge.

Me neither Moog. I don't think we are stupid. It is the superficial and shallow achieving preeminence. The idea that who you are is not your internal character but what you display externally in terms of the wealth via brands you show others. It is quite distasteful to my mind and fuelled by media in all it's forms. It works because there is a herd mentality even in what is supposed to be a defining character trait of being British of eccentricity. Although you have eccentrics all around the world. Why people cannot just be themselves escapes me.

I despise advertising and influencing. Who says this seasons fashion is such and such and what colours people should wear ? Right now you see phone companies pushing the Samsung S21 when most people will barely use a fraction of it's capability but use it merely as a statement of being up with the current trend and disposing of what are perfectly serviceable phones.

I avoid youtube comment pages like the plague having made the mistake in previous years of reading the incredible amount of trolling, bile, and ill informed opinion on there. Some of the channels dedicated to history or art for instance are quite civilized in terms of discussion. But for the rest it's like contracting a disease that makes you feel dirty. I love some of the hyperbole on there as well at times. Declarative statements based on very little information or awareness. John Williams is the Beethoven or Mozart of music today or the greatest film composer ever or sometimes Hans Zimmer gets the vote.

So many things wrong with that I could pick out and JW would also agree no doubt that he is not. Anyone daring to contradict or provide information to the contrary is pilloried. The herd instinct is pretty strong.

One other is the way some gush about catwalk models. Is there some unique skill in walking down the catwalk hands on a hip and twirling around ? It seems one of the most vacuous of professions and industries where in a quite sleazy industry individuals rocket to prominence based on the whims of an editor, agent or pure chance.

I am neither pro Royal Family nor anti-Royal family. I've always sort of looked at them as a tourist attraction. Not one that I'm personally terribly interested in, but they're by no means the only ones in that category. Of course, they are "celebrities". They have a brand and are surrounded by marketing people (regardless of their posh titles) and administrators. These peoples' jobs are basically to market the Royal Family. They call themselves things like "Buckingham Palace", but they're a marketing firm. They, like most professionals are serious about what they do but also almost certainly bring their own personal likes, dislikes and biases into the job, along with their experience and that of centuries worth of their predecessors. Most of them are by nature very conservative. I don't mean their politics (although that is almost certainly true also), but rather in how they execute their jobs. Run the formula that has worked before. Protect the brand, don't change the plan because one of the captive celebrities is a nutter, a w**ker, a tart or even a pedophile. Say as little as possible, stiff upper lip, let the press have a go - because, after all, it's free marketing (there's no such thing as bad publicity) and the press has you outnumbered anyway. Not to mention they always get the last word because they control the mediums of communication. Plus, there have always been family members who were nutters, tarts, etc., and for at least a couple of centuries now we can't behead them on Tower Hill.

Along comes Harry. Whatever on feels about his parents, he most certainly cared for his Mum and was deeply affected by her death. Much of which he lays at the feet of the press horde and the lack of defence she received (rightly or wrongly) from the Marketing Dept.. Harry is trained up so that he has basically three jobs that he's qualified for: 1) Celebrity tourist attraction b) Heir to the throne and c) Army officer. Fair play to him, he preferred the latter and actually seemed decent enough at it, but eventually had to give it up because he was putting the blokes around him in danger. Whether he could have come home and driven a desk in some staff position, I don't know. The last one to really do that was Mountbatten 60 odd years I think. Regardless, that career ends and he's now also far down the heir to the throne pecking order, so he's left with Job 1. The he meets and falls in love with another celebrity, who also at least to some degree has lived in the real world most of her life. She's also had to deal with at least some celebrity media - without a legion of marketing people micromanaging her messages and telling her what she can and (mostly) can't say. She plays along for a bit but eventually has had enough. She probably (among other things) tells some of these handlers who are trying to teach her the Royal Family Marketing way (sit there, take it, don't do that, don't say that, be quiet and pretty, etc.) to **** right off. Now whether she should known this going in or not, we can all have our opinions. But TBF, most of us have taken on at least one job where once we were in the door we realised "The people are *******, they're out for themselves - not the team, much less me and I really ***ed up". Problem is, her job also includes a marriage. She gripes to Harry. His response is basically "You're right, they are a bunch of weaselly w**kers - and this routine got my Mum killed". He runs his complaints up the flag pole, but everyone else ahs been programmed/beaten into submission so they say... "Sorry, which part of this is news to you?" and "We're not changing the rules for you Mr 5th-in-line, there's plenty of royals around, so get back in your place". Just a minor point that most here likely know, one of the best ways to send any American through the ceiling is to even imply that they need to get back in their place. They have violent aversion to anyone saying or acting like they are better than them, especially if it's because of wealth, lineage, etc.. An American woman who identifies as black will typically have a thermonuclear response to this sort of thing. Side note: If any of these Palace workers who were allegedly bullied went down this road... it likely wasn't pretty.

That aside, Harry has a think about it and says... "Right. I'm now 5th in line to the throne - about what Andy was when he was *****ing 17 year old girls in the Virgin Islands (ironic that)". "They're not going to help me, just like they didn't help my Mum, because quite honestly, they didn't like her much more than they like Meghan. In fact, as Diana was at least minor nobility and a British subject, they likely liked her more - and see how that turned out". "**** this, we've got our career - celebrity - and unfortunately, there's no shortage of Royals, so we're going to have to take orders from these stodgy marketing people for the rest of our lives and we may still end up like my Mum". "And/or, Wifey will kill 2-3 of them with her bare hands". "Well, I probably should never have given up that job driving tanks in Iraqistan. At least there I could shoot some of the *****". Well, Wifey here knows how to make money as a celerity and I know a bit about it as well. We should go do this somewhere where the weather is better at least - and even if there are far less people who want to come by our zoo and throw peanuts to us, there'll be far less of the ones who protest our mere existence too". "No matter what happens, they have to at least like us more than 'ol Andy - and he still gets to keep his toys and come round for dinner".

Meanwhile, there is a collective "How dare they!?!?!?!" Some from the actual Royal family, but likely mostly from the Marketing ****s who think themselves Royal by association and or course by some of the public living vicariously through the Royals. Secretly, I suspect several Royals (think Margaret, the Tindalls and a few others - maybe even Prince Chuckles himself) are saying "Good on you, I wish I'd sorted out how to do that", but they need to stay employed, so the keep quiet. So.. Harry and Meghan start to make money as celebs.. once again annoying the shiite out of the jilted Marketing department, the jilted British media and probably to some extent, the Queen herself. Although I suspect at this point the Queen mostly wants what every parent and grandparent wants - quiet. That's probably what annoys her most - that she has to hear about it... but she's lived through the blitz and decades of tosspot relatives, I doubt that she lets it bother her for long. So, the media and the Marketing department gin up as much controversy as possible because... it's how they all get paid and, for some of them... their widdew feewings w-w-urr h-h-hurt because Harry and Meghan think they're ****ers and aren't shy about saying it.

I expect this to rinse and repeat. It's what celebrities do. It's what marketing people and bureaucrats do. It's what the media do. The only real loss is that if the Marketing people had been a little smarter and less set in their ways, they could have kept them in England and sold a few more tickets to the zoo. Still, everybody wins at least a little.
