Who was the Italian bloke when we were in the championship who did the little overhead flick then volley onto the crossbar? Whoever he was I'd put him in this category.

I went to see Benifica vs Sporting when Pierre Van Hooijdonk played for them. It was a pretty crazy experience with lots of trouble in the away Sporting end with charges and counters charges that spread like waves across the terrace. I didn't really know what was going on. Fortunately I was in a fairly safe area by chance and the Benfica fans took to us.

seriously worrying how delighted Sporting fans are with this deal. They sing Marco Silva's name in the streets tonight because he has removed their worst LB in years from the club...

Would Silva recommend him if he didn't think he was good enough? He tried to sign him for Hull.

Smacks of us missing out on our 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc choice LB target, us getting to deadline day, and then going into panic mode and signing this guy.

    Hope I'm proven wrong.

Marco Silva didnt get to coach Zeegelaar, he arrived the year after he left. He was quite decent for Rio Ave(mid table team, fights for euro spots) before joining Sporting.
Like i said earlier, while he was completely unfit for Sporting, he might be a decent signing for you guys. The portuguese titles contenders constantly face low block defense, with barely any space to play. Players with mediocre technical abilities for the most part arent good enough for us, due to the quick decision/excution you need to have vs low block teams.
The PL has alot of open field type of games, where fast physical players thrive on, exactly what Zeegelaar is. So its not completely hopeless.

I can tell you that he is a sound professional, he never whined about getting benched and even this season, where he wasnt even allowed to train with the main squad(even when we only had 1 left back in the team) he never bitched about it, atleast to the media.

And to the guy that is consistently mentioning Benfica for no reason, why would having a rival cloud our judgement of a player? You are the one who is salty here. If anything, im quite happy.

Don't think the recruitment team could've done much more. Gibbs was clearly the priority, they waited until the end of the window when Arsenal dropped their ridiculous price, got a good fee agreed but weren't prepared to meet his ridiculous wage demands which left them with little time. Zeegelaar mentioned in an interview that he was already in the UK yesterday to start talks so he was always the back up. He's a cheap, low risk option - if he can't force Holebas out of the team, he'll probably only play 3-4 times this season. He just has to be slightly more competent than a slow centre back covering at left back and we've improved our squad.

Don't understand the abuse you're getting giving your honest view. Personally I hope he has the right characteristics for us and will give him a chance. Unfortunately WFC like most teams moving up the divisions pick up some arrogant fans. Just because we have a great manager and the best squad for many years does not make us bigger/ better than Sporting...at least not yet!

The problem is that we could have done with a new first choice left back, not second, so if this guy isn't even as good as Holebas then it's a shame we were unable to sign someone of a higher class because it's a real weak area in our team.

Small interview they keep showing on SSN and he seems cheerful and relaxed and a generally nice guy.

This guy is going to be a beast.
Sporting will watch his performances and say "he never played like that for us, can't believe we only sold him for €3mil."

We will be selling him to Chelsea for £25mil in 2 years.

In all seriousness though, I get what the Sporting fans are saying about him. In a tinpot league where the 3 best teams in Portuguese league would finish between 9th-17th in the Prem, it's hard for quality players like Zeegelaar to showcase his ability. Instead he is playing against teams that are the equivalent of Port Vale and parking the bus. In the best league in the world, the Prem, Zeegelaar will be playing against real professional football players and not some part time candlestick makers like in the Portuguese league.

Let's be honest, if Watford were in the Portuguese league, we would be champions every year just like Celtic in the Scottish league.

So I can understand why a player like Zeegelaar would frustrate them but it's not his fault he was the best LB in the league and went unnoticed due to the league being crap.

The good thing is that both clubs win. We get the best LB out of the Portuguese league, they get €3mil, which is a lot of money for a small club like Sporting. At least they can keep the floodlights running for another season with that fee. Fair play to them.

I guess stating that we are better than Sporting and Benfica and that he is regarded as the best LB in the league despite what their supporters are posting is called "putting a positive spin on things" ?

Been the odd troll on here, most recently claiming to be from another Portuguese club following a transfer, hence the reactions you have been getting. If you are genuine then welcome aboard and thanks for your honesty. What is the right back like that you sold to Brighton yesterday?

  35. KelsoOrn

We have spent pushing £50m this window. Just because we are now spending £6m, £12m, £18m on induvidual players doesn't mean we always have to. We got Kiko for free.

This guy (Marvin) has been on our (or rather Marco's) radar for a bit so was an obvious plan B when we sent the greedy Gooner up the road. Marco thinks he can get something extra out of him and that's good enough for me. Gino adreed and delivered this excellent (and essential) piece of final day business. Well done.

The views of Sporting Lisbon fans may be valid but hardly particularly relevant in the context of a player going to a club coached by a bloke who's coached him before. Let's see what the excellent head coach that is Marco Silva can bring out of him.

    Same with Molla.
