Silva is a cheque book manager so he’ll do well at Everton. As soon as the injuries kicked in he was out of his depth, our defence isn’t great but Gracia has managed to get a lot more out of them than Silva could.

    Saved me having to post.

He was out of his depth the second Rich forgot how to play football.

Will he get control over transfers though? Looks like Steve Walsh was in charge of most of Everton's recruitment, and he made a balls-up of it. I do think that job is a bit of a poisoned chalice, they have a lot of work to do, and a bunch of fans who will demand results

I don’t miss Silva at all after the horrible way he treated us, but I do miss having a Head Coach under who we used to occasionally score goals on the road.

We’ve traded him in for one with multiple sackings and relegations on his CV, a poor career win percentage, and seemingly no idea how to play the sort of exciting, attacking football that pleases the fans.

Like Silva did, this will end in tears too I fear.

I hope not. Mainly for the fact that at least when the Silva saga ended in tears, we were 10th. If Gracia goes the same way, it will likely be because we are in trouble after 8-10 games. A much worse place to be.

Worth pointing out we scored 2 in 5 away games at the end of Silva's reign

Everton will love him, he'll do well for a bit and then try and leave to bigger and better things. Their fans will kick up a stink and won't understand the irony of it at all.

Yes the end of Silva’s reign wasn’t good either.

It’s funny sometimes how the starts of seasons can be so false for teams. Like Brom winning both their opening matches, then embarking on a terrible run. And for us it seems we used up nearly all our good away performances early on, scoring 2 goals in all our opening away matches only to then not get a win on the road after November. Equally so but the other way round it happened too to Palace, no goals or points for the opening seven matches but then great form after.

Exactly, you can't rely on goals from midfield forever. Gracia had a harder away programme as well, he had 4 of the top 6 away despite having less than half a season, of course we were going to bang some away goals in the Silva days

Yes that’s true. None of our inability to score in eight successive away matches can be blamed on the Head Coach. He’s inherited tough circumstances, injuries, loss of form etc.

And the start of a new manager's reign... Start unbelievably well, then after the tactics sink in...

I'm 100% with you on this Malts. It's a Pellegrino waiting to happen.

And what does it say about him as a manager that we won 3 of his 12 home games (Gracia has won 4 of his 7, plus 2 draws), including losing 6-0 to City, losing against Stoke (they only won 2 away games all season), losing 4-1 to Huddersfield and losing against Swansea (they also won 2 away games all season)?

To do a Malts, we scored a minimum of 2 goals in each of our first 7 away EPL games this season.

    A goal tsunami.

Like the selective memories that don’t want to focus on an away record that was the worst in Europe in 2018, and instead talk about injuries (which Silva had) and poor defenders (which Silva had?

It’s galls us all, because he turned out to be such an egocentric **** - but when all things are equal, Silva got a better tune out of this team when he was focussed than Gracia has.

According to those cheeky scousers, they'll be signing Doucoure, Richarlison and Pereyra once they have the snakey one. You know - just like how they poached Silva when they originally wanted him.........

The arrogance and ignorance is quite astounding - I guess both parties will be suited to one another:rolleyes:

Despite having zero knowledge of what will really happen regarding ins and outs at the Vic this summer - I will confidently predict that Gino will not entertain any offers at all from that mob (even if it was for the players we're desperate to get rid of!)

Maybe Silva is just a "new bounce" manager? Good starts with Hull and us then fell away when the going got tough. He got Hull into a position where it was in their hands to stay up and then drew 0-0 with Southampton, lost 2-0 at home to Sunderland, 4-0 to Palace and 7-1 to Spurs in their last four games.

Even his good start with us was somewhat fortuitous - 90th minute offside equaliser against Liverpool, 90th minute winner against Swansea where we were outplayed second half after they changed formation, 89th minute offside winner against Arsenal.

Ok, maybe fortune favours the brave and he deserved the breaks as he was prepared to set us up in an attacking way, but once fortune deserted him, his points record and football was worse than Gracia's has been.

Saw his Premier League record posted earlier:

    P 42
    W 13
    D 8
    L 21
    F 42
    A 84

That's a manager that can't set his team up to defend...

  23. Steve Leo Beleck

Not the same team though was it? The squad that was available to Silva when we started the season so well hasn't been available to Gracia so how is it a fair comparison? A fairer one is when they both had injury problems, when Silva performed worse.

That's not to say that Gracia will ever get us playing like we did at the start of the season, just that it's an unfair comparison to make. It was almost unanimous that the midfield trio of Doucouré, Chalobah and Cleverley was the main reason for our early season success. Only one of those three has been available to Gracia.

  24. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I don’t think it’s wholly unfair, but I also see your point. Gracia has had access to Deleufeu and Cathcart for instance. I think there’s truth on both sides of the coin.

  25. Steve Leo Beleck

    Steve Leo Beleck Squad Player

He's had Deulofeu and Cathcart available to start for 5 out of his 14 games, so just over a third. Silva had a better squad to choose from when he had us playing well. Gracia may never be able to get us playing like that, but he hasn't been given the chance with a fit squad. When they both had a weakened squad, he did better. So maybe he deserves a shot?

  26. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Okay, so by the same token, Silva only had Chalobah for 5 games? Works both ways. Of course Gracia deserves/deserved a shot - the debate lies in whether some fans think he’s had that shot already or not. I do, you don’t. I’m sure we can both live with that whilst still occasionally airing our views on various threads.

  27. Steve Leo Beleck

And our great start was only 8 games long, so he had Chalobah for over 60% of those games. After that we won 3 out of 16 games, taking only 11 points.

Heard from a reliable source that the week before he was sacked, he didn't turn up to training all week and has his club phone switched off so no one could get hold of him.

Gracia spent weeks undoing the defensive mess Silva installed. The cracks were there when Silva was winning and in hindsight - whilst refreshing to have a positive frame of mind - we were building a glass house.

  30. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

He did not spend weeks doing anything of the sort because we’ve been terrible at the back all season. We were terrible at the back last season. It happened before Silva, during Silva and after Silva. It was just heightened more under Silva because he had us attacking more too.

Or, he realised that he couldn't get anything out of a team with ten injuries and wanted to **** off before it made him look bad

We were good for seven games, and shocking for three months.

    God I hate that snake

Fair enough but it means Silva's fix for our defence was to attack more. It didnt work at Everton, Chelsea or West Brom away for example and when our forwards are not doing the goals thing, it would have been suicide not to shut up shop defence wise. We are still making errors at the back but they're individual errors more than team errors.
