This particular question is why all this talk just frustrates me. What is their motive to get her abducted?

Whilst I wouldn't criticise the parents for what they did, criticising their judgement on leaving the kids in the apartment, is absolutely reasonable and fair. But to suspect or accuse them of being involved in her disappearance, in my view, is just bizarre.

No way are the parents involved. They just have an unfortunate air about them that makes them seem cold and unaffected. Possibly the medical career enables them to disconnect from it and keep it together. They were stupid and naive to have left the children unguarded and I bet that guilt will always be with them.

The only way they could possibly have been involved was if there had been a terrible accident that had been their fault in some way and they had then removed the body. I just don't see it esp given their constant push to keep the police investigations going. To suggest they were complicit in someone else taking her is ridiculous.

Not if it was an unsolved murder, or at least an unknown crime scene for a murder.

Also that just doesn’t fit with the timeline and their friends account of what happened, and as has been stated there is no way in hell any of their friends would cover up for them let alone all of them.

Good grief. Do people seriously believe that the McCanns are in some way behind the disappearance of their daughter?

It can and does happen. I can't remember the name of the person but a few years back a mum organised the kidnap of their child in the UK for financial gain.
The longer it goes on I have to admit I don't believe they had anything to do with it but I don't believe this has ever been ruled out

Off the top of my head on that case she was just hiding in their home, so wasn’t actually put at any risk which is entirely different.

Shannon Mathews Mum and ex Bf organised it for sympathy donations. They found shannon and she's in Foster Care or was. Mum was sentenced as was ex Bf Happened near Yorkshire

Found in her ex boyfriends house safe and well thankfully. My point was that parents can be involved

Yes they can be involved, but in that instance the child was never in any danger, which is completely different to some of the allegations being levelled at the Maccans.

The McCanns are unlikely to have been so desperate for money as to go to all that trouble. And from the photos the mum aged very quickly after the disappearance
    These accusations can't have helped.

Assuming they are 100% innocent, imagine losing your daughter to abduction AND being accused of her murder. How the hell does anyone deal with that ?

It is true the child was found in the base of a bed and was ok but what if something had gone wrong or the police hadn't found her for as quickly as they did. The fact is the parent organised the kidnap of her own child which beggars belief.
It does appear that a few years ago all suspects at the time were cleared of any involvement which I presume means the parents as well.
It's a horrible case that I wouldn't wish on anybody and hopefully it may be at an end but with possibly a very sad ending

People can even suspect them if they feel the evidence points that way, but they shouldn’t be proclaiming this as if they know it. The presumption of innocence protects us all and it is not wasted on anyone even if subsequently we find out something else.

But to me, they are parents suffering the most enormous loss and I feel we should be sympathetic.

Fair play to the world’s media who, if my casual looking for afar is anything to go by, appear to pinned every child murder on this German chap in the last week. At this rate he’ll be challenging Shipman in the serial killer stakes.

Sadly I feel a number of the critical comments of the McCanns on this thread say far more about the people writing the comments than they do about the family.

I too made a huge mistake as a parent 6 years ago.

With my newly born son home we had a visit from one of the Community Nurses. Nothing unusual in that. Other than she saw me holding my son tight in both arms as I struggled to hook my foot around a door to get through it. At that moment she introduced us to what she called "the rugby ball hold" which means holding the baby's head in one hand and the rest the body along the forearm tight to our body. Never would I have thought to hold my elder daughter that way when she was a baby and I clearly remember at the time thinking back 30 years to school and our rugby teacher at Watford Boys insisting we never hold the ball in one arm as we are more likely to drop it.

You can probably see where this post is leading.

A week later, at just two weeks old, I held my son in one arm to open the door handle to get through the same door and he kicked against my stomach at exactly the same time. He fell to the floor from a height of 1.2metres.

After silence, he burst into tears. But after trying to feed him to calm him and after calling the GP surgery first (both odd actions in hindsight when you know the full story) we drove him to the local A&E as something did not feel right.

My son "died" in A&E that day.

He was saved by the skill of the team and intubated/stabilised. What followed was an awful week starting with a scan revealing a skull fracture and ending with him transferred under blue lights with a full medical resus team for a week in an intubated coma in the PICU at Kings College Hospital in London.

I was questioned by the three different medical teams. I was questioned by social services. I was questioned by the police. Each and every one going over point by point of what was continually referred to as my "story of the events". I was shattered after no sleep night after night, I had a hostile reception from the medical staff at the first A&E, I had to take the police to my home, I was petrified about the emotional consequences on my wife as we had already lost the twin sister of our daughter during pregnancy, I feared social services would take our daughter away, I had to give a full statement under caution at Reigate police station. I had to get cover to look after our 3 year old. Never once was I concerned about me or how I acted; I just told the truth in as much detail as I could as that was what the medical staff needed to base their treatment on and that is what the police needed to make their assessment of the situation.

My actions in the way I held my son was scrutinised and re-scrutinised and re-scrutinised again. Our decision to call the GP and not 999 likewise. Our decision to drive to A&E (faster than getting an ambulance - we were there in ten mins) was questioned. The decision of which A&E to go to as well.

My demeanour (I was straight, analytical and trying to relay facts only) was 'odd' for a distraught parent apparently. I can live with that - I did what I had to do for the best of my son and my family.

Thankfully we knew exactly what had happened to my son, we knew exactly what I had done "wrong" and we did not have the press of the world in our face every minute of the day.

Six years on: my son has been a right pain in the @@@@ during lockdown. Just a normal 6 year old boy.

Please never hold a baby in one arm. And please give this family some empathy as the mistakes they made that night will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

These things happen unfortunately. My son who had incredible body strength some how managed to lever himself over his cot crashing to the floor. This happened more than once. The stupid baby bouncer you connect to the door frame came crashing down to the floor during one of his mental bouncing sessions. He even managed to fall out of a baby swing at the park.
You took action and your quick thinking saved the day.

What a dreadful time that must have been and thank the lord your son is now fine. Every parent make mistakes but thankfully very few end in tragedy. I hope to god that there is an end to this story soon, although it's likely to be a sad one. I can't help the fact that there are things that don't sit easily with me about the parents though. Hopefully I will be proved wrong

I think there were a few reasons for the animosity, firstly because as doctors you would assume that they were above average intelligence and made a very poor error of judgement. Secondly their demeanour, most people in their position would have been frantic and incoherent in front of the cameras, police, etc., however as pointed out in this thread that as doctors they are trained to switch off from horrible things and as such appear unemotional. Thirdly, that they got a pretty professional media machine running for them that others without their wit may not have been able to bring to the forefront, it would be interesting to know how the money raised was spent because I know that the taxpayer footed the bill in the tune of millions for far longer than any other missing person case I can think of.
