Only tried to go to the kennel once. I was 18 and had passed my driving test 2 months previously. First time on the motorway, driving rain, crashed my mum's car and wrote off another. Later heard Watford lost 3-0. Fairly crap day that.

My Dad took me to my first one against lot lot in 96/97 season at their place 0-0 I was 9. We went into a pub Dad got talking to these old blokes didn't say of course we were Watford. One of the blokes turned around and said to me who's your favourite player I said Tommy Mooney. Think my Dad actually shat himself out of fear lol

First one I went to was away sometime in the mid eightes. Can't remember the score but they probably won as they were all on the pitch afterwards. Been to loads home and away since. I've had my fill of derby matches so not really bothered by playing them again. I know the ******s up the road are rabib with joy that they're playing us again, most likely beccause of the torrid time they've had dropping down the leagues and then coming back up whilst all the time we've been in the top 2 divisions.

My brother in law told me a story about a game he went @ their place once

He says that he and loads of mates went there in a “Hirus” van. They were stopped at some traffic lights near the town centre and loads of home fans spotted the van and rushed it.

By all accounts they started rocking it and trying to turn it over. When the lights changed they drove off up the road being chased on foot by a crowd

Apparently they stopped the van, grabbed a scummer and threw him in the back of the van before driving pff again. The story is the guys in the back gave him a good hiding and then threw him out

It’s a good story, no idea how true though

This poll is very badly worded so I haven't voted. However, I have never been to a derby before.

It really is actually a dump, you know. Calling it a kennel is flattering it. One of the three worst grounds I've ever been to: The other two? Gillingham (although it was an eon and a half ago, so I don't know now); The old Oxford ground (never been to their new place). Other dumps include Everton's and, yes, Palace's. I don't include tiny old places just for the sake of it, such as Plough Lane, Bournemouth's or Bury's - they are/were just small.

Their ground is in the worst 3 I've been to, the others are Wigan's old ground and Cambridge

I remember going to theirs', last day of the season and losing 2 - 1 (?), which meant we finished the season third (?), in the days when that third got you nothing. Bill McGarry's time?
I remember going to theirs' in the FA Cup in the Taylor/Pleat days, when both were good sides. They went 2-0 up in 20 minutes, we equalized and Callaghan hit the bar in the second half. We won the replay with a goal by Barnes in extra time. These two were amongst the most exciting games I've been to - quality football and end-to end cup stuff.
I was at the famous and justly exalted 0 - 4. The mistake I made was taking two daughters. They were little girls and one of them started crying at the behaviour of our surrounding supporters (at the Watford end). Their supporters went berserk and I think there were mounted police keeping them from their own manager.
I remember (late 70's/early80's?) standing at the back of the terraces as the animals stood on the edge of the pitch hurling half-bricks at us. The rocks and stuff had too far to travel and you could take protective action, but it would not have been a good time to be inattentive. I think the police and stewards were at home having a cup of tea, which sums up L***n.
For the youngsters who have never been and for the faint of heart - don't underestimate the unpleasantness that can happen.

Peterborough's was rank during the 12/13 season when we lost that game 3-2. Toilet floor was swimming in a couple of inches of piss, walls were chipboard and whole place so small so that people were ******* in the sinks. Crappy little terrace too and seen to remember a fight between Watford fans as some fat idiot was abusing Vydra non stop.

The only time I went to Peterborough was in 1994 when we won 4-3, that was one of the most insane games I'd ever been to

Peterborough now have seats in their away end.

Gillingham still have a permanent temporary stand.

Remember going to Palace when they nicked 2 goals in injured time under Silva to win then Potters Bar the week after.

Quite frankly there wasn't a lot of difference in the stands we were in!

Thanks for highlighting those Cup games against L*t*n in ‘84. The replay is still THE most exciting match I’ve ever been to in somewhere well over 1,500 Watford games.

I've been to all derby matches since the late 70s - even the one in the 90s when they had banned all away fans for a few seasons. I got a supporters' club membership and got tickets in the main stand. It was a boring 0-0 and the only thing I remember was counting 17 stanshions between me and the pitch. It was like watching the match through a slated fence! if you've not been in the away end before, their approach to converting terracing to seating in the 90s was interesting - they just attached seats to the terracing, every other step! Thus no leg room at all, not an issue when everyone is standing of course, but it's not easy to pass others as you shuffle along a row to your seat. Compared to visiting most modern, spacious Premiership grounds these past five years, it'll be a shock to the system going to many away games in the Championship and Luton's Kenilworth Skip is by far the worst.

It looks as though from TV highlights last season they only give half that stand to away fans now (that might change when we're there - segregation would be impossible otherwise) so if social distancing still applies when we play there next April, we might get 25 tickets if we're lucky.

Highlights have been the cup matches in the 80s, the 4-0 in '97 and the 2-1 the last time we played there. IIRC Ashley Young got sent off but we hung on fairly comfortably. Luckily I have always avoided trouble and intend to keep it that way (touch wood)!
