Yep. His attitude obviously stinks and he's clearly not that good. I just wonder whether the club will think he's depreciating even further in value over there so will give it one last roll of the dice. Either that or cancel his contract.

It's certainly looking that way. Its last chance saloon for him. Frustrating because he has talent.

That would probably mean paying him off.

Yep. Can't imagine he's on mega bucks but probably more than anyone else is going to pay him given the past few years. Contracted to us until June 2023 so I guess depends how much of a lost cause they see him as. Maybe better to see if he'd take a smaller lump sum and option to sign for someone else as free agent. Doubt CSKA were covering all his wages.

Anyway this will all be immaterial when he comes back like a new, new, new signing and fires us to promotion with his mate Isaac.

Given his age, he'd take up a roster spot. Unlikely that Giarretta would go that route. You can let U21's hang about... after that they have to earn their keep. Perhaps a loan to a desperate MLS side in the US. Someplace where when you go into a club and tell the ladies that you're a footballer for Chicago they think that you mean the Bears.

  20. This isn't on him its on us. How demotivating must it be to loaned around 3rd rate backwater leagues year after year. If we don't want him, release him. If we do want him then he needs to be with our coaching team.

Sorry but there is a fair share of blame to be laid at Penaranda's feet as to how his non-career has gone.

If Wiki is to be believed, since joining Udinese in 2015/16 he has only managed to make 71 league appearances. His highest number was in the same season for Granada where he played 23 times after showing brightly for their 'B' team in 9 games.

He then joined Watford, stayed at Granada but only played 14 times. Nothing changed other than the name of the parent club on his registration forms yet his appearances are now way down.

6 games back at Udinese on a season's loan in Serie A (not a 3rd rate division or team) bumps the number up but he only scored 1 goal in those 20 games spread over, I think, 2 seasons with both Granada & Udinese. As I say, nothing has really changed but he's already on the slide.

In 2017 he joined La Liga side Malaga. Not a 3rd rate side or 3rd rate league. They had a season's loan arranged with the option of a further season if all went well. He played 16 games and was called out by Malaga's coach for being unprofessional. The 2nd years loan option was turned down by the Spanish club.

During this time, the one real obvious screw up by Watford is not parking him somewhere to get his work permit or citizenship sorted in a single European country.

2019 now sees him on another season's loan at Eupen in Belgium. Not a top league but there are a lot worse and, let's face it, his stock is now falling due to his lack of quality in Seria A & La Liga along with a public rebuke for his shoddy attitude thrown in for good measure. With hindsight it's no real surprise clubs in top level leagues aren't rushing forward for his services.

What happens in Belgium? 5 games and another falling out with the head coach, this time complaining about training methods. He didn't see the season out.

I think it was in 2019 I saw him 'play' for the U23s a couple of times. His demeanour if not his attitude was not impressive at all. Lack lustre is an exaggeration of how he warmed up for those 2 games and he was berated by team mates for not putting a shift in during both. He was subbed off at half-time in one of those games if I remember correctly.

Now, with no obvious pathway into our 1st team (what position exactly does he play) he's sent over to CSKA Sofia who while not being in a top division, are in the Europa League and guess what, he falls out with another coach. It's okay though because he got sacked so a clean slate with the new guy. Oh look, he's subbed off in the 69th minute of a friendly after coming on at half-time.

Because Watford don't have a great record at managing the young players at the club, especially those inherited via Granada & Udinese when the Pozzo's first took us over, it doesn't mean they are solely responsible for players' lack of progress. And I don't buy or excuse any player for having a crap attitude if they go out on loan to any league, especially if they are non-European and needed to qualify for a work permit pre-Brexit. It happens for many many young players and it's expected of them to show development and improvement both as players & as in individual in lesser leagues for smaller clubs. Rightly or wrongly it's part of modern football.

Every coach I've read or listened to always places the utmost importance on a young players attitude, their willingness to learn and that inner drive to succeed. Without that inner strength and desire it doesn't matter how much talent an individual has, if he doesn't apply himself he is going to fall by the wayside.

Whatever failings Watford have afforded Penaranda, several head coaches criticising his attitude & lack of professionalism says a lot and in my opinion has a huge baring as to why he'll disappear from football without ever realising his early promise.

  22. There is a list as long as your arm of young potential that didn't just not make it but flopped, dismally, under the Pozzos. I'm not going to accept they all have / had a bad attitude, or that none were good enough. The common denominator is the club and people like Giraldi.

Although many will disagree with me but when you give a young player what for them is a huge contract unless they are managed very carefully some will take the easy option and not put the effort in, they think they have made it (unfortunately as far as their bank balance goes they have). Even when they are back home when it’s all ended they will still be hero’s with their mates as they are the ones buying the drinks and treated like a superstar!

As I said on the other Penaranda thread, I can't think of many who have been released by the club as a youngster or who has come through during the Pozzo reign - that was the criteria for the names given to @GoingDown - who has suddenly or over time made a name for themselves at a good level.

It may well be the quality has never been there for the main part.

Out of pure morbid curiosity, I Googled CSKA's last two matches. AP didn't score, but played over 85 minutes in each of them. Perhaps someone has finally gotten through to him that he needs to put the work in if he wants to keep getting paid.

Well TBF, it seemed that in both matches, the score was close and Sofia made several substitutions at the time. It's not uncommon for clubs trying to see a game out to bring on fresh defensive legs in the place of attackers as well as use substitutions to try and run the clock down. If he had been subbed while they were tied or chasing the game it would be concerning. That said, 2 points doesn't equal some sort of renaissance. It's just a minor positive point. If the light has switched on, he wouldn't be the first person to learn to stop being a **** in their early 20s. Some never figure it out.
