I do agree that he was played out of position earlier (and I did comment in the summer that he was best as a right winger and would replace Hughes there, while others on here thought he'd rather rotate with Del and Pereyra). That wouldn't have helped, for sure.

However, he still was far too nervous and sloppy for the position to have been the only reason. It taking a young, new player a few months to adjust to a new league really isn't uncommon - look at how long it has taken players like Fred at Man Utd and Fabinho at Liverpool to get up to speed and play well regularly, for instance, and they're more experienced even.

Yes of course we do. But if we fluked one hopefully the composure will follow.

    Doucoure and Troy were *****

Kaba and Hughes were brilliant. Sarr, Gerri showed flashes, Mapps and Kiko did well out of position

All in all, a promising performance, get a proper striker in between our wingers and rest Doucs for Quina and we will start to win more than we lose

Unfortunately, it'll be too little to late imo, appointment of QSF is what killed us, personally I accepted Champo football next year after the Wolves defeat

Surely this alone is evidence that we completely mismanaged the early part of his season?

It’s widely acknowledged, as you rightly point out, that the transition for a young player to a new league/club isn’t easy, so purposely playing him out of position, in a role that renders the majority of his speed/natural instinct useless, is essentially setting him up to fail.

I still maintain that our squad of defenders are good enough for mid-table as the defence can be improved so much by better organisation, and that is what has happened over the past few games.

Mid-table defenders are bound to get caught out by the world class forwards they come up against every game or so, and when we sit back so much, fail to score ourselves, our lack of real world class defenders is exposed so much more.

Our entire defence was brilliant today, against the European Champions, no less. Liverpool scored twice (the first was a real worldie, and the second resulted from a lucky total mis-hit), and they barely had any other chances at all.

    Our problem is up front.

But I've been so disappointed over the last 4 transfer windows that we have just not bought a goalscorer. Scoring goals cannot be coached or organised, it has to be natural talent - and our forwards just do not have it.

Not getting in a goalscorer must be the biggest error the Club has made. We have to just hope that we can get someone in, or Pedro steps up to the plate, or somehow, someone gets on a lucky streak like Ighalo did a few months ago.

Spot on, we got away with it before because players like Doucoure and Peyreya popped up with vital goals regularly enough. They’ve both completely stopped doing that. Meanwhile Deeney will only ever score from a penalty now, at least in his first couple of seasons he carried a mild goal threat, but no longer. Likewise Gray, if it’s possible, has got even worse as a player. Predictably The wellbeck gamble backfired horribly.

Look at Southampton, even though they beat us (and lost today) I still think overall they’re a lot worse than us. But they’re keeping their head above water because they have a striker that can put the ball in the net.

We have three strikers. Gray, Success and Deeney. Success hardly gets any game time, Gray has the control of a panic striken footballer Deeney is slow but can finish.

Sarr and Delafoo are not forwards, but they play more of a forwatd role than any of our three strukers do. Should we of kept Okaka? He maybe poor but he was at least physical and tried hard.

Welbeck was a massive gamble. He got injured at Spuds and we have no idea if or when he returns. When Predro joins, I can see one of those three going.

Full marks to Pearson. This is the first time in our latest Premier career that we’ve gone into a game against Liverpool or City away when we have had a proper game plan and haven’t been thinking solely about damage limitation (usually wildly unsuccessful) and/ or ticking the game off in order to move on to a winnable fixture. If only he’d been in charge since the start of the season, we’d be mid-table. Even allowing for our useless ‘strikers’.

Just seen Salah's first again - Great run back by Sarr - but unfortunately the challenge was a little crap.

Time to forget about this one. We made Liverpool sweat and they were nervous until the 90th minute. A side who have lost only once in their last 54 Premier League matches, the current Champions League holders and run away Premier League leaders. This is what we have to take away from this match and its something we have to take pride in.

Now we have Man Utd at home. It will be a full house. Fans, for the first time, will think we could beat one of the big boys. The atmosphere will be positive, and Watford must take advantage of this.

If we beat United (which means we'll have to score a goal....crazy notion I know but stranger things have happened) the season will suddenly come alive and have purpose. People will start to believe. But this initial lighting of the touch paper has to begin imminently (not Scott Duxbury imminent) and there's no better side to do it against than the mighty Manchester United.

Yeah, that’s what I thought at the time too. Kiko maybe could have done better but really Salah’s cut back would take a lot of better defenders out too. Then Sarr does all the hard work to sprint back but being an attacker doesn’t really challenge as desperately as the situation needed. A more defensive player throws themselves at the ball and I reckon would have half a chance of blocking the shot.

I agree nearly whole heartedly on this post but I think away to City last year Gracia had us set up perfectly. It took a Laughable decision to beat us that day,

And for those who think the performance is a catalyst for a win next week don't kid yourselves. Remember what United did to Sheff Utd in just a few minutes. Deadly on the break. Do you honestly think our goal shy team would come back like Sheffield did? No I don't. United front line would need to underperform. And i dont think they will. United wins.

I think our chances after another week with Pearson are a lot better than they were 48 hours ago.

Much better performance . We looked solid and actually managed to break incisively. We had some great chances to win it . Kabasele mopped up for us brilliantly . Thought Doucoure in the attacking role suited him more .

Still extremely worried by our finishing though . Pearson can’t put the ball in the net for us .

This must be down to nerves though . So a couple of results and a bit of momentum will hopefully kill this problem.

You think that the fact that we have scored half as many goals as any other team in the division is down to “nerves”?

EDIT: sorry, 2/3 as many. See Palarse have only scored 14.

My fear also. Another close but no cigar game if Rashford continues his current form.

It's 90% confidence, nerves, bottling, belief, whatever you prefer to call it. Mostly Doucoure, Deulofeu, Sarr etc have the ability. Liverpool had Salah, whom I dont think is a total footballer, pace and a good left foot and massive belief in himself. When he gets a chance he sees it in the back of the net before he's even hit it.

Yes I think that’s a big part of it . The tram was smashing them in from all angles when they were full of confidence . I don’t believe any of these players don’t have the ability to at least get a shot on target from 10 yards out

Some nice compliments by the journalist panel on the Sunday Supplement about how Watford played yesterday. They said we denied them space, were aggressive and created some good chances but have never seen non-finishing quite like that before.

Clearly they couldn't have seen Watford too often this season as that is standard for us.

How much have people seen of Brentford? I don’t a 2 minute highlight package on sky but actually watched them play. I ask because I see a few people mentioning these two and want to know what we’re basing it on.

If he was shy maybe he wasn’t confident enough to start and the management noticed that. Just throwing in a kid who isn’t mentally ready would have been far more ridiculous

Yes, definitely. Although as weird as this sounds we needed the awfulness of QSF and for things to get as bad as they have for them to have got someone like Pearson in.

After only four games there is no way they would’ve even contemplated a manager like Pearson.

They might have contemplated a normal Pozzo manager who was capable of having any positive impact on the team/keeping us up like all the others have, without throwing away 10 extra games, though. We need a Pearson type, and bear in mind he's taken charge of one game, in large part thanks to both how QSF conducted himself as Head Coach and the amount of time allowed to be chucked away as a spectacular rot well and truly set in.

    Mmm.

    GD: blows hot and cold.
    TD: plenty has been said.
AG: can rarely hit a barn door.
    ISaar: raw, unused to PL.
    DW: permanently injured.
    IS: *****.
    RP: generally can’t be arsed.
EC: decent on his day, but how often is that?
    AD: gone off the boil.

Seems to me it is much more than lack of confidence...

Well, I hope it is that because it strikes me that Pearson might fix that.

I worry more that these players are just not good enough (or at least, not good enough often enough).
