Excellent timing. Please see my posts in the Deeney thread about our fans utter obsession with the past and how it's always used as a convenient, but utterly ridiculous, excuse for present day failings.

I don't think the whole squad isn't good enough. I responded to you mentioning we have a "good core of British players". Our British players are Deeney, Gray, Cleverley, Chalobah, Hughes, Dawson, Cathcart and Foster. The vast majority of them are one or (mostly) a combination of well past their prime, hugely injury prone, serial under-performers, or just plain crap.

There are players I'd love to see giving a chance and play for us in the Championship, but it's pretty much none of those hideous cloggers from our British contingent, except for Hughes and perhaps Chalobah.

That Rodgers team had DeMerit, Cowie, Eustace and Doyley. Those four had more desire and played with more passion for this club than any of the w**kers in this current squad, even if we were crap.

Just enjoyed Boothroyd’s era, it was fun. Even with Danny Shittu and Darius Henderson crashing the box. Just didn’t like the way we were changed with Liam Bridcutt with a new approach and Danny Rose coming in as a winger

You're comfortably the worst, least funny and most boring troll I've ever seen on this forum. You do however now get the honour of being only the second person ever to be put on my ignore list.

There’s a lot of people with short term memories. Almost every season, with a few exceptions, from the mid 80s to fairly recently has been a bag of *****

As the question of your OP is whether or not this is the least likeable WFC team “of your lifetime”, surely it’s relevant to bring up the past if you think there is an alternative one then which was as bad, or worse?

So you hate the team , you hate the club, you hate the owners . Wouldn’t it be better for you to step away for a bit and do something else instead of Spending a huge portion of your time posting new threads about how much you hate everything about Watford ?

I mean seriously , for your own mental health!

There’s simply no joy for you. Posting on here will have no influence whatsoever on whether the Pozzos stay or go .

This is miserable admittedly , but if by some miracle We happen to stay up on Sunday I’ll be elated . I doubt it will change anything for you.

I didn't. We were poor, yes, but GT came back, we had a ridiculous few results (Devon White and Connolly destroying teams) and then we went down to rebuild. 2 years later we bounced back up 2 leagues. It was a great time.

I went home and away to most games those 2 years in the 3rd tier. Went to some absolute shitholes. Gifton made his debut. Rosenthal signed for us. We were linked with Tomas Brolin! But he was so fat we obviously didn't sign him.

Thinking about the question, I'm not sure I've ever really considered a Watford team in terms of whether it's 'likeable' before. What I do know is this current lot, especially as an 'established' Premier League team, have been more subject to scrutiny than any of their predecessors. Take Ben Foster. People bang on about his cycling thing yet would we have even known about that in a past era? MOTD was hardly banging down Alec Chamberlain's door to find out what his hobbies were. Capoue goes on telly and says how he loves the NBA and really isn't interested in football outside of match days. That's like a red rag to a bull for a football fan, but there must be loads like him in the game, who just see it and being at a club like Watford particularly as a job. And then we have players like Pereyra who speak to their home country's media about intending to leave at the end of the season - that wasn't an issue when we had a team stuffed with British players.

Basically, it seems rather unfair to blame them for expressing views that in a past era wouldn't have been reported, just because Oli Phillips was 'it' when it came to Watford coverage and no one outside South West Herts cared anyway.

I actually think the feeling behind the question means to say we want the players to 'like us' as fans and the club itself. And I think that's unrealistic at PL level for a club like us. Players are only going to come here for the £££. They're not coming for the history or to win trophies or to play at an iconic stadium or anything else that sets a club of our stature apart from others. The savvier players will not rock the boat, do the community stuff and have top bantz on social media with the fans, but it's absolutely guaranteed they'll be sitting down with their agent this week to start planning moves away. Which wasn't an option for a lot of Watford players I've seen in my lifetime either.

Eustace was brilliant. Exactly the sort of player we will need next season.

Exactly . Unfortunately this is football in the modern era .Commitment and connection are transient . It depends on the manager at the time ,whether he can motivate the players , the team dynamics, whether the team is playing well etc . Those seeking a real connection beyond this , I respect them for doing so, but I’m not sure it exists in the modern game, at least not in the top 2 /3 divisions .

I can’t stand Pereyra at the moment , because if he’d actually made the effort this season , we would be playing premier league football again next season just with one moment of magic from him . But when he scored the goal vs Chelsea in the 4-1 win I loved him and I felt a connection with him .

I’m not sure what the answer is for those seeking a real connection as I think they are harking back to a bygone era . They may think this is a low point but It’s just how it is now.

It's been very interesting to read all the posters on here saying "I'm done with Watford", "I'm not renewing my season ticket", "I'll do other things with my Saturday afternoons" and the like. What I think they're all really protesting about is not the state of WFC but actually the state of the game of football and the way it's now run.

I've had a ST continuously since 1979 when GT got us promoted to the old Div 2 and I intend to renew again when we can, because WFC has been a big part of my life and I see this upcoming relegation as just part of the natural cycle for a club like ours.

However, I also hate the way football has gone since the PL arrived. As someone posted elsewhere, it's ridiculous that you can have teams of such wildly different levels playing against each other in the same league. We used to laugh at Scotland and the huge discrepancy there between Rangers/Celtic and the rest. We didn't understand how a country like Spain could be so dominated by two clubs while, in England, an astutely run club could at least challenge to win our league. Now we are very close to only a couple of teams being able to win trophies here, due to the ever increasing concentration of money at the top.

In the end this is what will drive people away from the game, clubs at lower levels will die and it will result in football becoming essentially a TV sport, rather than one to enjoy 'live' as I have loved to do.

This opinion is far too considered and rational - please step away from the football forum.
