Last night showed, we have probably twenty players in our squad who could comfortably be in our starting eleven each week. You couldn’t say the same about Cardiff, Huddersfield, Brighton, Bournemouth, West Ham, Newcastle, Palace & Southampton

We also still haven’t lost wearing the green kit ( pens don’t count )

    Good times

Got to our turnstiles really quickly last night so decided to have a walk around the stadium as it's actually quite decent. The entrance to the Watford end had a small queue due to searches, but the queues to get into the Tottenham turnstiles were horrific, I'm talking a hundred meters at some of them.
Like Reading, Stadium MK has a common sense policy that allows smokers outside of the stadium at halftime. The stewards also couldn't have treated us better. It was a very pleasant experience. Such a decent stadium, such a shame it's in the wrong city.

    Relax, it's only an opinion.

Name me the last 5 winners of that cup without looking it up, pretty sure you can't. Totally meaningless.

If you prefer to have potential injury's to the first team squad members, over a pointless cup competition then that's your right to that opinion.

If it meant we would be a couple of places higher in the PL as a result of not fatiguing our players & take the bonus money that comes with it, personally I'd take that any day.

This particular competition is essentially put in place for Championship & L1 teams & fans to dream a little & I agree it's good for that purpose, but if you believe PL teams really aspire to win it, personally I think you're mistaken.

Personally, I can go back to 2005. I know all the winners have been City, United, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool. There are two standouts being Swansea and Birmingham and everyone remembers those winners because of the rarity.

I agree it's not as important or glorious as the FA Cup, but it is still a high profile competition. It would be nice to see Watford win a competition like this, just once.

In it's entire history there have only been 23 different winners. Luton, Oxford, Swindon and Swansea are part of that group.

Since 1961 when the competition started, it's been won by a "top 6" club 27 times. So, it's being taken seriously by all clubs. It's about time we joined that list and this season we had an excellent chance of going deep in this competition, only to be denied by an official who had other plans.

At the very least it was good live practice for the reserves. I didn't think for a minute we'd win it but it would have been nice for the B team to have had a few more run outs.

Interesting stats. Personally speaking I'd prefer never to be thought of & grouped in with the likes of Luton, Oxford, Swindon, Birmingham as one of those clubs "that once won a pointless cup" as the highlight of their recent history. To me this reinforces how ultimately irrelevant it is to win it Especially when everyone knows the competition is usually made up of mostly second string players in the early rounds.

I honestly would prefer no cup & focus on PL only. Again just my personal opinion.

  7. Anyway. This game is done.

COTK, where is the Arsenal thread?

Are you saying that any competition that isn't monopolised by the top 6 isn't worth bothering with?

If so, there's a job waiting for you in print or TV journalism!

    That isn't what I said.

For the likes of us you always have to be conscious of a relegation battle, that's why I think the priority has to be seen differently. The risk is too great in terms of the financials. For example what if Hughes had another injury last night? Even more worrying when you play a league 1 team, who don't care about the type of tackles they put in on their big day out.

Maybe I am the only one that believes that?

IMO as far as the league cup is concerned the squeeze isn't worth the juice. By all means it's worth it to see the second string, but that's it.

In any event I would give slightly more preference to the FA cup, over this one, but even then the same principle applies.

So our sole objective is to get enough points to avoid relegation? Maybe the players feel the same way, which would explain our post-Christmas collapses after good starts. But if that's all there is, I'd rather we were in the Champ competing for promotion - then there would seem to be some point to going to the matches.

Are you saying you’d rather take a couple of million quid by finishing a couple of places higher over getting to a Cup final?

And I presume from what you’re saying that if we got to a ‘pointless and worthless’ Cup final you wouldn’t go?

Dear oh dear - check out these 3 examples of the cringe-fest that is MK Jizzspurts -

Sky Sports got their jizzspurts fan on work experience to assess the match:
    Yu wot.jpg

The desperate insecurities of a club that had to kit out their 'home for one night only' stadium in the hope that it would make the decision to play at MK seem less tragic:

Actually posing for celebratory selfies, as if what had actually transpired over the 90 minutes - and whom it was against - was different to what everybody saw:

Yes, I believe that because PL status & the income it provides is the only reality & that is far more important to the club hierarchy than silverware. Even though they obviously would never say that publicly.

A league cup win is hardly remembered & is not even respected outside the winning clubs fan base.

  18. Hornet4ever

Hornet4ever WFC Forums Last Man Standing Winner 2018/2019

Yes, not because of the couple of million extra, but because to the furthest extent possible, being out increased the statistic possibility we had to stay up + climb the league by virtue of fitness & negating possible injury's that might have occurred by extended runs in a League cup competition.

Also from a nostalgic point of view I'd much prefer to see a Champ or L1 side win it, as that's what it's really designed for & non PL teams would rightly get more enjoyment from it overall & in terms of 'spread of wealth' those clubs could do with the competition money far more so than any PL team.

Just had a look at the clubs YouTube vid of last night (the different angle one) - showed a different view of Kabasele's 'foul', so have made a slow-mo gif of it.

Notice that the contact is on Ali's right foot, yet the swan dive with arched back comes after he plants his left foot, giving him the balance to perfect the move he's become so good at performing.

He's a cheat - worse than Zaha - but gets away with it because he's English, is one of England's 'main men', and plays for Fleet Street's favourite bunch of cheeky chappy Londoners.

    Good post.

I dont think that any of our players played well for a full 90 mins ( apart from Success, Cathcart and Mariappa). The rest were good and sometimes brilliant in moments but also made a lot of errors. But it was our system that kept us in the game and for much of it, on top.

And thats the great thing about a good manager and a system that everyone knows; it acts as a support for when things arent quite going right, fall back on the system , stop the opposition scoring and then strike when your creative players do get it right.

I genuinely dont think that was even a penalty.

Reffing decisions are starting to mount up against now.

    FOR
Capoue should have been sent off against Palace for tackle on Zaha

    AGAINST
Fosuh Mensah should have been sent off (twice) for a straight red or second yellow that wasnt given against RP
Penalty on Hughes v Fulham (also a second yellow for Mawson so Red)
    Delle s dive against Kabasele

If the only way we could get the Vic to expand upwards of 30,000 was to knock it down and rebuild, would you be happy if we used a similar stadia design to that of the MK stadium? Like, how was the atmosphere?

Or would you prefer we retain our current design but max it out at roughly 28,000?

To me, it looks modern and aesthetically pleasing whilst also retaining that rectangular shape but also in other aspects, it looks a little boring in the sense that there are no 'standout' stands (i.e there's no equivalent to the Rookery).

Asking as someone who hasn't been to Stadium MK whilst also being interested in how we plan to upgrade our seemingly small stadium, in a league where 30,000 seems to be the average for the teams outside of the top 6.

It's easier for me because i didn't see the game, but I've seen enough of Sema to think that his physicality and directness will make him a useful squad player. I don't think we've got another 50m player on our hands, but if he can come on and run at tired defenders in games or give us another option then that is what he's been brought in for.

It sounds like he had a bad day at the office though

If we had to move then that stadium is the perfect example of a new build that works. I'd rather not move from the Vic though, with a few thousand more capacity it's pretty perfect on its own.

This is a very sad and cynical view of football imo.

That balance sheets and turnover are more important than winning something.

Maybe it's an age thing or maybe once you've made more than 70000 posts you'll feel differently

Kabasele's one match ban has been overturned and he will be available for Saturday's match with Arsenal.

Lee Mason's punishment for being a useless **** is to be given the Man City v Brighton match. I feel very sorry for Brighton.

It's the closest we're ever going to get to proving how stitched up we were.

'Chirpy' John Reid, the grizzle pated plumber, was playing at the club last night and arrived just before our committee meeting.
Having hidden behind his towel after our legitimate victory,he was full of beans.
I reminded him it was a draw and he resorted to continuos grunts of 'u oh u errs' which I believe to be 'come on you Spurs'.
I replied with 'Tom Daley Alli'.
He went off in a huff, although a little slower, so probably a minute and a huff.

Didn't Gomes get his hand on Alli's penalty? Hasn't Gomes got one of the best all-time records for GKs saving penalties in the top flight? He is still a very good keeper and does not deserve so much flak.

Or maybe if you actually owned a football club you would feel & look at the situation differently & prioritise accordingly?

If it was so important why not put out your very strongest team each & every time.

Not really saying anything new here, all PL supporters, in the main, say the same thing. You can't deny the domestic cup competitions have lost some of their gravitas over the years?

I'm all for the domestic cups but in my opinion those competitions mainly benefit the Champ & L1 teams more so than PL teams.

If we hadn't had the good start to the season we've had, I wonder if your narrative re the importance of a league cup competition would be so passionate?

The right decision for Kabasele, and good news.

Very frustrating though that we would have to have trained yesterday ahead of the weekend not knowing what our centre-back pairing was going to be.

It's a pity there's no mechanism in place for dealing with these appeals faster, even straight away after the fulltime whistle.
