I have been doing a little bit of research and amazingly enough on Saturday, Watford secured their first top-flight victory against a side starting the day top of the table since the final day of the 1982-83 season, also beating Liverpool that day (2-1). Having gone back earlier I wondered if that would also apply to some of our top victories! 21/02/70 Home to Liverpool in the FA Cup we won 1-0 however they were standing 8th in the league 04/10/78 Away to Man United League Cup we won 2-1 they were standing 7th in the league 02/01/82 Home to Man United F.A. Cup won 1-0 they were standing 4th 14/05/83 Home to Liverpool we won 2-1 they were standing 1st 10/11/92 Home to Leeds League Cup won 1-0 they were standing 13th Just goes to show what a momentous win last Saturday was! it's also the biggest points deficit a side has ever bridged to win a Premier League game 55 points difference at the start of the game!
Was it 2-1 vs Leeds? I remember that game as our team got so excited we just left Cantona (I player I loved) all on his own for a free run from the half way line... but he missed/had his shot saved!
From the bbc website: Biggest points gap for a win... I’m guessing it is also true from before prem league as no one ran away with it so much? But that is just an assumption I can’t be bothered to check...
The Wigan win was amazing because Man Utd were chasing the title vs their bitter rivals City and not long before that Wigan looked doomed (I think they'd had only one home win shortly if not just before the Man Utd game). They also beat Arsenal 2-1 at their place, and thrashed Newcastle 4-0 who finished 5th in 2011/12 as part of their great escape.
