    It’s a FIFA rule.

As we've already signed him, I guess we could just wait til September and bring him over then. He seems pretty humble, level headed and really young. Hope the club really look after him when he comes over. I dont think we did a very good job looking after Isaac and Panda when they signed at a young age.

    This is the article:
    http://sportwitness.co.uk/dream-children-player-explains-hes-moving-watford/

I would infer from it that he doesn't know if he is moving in January 2020 or the summer of 2020. I personally don't think it makes a lot of sense waiting till the summer as the Brazilian league finishes near the start of December.

Surely if we already own him that rule does not apply, can't he just join our youth team?

If we own him then surely it must be on a loan back agreement or else he wouldn't be eligible to play in Brazil. If there is a loan agreement that will have an end date. I'd happily take him in September but a bit like Richarlison do we really want the potential of burning him out after playing most of the Brazil season and then most of the Prem. Perhaps best option is take him in January having had a couple of weeks off. Let him play in the Reserves for Jan as a "pre-season" and then let him rock the run in.

I don't think we do already own him. International transfers for Under 18s have strict rules. It's why Chelsea are currently facing a transfer ban and the big Spanish sides have been whacked by FIFA in the last few years. We cannot complete the transfer until the window after his 18th birthday. In the meantime I presume the deal itself is done so he can't be nabbed from under us.

The deal will be done in some format already in legal terms I'm sure. The club announced the deal on the official website and social media - doubt they'd go to that length if it wasn't cut and dried.

Whereas, has it been announced anywhere that we signed Stuparevic?

Interesting that you can't do the deal until he is 18 but it's ok to have a legally binding agreement that he must do the deal in the window after he is 18 ? How is that possible given it achieves the same thing ?

  10. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

I imagine the legal agreement is subject to an international transfer certificate being granted when he's 18. The aim of the rules, as I understand it, is to stop big clubs hoovering up children from abroad, moving them halfway around the world for a dream and then ditching them from their academy aged 17 in a strange country, with little support and no immigration status. And probably having missed crucial years in their home country. Academies are brutal enough for homegrown players who don't make the grade.

Hi Brentford fan from Rio here.

Just been to two Fluminense games this week. Both were against Cruzeiro, one in the Cup on Wednesday and one in the League on Saturday. In both games, João Pedro made a significant contribution, poking home an added time equaliser in the Cup game and scoring twice in a 4-1 win in the League.

Each time he came on as a late substitute - he's only played a total of 126 minutes of first team football, scoring 4 times with one assist. I came away from Saturday's game raving about the kid, only to be informed that he'd already signed for you lot. Granted, I've only seen him for a total of about 30 minutes on the pitch but he looked tremendous.

    Here's the goals from Saturday.

Fluminense have one of the best youth systems in Brazil and it looks like you have a very smart partnership with them. There's another young lad there called Marcos Paulo who is all of 18 years old who also looks very promising. He's in the video providing a couple of assists.

It used to be fun watching young players emerge in Brazil but these days, players are sold often before they've made their senior debut. At least Flu have got João Pedro till the end of the season. He has to wait till he turns 18 before joining you in January. The previous poster was correct that these are FIFA rules which also applied to the transfers of Vinícius Junior and Rodrygo (who is still at Santos) to Real Madrid.

Off topic: there is another U-20 at Fluminense a midfielder named Marcos Paulo who i think Watford should take a look because Fluminense young players are good and cheap. Apparently he will be playing for Portugal U-19.

Proper excited by this kid, I'd put him in the squad in January if I could, but a) would he get a work permit, and b) is he physically capable at this stage? Other than the fact that he hadn't had a break in like 2 years, Richarlison was definitely physically ready for the Premier League when he arrived at us, but this lad is a few years younger than him...

Just a quick follow-up to my previous post.

Contrary to received wisdom, Brazilian club football is usually pretty dire to watch, with safety-first, attritional and defensive tactics predominant. Clubs are petrified of getting relegated (4 out of 20 in Série A go down) and managers fear the sack (only 3 out of the 20 clubs started this season with the same manager as they started last season with). Palmeiras, despite being the richest club with by far the strongest squad, basically *********d their way to last season's title under Felipe Scolari.

However, João Pedro is in good hands at Fluminense. This year they appointed one of Brazil's most progressive coaches in Fernando Diniz. He is trying to introduce a more progressive, short-passing, possession-based style of play. It will take time and with a very young squad there will be setbacks. The problem is if they lose a few games and the club panics he could always get the boot. Hopefully, they'll be patient.

Anyway, the next game to look out for is on Thursday with an attractive looking Copa Sudamericana game against Colombia's Atlético Nacional. I'll let you know how he does - that is, if he gets some game time.

According to the interview with Joao Pedro, he and Marcos are long-time best mates. Marcos having a Portuguese passport could also be handy. Problem is, we already have a talented Portuguese player in a very similar mould of the same age.

Thanks for the post. As I mention above, supposedly he's best mates with Joao. However, from the clips I've seen of him - correct me if I'm wrong - he appears to be an attack-minded/number 10 type midfielder, and unfortunately that's one of the few positions we don't really have any need for more players in, not least because we usually play with a relatively defensive 2 in CM.

I think they are friends. Also i need to say i did not watch Marcos Paulo many times. Just few cameos in the professional. Looks very good but its a small sample. Is an attacking mid for sure. Nobody play with a 10 in Brazil anymore.

Fluminense is the poorest among big clubs and their players are cheap. Their academy is very reliable and formed some excellent footballers for big european clubs in the last years. Like Fabinho(Liverpool), Marcelo(Real Madrid), Thiago Silva(PSG). And some good players too like Wendell(Sporting), those Silva twins Fabio and Rafael who played for United, Carlos Alberto who won the Champions League with Mourinho at Porto and many others not so famous.

Yes he was playing deeper than João in an attacking midfield role. I'm no expert - I've seen the pair of them for a total playing time of less than an hour. But I liked what I saw!

He looks like an excellent talent and one which should make the club a lot of money. However, I'd be surprised if he's part of next season's squad. Not coming until January, then there's the barrier of obtaining a work permit. Unlikely we'll get to see him playing for us for quite some time.

I think Watford should try to convince Fluminense to loan him to other club. He will lose a season of his development because Pedro is just returning from injury and they will not be able to sell him this window. I bet soon or later they will throw Joao Pedro in the wing what is not good for him.

It should be close whether he gets a work permit or not. The fee is around what we paid for Richarlison. Hopefully the fact we paid that sum for him when he was 16/17 helps with the case. We could also do with him getting called up into the Brazil youth teams before he joins as that will also be a deciding factor.

Richarlison's arrival was pretty quick and straight-forward. JP could be the same.

Yes, of course and I hope you're right. He can only probably get a WP on the exceptional talent rule, but the path Richarlison blazed will hopefully open the door for Pedro as well.

Just seen that Pedro (not our one) has been called up for Brazil for the Toulon tournament (along with Marcos Paulo for Portugal) and the Brazilian federation aren't allowing clubs to block the call-ups despite the Brazilian season being in full swing. Imagine that might mean Joao Pedro might get a few starts in the upcoming weeks (tournament starts 1st June)

Doubt it, in fact I suspect more the reverse - likely to try and sign as many EU players as possible before there are extra visa issues to worry about.

The closest he'll get is a loan to a European mid table team. He'll probably have a stormer in his first season, have us all licking our lips at the prospect of him joining us and then he'll get sold for about EUR20m and become the best player at Paris St Germaine or something.
