I doubt he'd be happy being behind Minty in the pecking order.

Is it worth going back in for Toney in this window? Not sure we would stretch to £5m, but £3m might test Brentford's resolve?

Maybe a straight swap for Gray.

They might be tempted. Gray is lethal at this level. Championship PoTS a few years back.

Will never make it at this level (as some said)

No chance. Why would we swap, as our coach has said today, one of the two best strikers in the league for some nobody and never will be like Ivan Tony?

    Who Gray?

I think Toney has got all the attributes to be a very good striker, I would take him above any other Championship striker right now. He would turn our season around - he is big, fast, strong and a nose for goal. Imagine him and Perica or Pedro together up top.
He reminds me of Zaha but potentially better as he is stronger and more direct, give him a couple more years...

You’re talking as though you think there is an iota of hope that we might actually sign him ? You realise he was too expensive in the summer and would be 5x that price now and they wouldn’t sell to a promotion rival anyway....

Yes £25m cash. Or £35m and Gray.

Sorry didn't mean to give that idea.... No there's no chance of him coming to us, my comment was purely my view on the subject player and the fact I think he would have been very good for us..(some people don't seem to rate him.)

Without a shadow of a doubt he'd have been better than (insert useless ageing striker), but with our total lack of creativity I don't think he'd have been as good for us as he is for Brentford!

Sky bet have us at 12/1 to sign Toney. It seems absurdly unlikely and even if we did blow our entire budget on him it would feel like a bad deal given we passed on him last Summer.

We didn’t want him for £5m last season, so unless Brentford are prepared to sell for less than that I can’t see Watford being interested.

  18. I started to take an interest since xmas in him, and I have to be honest from what I've seen on the telly he's good but not £20M good. My impression is he does lash at things at times, he's not a top PL striker.

I don't see Toney moving at all, and certainly not to us, now that Brentford have gone up.

I think we did in fairness, it’s just we didn’t have a pot to piss in nevermind £5m.

In the real world we probably weren’t even 12/1 when he was for sale for £5m.

Probably not, but if one of the big clubs came in for him with a sizable offer it would be interesting to see how Brentford handle it. I certainly don't think it's impossible that this could happen.

  23. LeedsOrn

Maybe. But would have to be a top half club, offering £40-50m or so. And don’t think any are that interested. Maybe Arsenal or West Ham at a push.

Probably will be made to eat my words come the end of the season, but Toney is going to massively struggle in the Prem. The step up from the championship to the Prem is something we all know about, Brentford don’t.

Pukki 21 goals from open play this season
    Toney 22
    Armstrong 23

Yes penalties count, not saying that, but Brentford were awarded some pens that they won’t get in the Prem with VAR.

If they don’t change their style of play like Norwich don’t, they will get picked a part.

Toney for £5mil was a no brainer

Clubs taking a risk at £15-20mil - can see why

Clubs paying £20mil for a ST that has done nothing in the Prem is insanity. Could see a West Ham or Everton doing this though. Personally think he’s going to be a massive flop. One of those players that’s great in the Championship, but the Prem is to higher a step up.

Couldn’t disagree more. Toney is a far more rounded striker than Ollie Watkins, and I think Brentford’s style of play is currently the best equipped to stay up. Create far more than us and as good defensively - we just have a far better keeper

Cue hat trick on first day ..!

Who knows but wish we had him over Gray or Deeney .

Not saying much I know .

Does have that page and skill to do ok but yes Pukki also did well in this league but struggled in the Premier league.

  27. Their style is possession, but they are going to find 3/4 of the PL have better footballers and are better at possession than them, so I'm not sure they will find it easy. I have no stats but my perception is sides which tend to survive the first year are those which have a fast counter attack approach.

Guess we will see come the end of the season. Think Brentford will struggle and Toney won’t score more than 10. Brentford’s style will see them get smashed 3/4-0 by most teams if they don’t adapt and defensively they are poor. Not solid at all.

We might have had a slim chance to sign him had Brentford not been promoted, but now that they have we have no chance, and I doubt anyone else will either unless they are willing to pay really silly money, otherwise he will be staying at Brentford.

I wouldn't say he's 'better' or 'more rounded' than Watkins, but he does offer a threat that Watkins doesn't as much, he's a presence that gives defenders a handful even when he's not scoring. He only scored against us at the Vic from a stupid penalty given away by Kabasele, but he was magnificent in the second half when they were down to 10, Kabasele and WTE just did not know what to do with him. Someone like Santos Borre or Ugbo (if they sign for us!) may well score as many goals from open play as Toney in the Prem, but would they offer the same package as Toney?

I don't know if Raya is THAT dodgy, but their defense was fine this season with decent depth to it (not as good as ours, and will obviously be more challenged in the Prem, but still)

Had the lowest xGA in the Championship. They’re defensively solid, Raya just had a poor season

I did read somewhere that Spuds are interested in him, which may or may not be true, but if Kane gets sold on they'll be looking for a new striker & they'll have the cash too.

  34. lutonh8a

    lutonh8a Squad Player

Barnsley had the lowest Xga in the Championship last season. When teams attack Brentford their defence looks very poor. The main reason that they have low XGA is becaue they tend to have the majority of possession not because they defend well. This is something they won't have the luxury of next season in most matches and their dodgy defence will be put under more intense and consistent pressure.

Nah, Barnsley are 9th. Also, if possession = lower xGA, why are Norwich, Blackburn and Huddersfield (teams with the highest possession) outside the top 10 for xGA?
