Try again without using his 'middle name'. Anti-BBC (PC GOOOOOORN MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) rent-a-quote.

Incidently both Baker and Liddle 'forged' their careers at the beeb and both are Millwall supporters.

It's a funny picture yes but would anyone on here send that to a black friend who'd just had a baby? Idiotic move by Baker IMO.

In the current climate where the agenda is set by poe-faced grievance mongers it was clear that he'd be made to walk the plank. Perhaps Baker should have used the "Wayne Hennessy Defence".

Come on - Dannny Baker is not stupid whatever he would like us to believe. You genuinely think he tweeted a chimp photo regarding a person of Merkle's background and did not associate the two. So if he had thrown a banana for good measure that would be just because he likes fruit?

Are you saying people would have found it hilarious if they were not so po-faced?

It’s somewhat rich for you to complain about the excessive grievances of others when you constantly whinge on about yours.

Have to say that it hadn't occured to me that there was a racist angle. Mind you I hadn't even realised that her background included some ethnicity, though that might say more about my total disinterest in the royal family.

To be fair she made a big thing about it in her past. Moaning that there wasn't enough roles for people of mixed race. But I'm with you. When I first saw her on Suits I saw her as smoking hot rather than black. So I'm a sexist rather than a racist.
It's Danny Baker's only defence in that he didn't know her racial background. But the swift BBC axing suggests to be that they wanted an excuse to get rid rather than ask him to explain.

He’s essentially a freelancer and the BBC decided that it has had enough of his wit. That’s its call to make and I’d imagine the public would be broadly supportive.

I can’t imagine that another broadcaster would have done differently, do you?

Me too. He hasn't got 'form' for racism of any type as far as I'm aware, so if he had made the association and intended it to be a racial slur, then it was an extremely strong way to start off.

I sense his anger and bewilderment that his bosses (doubtlessly white people themselves) would tell him he's being sacked for race hate. Of course he should be sacked for such a stupid faux pas, but perhaps in the old days the boss would have taken him aside and said something along the lines of "look, we know you're not that sort of person, but you understand how this could be interpreted and I'm afraid it's going to mean we're going to have to let you go."

As for the BBC being 'right on', I care far less about the semantics and language and possible offence given than I do about the severe lack of BME faces and voices right throughout the main UK media, most especially in the upper echelons. If they were to get that balance improved, then the language and attitudes would look after themselves.

People get into trouble for Tweets and comments made years ago (our own Mr Gray for example) so there was no-way he was going to get away with this - and its not the first time Baker has been in bother with his bosses.

Eloquently put. The BBC exec's refusal to accept Baker's contention that he had not meant to cause racial offence with his crappy joke, seems to me, to suggest that sections of the BBC hierarchy believe that everyone associates monkeys with black people - which, to my mind, is far more offensive than anything Baker has done.

Come on Clive. Like you say he wasn’t sacked for being a massive racist, he was sacked for a serious lapse of judgement that may appeal to massive racists.

The BBC has fantastic diversity which is why all the massive co.cks on here think it’s anti-white somehow. It’s not, as you will be aware it’s like a showcase for conservative thinking right now when every white awakening ****head like Farage gets all the airtime they want.

You should support the good stuff it does and applaud the diversity, like visibly disabled presenters. It can’t always be easy for it to hold the line when the co.cks get on their case for anything.

Baker had year after year, show after show. He ****ed up. Presenters get paid serious money not to. Bye.

No, of course not. Does anyone who just sees an image of a banana think it is a racial slur - of course not - but when they are thrown onto a pitch at black players they clearly are racist - it is called context.
This is not just an image of a chimpanzee is it? The chimpanzee represents the son of the royal couple. So anyone seeing the image will ask themselves what does it represent? Even if I believed he did not make the obvious racial connexion I would wonder why he thought it appropriate to represent the boy as a chimp.
So you believe he did not make that connexion. Fair enough - there we can disagree.

But why a monkey? The baby wasn't wearing posh clothes.

Had he done something like Ray Alan and Lord Charles, I could kind of get it. The monkey depiction just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Again, performing monkey is all I can come up with beyond the obvious racist connection and that's a stretch. Or he just posted what is essentially a random photo of a monkey.

I guess the people who can see the joke in it are on a whole different plane of reality to me.
