Is Marco Silva all that?

This really should have been split into two threads as only three pages of it are about the merits (or not) of Silva and it was started by someone well known to be one of the more controversial posters on here. Or rename it something like "Silva - coming or going?"

For goodness sake. A few people have said this now but it makes literally no sense. Why would Silva allow his standing with the fans to be potentially damaged by declining to comment if he had no intention of leaving? And what does Gino gain out of that arrangement?

My reading of the situation is this. Silva is not desperate to leave but would consider talking to Everton if he is allowed to.

All his press conferences point to this being the case.

If the board stand firm then he happily stays. I don’t see him forcing the issue at all.

I think he’s happy at the club, but is tempted to see if the grass is greener when an opportunity presents itself.

How much do we want for Marco? Given he wants to go I would say give us 25m and he can go - the Pozzos will have someone lined up. With the squad we have we will be OK - we have some very good players.

Put the cash towards a left back an£ striker in Jan for the new manager to work with

Telegraph story now saying/implying that Gino is prepared to put him on gardening leave if he requests to leave .

  7. I would rather Gino held his nerve and said sod off to Moshiri, put Silva on gardening leave if necessary* - that would be a massive statement of intent.
    Still, it's not my money!

    * I don't think it will come to that.

Everton fans think its all down to giving us a couple more million than they offered. "It's all down to money".

Well in a way thats right, but only if we can find a new manager who we feel is risk free and will continue the good work and get us into the top ten where we appear to be heading. Everton fans - how easy is it to find a new manager 1/3 of the way into the season?

    How much risk is involved?

If we thought losing the coach at this point could see a predicted finish of 13th, 14th or 15th instead of 8th, 9th 10th then we lose about 6 to 10 million in prize money. Any offer so far from Everton ONLY covers anticipated loss of income from disrupting our coach halfway through a season. We parted ways with Joka, QSF and Walter of course, but waited until the close season exactly because it's a ball ache finding someone. Additionally if we went to huddersfield (for example) for Wagner we would expect them to want some compo, whats the point in accepting 10m from Everton to have to pay 6m to replace? Or we get Pardew in for free.

The additional risk is that we do not manage to find a suitable coach and whoever they put in flops badly leaving us in the relegation fight. If we were to get relegated would 20/30/40m be worthwhile compensation from Everton? The answer is emphatically no.

If Everton called in January and we had 28 points, then we could probably weigh up the risk of relegation and say it's so small and only need consider compensation to cover the potential drop in prize money. I've mentioned Troy Deeneys Leicester bids, 25m was a lot, but they clearly turned it down due to the effect it could have had, the risk analysis said we're better off 25m poorer short term, for greater chance of longer term economic benefit. Iggy could have gone to Man Utd but we only sold him when he lost form and became unimportant to the team.

So is it easy to find a manager 1/3 through the season? Ask Everton.

  10. Pretty much what Everton did with Lukaku

Sold him for what they thought was a lot of money then realised they couldn't get an equivalent replacement

We should have a baseline figure for premier league earnings and ask Everton if they'd like to cover that should we get relegated. Every year until we are promoted again. That would offset the risk.

It's all about the Pozzo s effectively saying we are no longer little old Watford and we won't stand fir getting sand kicked in our face. The pundits are all for sustaining the old order by suggesting he would be mad to stay at Watford and Everton are a much bigger club but for anyone outside the to six things have changed with influx of tv money. Hope Gino holds firm and tells Mishri to f off.

Wonderful scenario analysis. Siren calls for Silva to go are unattractive if we have a few extra millions in the bank but end up with Pardew. As the advert says...'you do the Maths...'!

  17. For what its worth I think Everton have been playing this all wrong

£10m is peanuts to Gino, I don't know what the Pozzo family wealth is but its a lot

If Everton really want Silva they need to offer Gino something he wants

My guess is offering Gino pick of the Everton's U23 squad might be tempting

As a football coach myself it is easy to question tactical decisions in hindsight. Silva's tactical decisions have been logical (i.e. Watson at Chelsea)
Another thing I have noticed is that Silva appears to be a good man manager and motivator. If he does leave (which I don't think will happen yet) it will have a detrimental effect on the team; those saying it won't are clearly wrong.

In my personal opinion, he'd be crazy to leave us for Everton. Here the squad is balanced and has a good mix of youth and experience, he knows the players. Everton appear to have a team that would not suit his style of tactics at all at present and he could quite easily find himself managing a team in the relegation zone by January, are they likely to attract his type of player and be able to get them over the line by the end of the winter window? Open to debate.
It'd be safer for him both reputationally and for his career to stay until the end of the season.

There was a splendid cutaway shot of a relaxed & genial Holebas sitting in the dugout. It was just after Britos, on receiving the ball 40 yards out following a 20 pass move, elected to shoot. The ball is probably still bouncing around the cemetery. Holebas & Capoue appeared hugely amused by the vignette.

I think the situation is pretty farcical to the extent that the Club has clearly said (Friday being the latest) that Silva isn't going anywhere and yet we have Everton, the media and some so called pundits still speculating as to whether he's going to stay or not. What part of the Club statement do they not understand?
