Is Gino Right About Managers?

This is something that I’ve been thinking about for a while now and after what Xisco has achieved I’m genuinely confused.

It’s always seemed like Gino doesn’t really rate the role of a manger that highly, and that is a view that is pretty much at odds with everyone else in football.

This is not a dig at Xisco in the slightest, but he came into the role with minimal experience as we all know, yet he’s performed miracles.

At the time of Ivic’s sacking, understandably there were calls from some for managers like Paul Cook (this is just one example that springs to mind, not saying everyone wanted him). Experienced, knows the league, has had relative success with other championship clubs.

Yet it’s pretty impossible to imagine he could’ve done a better job than Xisco, in fact it’s almost certain he wouldn’t have.

So what does all that experience actually count for? When a club appoint Warnock, or McCarthy, are they getting an experienced championship coach, or are they in fact missing a trick?

Or, do we just have a great squad who anyone could coach to promotion?

As I say, I’m genuinely confused.

Pozzo approach seems to work, but it is at the cost of lack of respect for managers from players. The players know that Pozzo has no respect for the position so at the first sign of conflict the players know the manager will be out so act accordingly. I think it produces a poor culture, but some may consider it worth it if it produces results.

Fully agree, at the point we appointed Munoz we’d become a joke (in the context of also sacking Pearson with 2 games left) and lots of questions were asked about how much the players would respect him... yet he’s performed at a level I can’t imagine any other manager we could’ve appointed would have. Hypothetical of course, but if we’d appointed Warnock instead would we be where we are? Obviously it’s an impossible question to answer but I’d guess that we wouldn’t be. That’s what makes me question the role of a manager and is it in fact not as difficult/important as most clubs believe it to be.

I doubt anyone could match Munoz results. Right person at the right time. Improved morale and arrived at a formation that suited the players available. I think he deserves a chance next season whatever division we are in. Ironically he is more likely to keep his job if we don’t go up I imagine.

Up until the cup final his decision making was flawless. Not sacking gracia after that match was the beginning of the end, and almost every decision since has been baffling, including getting munoz. The performances under munoz have been regularly underwhelming considering the players so it is still an error of judgment for me.

Hopefully it is back to business as usual this summer with another managerial change.
