So, my car is a write off after an accident involving no other cars, and I'm being paid out by my insurer, Co-Op.

Does anyone know if this will completely void all of my NCD, which was (idiotically) unprotected, or just reduce it down?

I cannot seem to find anything that answers the question in the policy documents or the FAQ's.

Something was mentioned on the phone the other day about it but I can't actually remember what they said. Will ring them again tomorrow but if anyone has any clue now it'd be appreciated!

There’s a table on Page 31 of this which covers it:

    https://www.co-opinsurance.co.uk/si...insurance-policy-document-december-2019_0.pdf

It all depends on what level of NCD you currently have and if this is your first claim in the current year.

I'm well aware it'll be affected, just wasn't entirely sure to what extent.

Assuming you’ve been with the Co Op for 2 years already then yeah, I think so.

Don’t forget though while NCD is helpful, if they now decide the risk you present has gone up massively as a result of this accident, you’ll presumably still see a big rise in the premium at renewal whatever discount they apply.

It's only a small victory but I took great satisfaction in telling Hastings Direct to 'GFT' at renewal time just now.

the insane thing is even if you have NPD and have an accident (that isn’t your fault - in my case in a car park having just got out of the beautifully parked car , followed by somebody not paying attention and driving into the back of it) the insurance company still put you renewal price up because you have had one accident so are more likely to have another.

Yeah, that happened to me. It was my fault to an extent as I forgot about an accident and when I sent them my NCD proof it was on there, but it was a no fault claim, completely the other sides fault and paid for by their insurance company. They had quoted me something like £400, but then wanted to add over an additional £100 to the cost because of this one no fault accident that was over 3 years prior. When I said I wanted to cancel them they said it was something like £50, but as they were the cheapest policy it still wouldn’t have made sense. I basically argued non stop with them and they agreed to reduce the increase to £40 in the end.

Same happened with my renewal - NCD protected but when I had to give details of the no-fault accident that wrote off my last car the quote 'magically' shot up by £30...

Renewal for the Meistermobile came through. Was £20 more than last year and a good £100 less than any of the comparison sites offered. That has never happened before. Max ncb.
Remembered that I currently have a 2nd car, emailed them and this got me £20 off the rest of the current policy and reduced the renewal further.

It must be the heat - I've just spoke with the, normally, obstructive and rude harridans who comprise the receptionist team at my GP surgery and they were helpful and really nice...

Not overly related to this thread but I bought a TV back in November for around £750.

A friend of mine was putting it on a wall mounted bracket for me last night and the screen has broken. Obviously not covered under warranty as it was accidental damage.

I have a £100 excess on my home insurance policy so at first glance I'm thinking I should make a claim and at least get it replaced for £100 (I added accidental damage cover when I bought the insurance).

I've been doing some reading up online and read that for some claims it isn't worth putting it through as our renewal cost will go up but surely in this case it makes sense to do it? We don't have any NCD as we only bought our first house in March so are in our first year of insurance anyway.

Sometimes its worth playing around with a website like go compare and seeing what difference there is in quotes if you add the claim. You don't need to take out a policy. I did this when he had c£400 of roof damage in the Spring storms. £100 excess. The increase in premiums was only about £30 so I went ahead and made a claim. However we had many years of no claims so might be different for you ?

You'll have to declare the claim for 3-5 years depending on who you subsequently insure with and their rules. So you'd have to factor in increased premiums for that period. I'd doubt the increase would be £650 over that period so it's probably a worthwhile claim, though might be worth calling your insurer and finding out if they'd be organising a repair (and then writing it off if cost of repair is more than residual value of the TV) or replacing old for new.

Get your friend to pay for it. If he won't, take him to the Small Claims Court.

(Guess what my profession is! :D).

    Thanks for the advice.

I've checked on comparethemarket and it looks like our renewal quotes are around £60 more expensive when I add the claim so not too bad compared to hopefully £600+ for a new TV.

I'll ring the insurers to see if they would likely replace it or try and repair (I rang a Sony repair centre and they said they wouldn't be able to fix it so hopefully the insurer will just replace the TV).

I'm surprised that TV screens can't be replaced in the manner that phone, laptop etc screens can.

It may say it in the docs they sent when you took out the policy. Other thing that's worth doing is checking whether the same model is still available in the shops or not. If it's not, it's worth having what you consider to be the best match in mind in case they don't repair it.

I guess that a TV is pretty much 90% screen, even as a Smart TV, compared to a phone or tablet, where there is much more tech behind it in the form of processing power etc. so it's worth replacing one, but not the other. That's complete speculation though.

Just done the online comparison - JFC a 30% increase on last year's quote (and nothing's changed).

Looks like most car insurance quotes are minimum 20% up from last year. Maybe the effect of phasing out the ‘cheap new customer’ quotes?

I am being quoted a 75% increase in my insurance. I have made no claims and do very very few miles per annum - and the car is electric.
Checked on price comparison sites and my insurers are offering insurance as a new customer on there for only 70% increase.

If you haven't before, try the good old go-compare website, ring to cancel you existing, quote the cheapest on the list, and magically your insurer will still match that quote if it's like for like. My quote went up about 30% and then they took 20% of that back off when I quoted the "one man and his dog insurance LLC" premium to them.

I do that every year. The cheapest was still 20% dearer than last year. But it did force my existing insurer to almost match it; with the benefit of paying monthly at no extra charge and also being able to cancel at any time with only a month’s notice.

I haven't had a quote from my current insurer - all the numbers came from two comparison sites.

My current insurer quote was up about 18% from last year, so I put all the details into a comparison site but I couldn’t better it.
