    Avocado comes from the Aztec word for 'bollox,' presumably because they look like a wrinkly ballsac.

    I had always just assumed it was linked to the Latin word for lawyer, turns out it's just a coincidence

    I know that it's ripe if the label on the packaging says "Ready to eat" or "Ripe". Does that make me middle-class?

    I think that is to do with the Latin for witness: cue my second year boys giggling at 'testes'.

    The test for avocado ripeness, is to put it on toast. If the Daily Mail writes an article saying you could have bought a house if you hadn't done that, then it's ripe.
