Considering I was one of the big whingers about the £20 deposit (for people who have already paid £100+ deposit), it may surprise you to hear I actually don't have an issue with this. I'd be spending approx £20 per match for my ST (plus petrol, food, drink etc), it's the same price as a Now TV day pass, and the money goes directly to the club rather than into Sky's pocket. Providing the quality is good and reliable, I'm all for it until we're allowed back in.

So outside of the UK they should be available for the whole season for Watford as well then?!

A tenner a match for 2nd tier 90 minutes of entertainment feels a bit steep to me. It's no comparison to attending a match in person and I suspect the quality of the offering isn't exactly going to be at Sky levels of production. Hopefully they'll offer a £100 season ticket or something similar.

Bargain for us outside of England. I would happily pay that. Still believe they will all be free via the usual online betting sites. Unless the pandemic has effed that up too.

£10 per home match means, given the pace of the Championship season, probably £20-40 per month.

At that price, I could get Premier Sports' four channels (£9.99 per month) and all of BT Sport (around £15-20 per month) or Sky Sports (price varies depending upon your provider).

Suspect this won't be the big money-maker that Watford thinks, given that price point and the likely quality of the feed and commentary.

Does this Hive thing work on a lap top or TV (via Youtube?)

Basically our commercially aggressive club, that are holding ST funds from last season have managed to prise another £20 out of us in the name of secure your seat.
Surely if you havent asked for your cash back its pretty plain and obvious you will renew.

Due to this there are no actual season ticket holders so they can now charge us an extra £10 per game.......what a con!

Will the radio stream still be free? Quite happy to listen to that then just watch us on streaming sites when we are on.

But the only alternative surely is to be asked to pay the full balance of your season ticket immediately, even though there's no telling when you can actually use it, and be given free access to the same Hornets Hive product?

So say your season ticket seat is in the Rookery. That's £438 renewal. But you have the full credit on account of £115.26 plus the £20 you've just paid. So for a 20/21 season ticket you'll have to pay the balance of £302.74. Divide that by 23 (number of home games) and you get a cost of £13.16 a match. Yet our "commercially aggressive club" is charging you £10 to watch online instead.

I've assumed you're paying full adult rate here. It's a worse deal for O65s but I don't think they're the target audience for the streaming product really. However, the flip side is for £10 you could have your whole family round to watch whereas if you're all season ticket holders the cost of attending would be far far higher.

If they're holding ST funds from last season it's because you've chosen to let them do that. I've every intention of renewing but got my refund out of them at the first opportunity. You still ask if you want - I don't see they can hold it against your will.

No. Back to the annual subscription model by the sounds of it.

"A live audio stream will also be available for ALL games for a single, one-off payment covering the whole season. Details of this will be included in a specific 'Hive Live' communication within the next few days."

Commentary will still be on 3CR, but if you want to listen via the website or app then you'll have to pay.

I believe this has more to do with the EFL digital audio rights than a choice by the club.

£460 for UK based fans and £140 for overseas fans?

How is that in any way fair?

Do they seriously think think people are just gonna bend over and pay that?

Lots of people bed wetting on Twitter that it’s cheaper for overseas fans to watch on Hive Live and how dare the club betray its most loyal domestic fans. Pretty sure that the club has just adopted the payment plans and options mandated by the EFL. The club have ballsed up by not stressing further (though they vaguely mention it in the website) that they don’t set these prices. https://www.efl.com/news/2020/august/all-sky-bet-efl-matches-available-on-tv-or-online/

For some reason I can never seem to pick up BBC3CR on any of the radios inside my house but I can get it on my car radio, so I'll be spending my Saturday afternoons sitting in the car listening to the radio! I think this may be the final straw for my wife...

It's a hedge loss of ticketing attendance from domestic fans. The domestic cost is always going to be higher because of that, coupled with the fact that overseas fans are less likely to pay for it (outside of expats) so they can't afford to charge too high.

Still, I think it's a tad overpriced, working out at about 60 quid a month for UK fans versus a more reasonable but arguably still excessive 18 quid for those of us overseas. I don't think a single club's games are worth 4 times a Netflix subscription in the UK and 2x a Netflix subscription in the US, for example, but then I don't bid for TV rights.

I wonder if they'll use the 3CR feed as the commentary for video feed? That'd be grand if so.

@Arakel has pretty much explained why. Don’t forget the domestic service will be binned as soon as capacities reach a decent level again. In normal times clubs don’t offer domestic video streaming options at all because they want people to attend rather than sit at home.

And I reckon people will pay and in good numbers but if the rivers turn out to be plentiful all the better.

It reads to me like Jon Marks is going to be exclusively on the club platform from now on? In which case, I’m not sure there’s any big plus to linking it in with BBC 3CR who will presumably be using a different commentator.

UEA and Arakel - you’ve explained well the EFL’s rationale, but the Club actually had no control over setting prices, domestic or international - those are fixed by the EFL. Where the club has deviated from other EFL clubs is by not having season tickets until the picture re fans’ return to stadia is clearer

Will hive live have a playback feature? I know for sure I won’t get to watch all games live.

Likewise. I think the club haven’t figured it out yet. iFollow, the EFL’s streaming service, does provide full match replays so I think there’ll be some pressure to mirror that.

I’d say it’s likely. From a technical perspective it’s very easy to make a VOD available after the fact; the live stream is the more challenging part, and you can generate the VOD as a byproduct of the video stream.

Cheeky buggers put it up by 2 quid! It was a fiver outside the UK. I knew I saw it somewhere. This confirms it, only it’s now £7.

Although I am tempted by the £140 season package.

I don't understand all the moaning about the cost. For someone who normally has a season ticket this is much cheaper and even more if more than one of you normally attend games. I would much rather be going to the games, but this is an option that is not over priced.

£140 is a bargain. The whole season for less than it costs me to travel to Watford on one occasion... Happy days.
As for the moaners, if your not happy don't pay to watch.

£10 a game isn't too bad. Usually costs me around £80 to travel to home games (including ticket). I presume we'll have quite a few games on Sky as long as we're doing okay in the league.

I think what is confusing people is that some club's fans are getting it for free, but the difference is THEY HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THEIR SEASON TICKETS. We haven't, and won't until we can attend regularly, so in the meantime this is essentially a pay as you go option. If you'd rather give the club £400+ now, I'm sure they'll happily accept and let you watch the streams for free!

The other issue is that we have gotten used to free (but not quite legal) streams of every game in the Premier League. Unfortunately until the streaming sites manage to access the club's own feeds that is a thing of the past. I hear that some do but it seems to be rare as there is only one source for each game instead of multiple sources of every game.

Not sure why £140 for non-UK but around £400 for being within these borders.

Do you think they'd notice if I moved my address 20 miles across the English Channel?

If we have a midweek game or it is moved for Sky then the game is free on Hive. Assuming that the Easter weekend games being played on Friday and Monday are classed as "midweek" I calculate that we have 16 games which will be free. We already know Middlesborough has been moved to Friday 11th September so 17 free games on Hive. I anticipate that at least another 8 games will be moved so I am guessing that 25 games then become free on Hive. Therefore if we cannot attend any game this season and watch every game on Hive the cost is roughly £230 (which includes the initial £20) for the season. I would say that is not too bad in comparison to going out regularly to other events.
