If reports are to be believed we offered him + £10m in a failed bid for Asmir Begovic while he was playing in the match against Arsenal. Not sure how he will react to that?

Otter, very impressed, especially as you had written it in reverse to get the names in order on the front page.

Gomes continues to do a great job for us overall, however, we do gave the occasional clanger and regular heart in the mouth moment ( including yesterday late on coming to day off his line and then showing us how he can beat the opposition last man with not a little concern for us supporters).
For me next season he either retires ,moves on or is our number two. Number 2 at the Vic would be my preference as he shows great passion for us.
We need a qualifying home grown quality replacement which would allow us to maximise on field quality foreign players.
In the meantime keep up the good work, stay fit so we don't have to suffer our back ups to much more this season.

I more or les agree with that, but I would say the HG keeper we bring in would have to win the shirt off Gomez not automatically replace him straight away.

That occasional clanger appeared yesterday and cost us,just when you need the keeper to show composure (although if he had he would have been the only one in yellow doing so accepting he was in purple!).
If we are to move forward he has to be replaced as our number 1.

Hopefully we can get Pickford, Hart or Courtois in the summer.

    From http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co....he-stats-say/story-30188795-detail/story.html

"The highly-rated Southampton keeper Fraser Forster has the worst ratio of any regular - he has only kept out 55.3 per cent of shots.

Swansea's Polish number one Lukas Fabianski is not much better, he's made 77 saves at just 56.6 per cent.

Wayne Hennessey at Crystal Palace and Artur Boruc also have worse shot/save ratios, whilst Hugo Lloris, Victor Valdes, David De Gea, Kasper Schmeichel and Petr Cech's are all higher.

This show Gomes to be a solid top flight keeper, and fairly representative of where the Hornets are in the table.

If the Hornets want to move to the next level, they may need to invest in a new keeper, but they must be careful."

Saw this today and it more or less sums up my views on Gomes as a player. I'm actually quite a fan of his, I think he's done a great job helping us get promoted and staying up and he very obviously cares about the club. But at some point the management is going to have to admit that he's a mid-level goalkeeper and at 36 he really doesn't have any time or opportunity left to improve. His contract's up after next season and I can't justify keeping him any longer than that. Ideally we'd sign a talented younger keeper this summer and let Gomes finish his contract as a number 2, I suspect he'd take to being more of a spiritual leader and mentor. Gomes deserves to leave with some fanfare and on good terms with the club and supporters, but Watford aren't going to become contenders for a title of any sort within his career.

I understand the bigger picture in wanting to bring in a new goalkeeper - but of all the players to potentially lose their place next season I think it's massively harsh on Gomes. I'd prefer a decent number 2 to be brought in as an understudy to work with Gomes and then replace him in a season or two's time.

Trouble is would a decent number 2 what to sit on the bench behind a guy in his mid-late 30s?

You're too nice. We have to be clinical at this level I think. Gomes is a good goalkeeper but clearly on the way down. He's experienced enough to know competition is nothing to be worried about so either we win because he ups his game or because we have someone better between the sticks.

Yeah I agree, I'd most likely be a crap manager. My worry is though that we bring in somebody who's younger yet not actually any better than Gomes.

There's many more positions I'd like to replace before Gomes becomes a concern. Pants is a decent backup.

Gomes knows whats up, if he isn't wanting to leave then I imagine he's willing to fight for the Number 1 spot, or help with the transition to a new long-term number 1 - if he wants to go the club will help in anyway possible considering what he's done for the club over the last few seasons.

Good interview with the club put up today about his new contract. It's a really good example of why Gomes might be my favourite player at Watford- he's humble, soft-spoken, truly loves the club and believes in the project. Top man and has my full confidence going into the next season.

I really love (in the football fan talking about a player sense) this guy. He's been great, has the connection to the fans, seems a great character. Still a good GK.

But......I do think he's becoming a little bit slow. Watching MOTD last night at the other games, there were many times I saw GK's get out quickly and essentially prevent the shot in the first place or make it almost impossible to score. Also his kicking is pretty poor, nearly gifted Bournemouth a chance twice in 30 seconds with poor clearances.

I guess you have to weigh up the pros and cons. Happy to have him this season still but wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to bring in a younger model.

he's one of those players I feel bad even suggesting he shouldn't be playing and if there were a dis-like button I'd hit it myself for this post!

I think he is still a top GK and could do a job for us for a few more seasons yet, but probably not as No1?

If he was happy to do this, I think he could gradually drop down the GK pecking order over the next few seasons, as I would be confident of him stepping in and doing a job if and when needed. First of all as our No2, then as our number three, and eventually I can see him as our GK coach.

In fact maybe his next contract could be as a player coach, and I can see him as a club legend for many years to come.

Part of the problem is that he has been so good for us that no other keeper gets a look in. Pants gets a bit of stick but I've hardly seen him play. Any no2 will need a good run to assess them fully. Unless Gomes gets injured I don't know how we'll resolve the issue. As VOR posted, I think that Gomes has a few more years yet.

Can't deny that I enjoy collecting a lot of pictures of anything Watford related, especially now that current technology has made it so easy! And the only thing stopping me reposting these in years to come in the history thread is a hard drive crash (and perhaps also if oldwatford.com is taken offline being as I use a lot of their stuff, although I do always credit them:)).

Truth be told - I'm just making the most of this current "golden" period at Vicarage Road. I saw the last season of GT's first spell at the club, meaning I'd missed the best part that went before. As we all know - he moved on, Bassett came in, and after that we mostly stunk the place out until GT returned (how miserable were the 90's overall?!) Our prem seasons under GT and Aidy weren't enjoyable, so I'm making sure to collect as many souvenirs as possible whilst we take on the games elite because such is the mad, uncertain world of football these days - we can never be totally sure that we won't slip back down the divisions (although I'm confident as long as the Pozzos' remain, we'll be ok).
