    Simply name this object.
I think it is most commonly called a record player.
My girlfriend insists it is called a vinyl player

Record player. Or turntable my folks would have called it. But most commonly a record player.

Never a vinyl player. Grounds for dumping imho. Maybe a bit harsh but it depends on how stubbornly she sticks to something so blatantly wrong. Time to ask her what she believes most people would call it. if she still insists its a vinyl player then dump her now and save all that undoubted aggro in future life.

That my son is a phonograph.. latterly known as a turntable or a record player.

Some hipsters might call them vinyl players but i never heard that term back when those things weren't retro.

In my world it’s a turntable. A record player was/is a self-contained unit with its own amplifier and speaker(s). It was the modern development following the piece of furniture my parents’ generation used to own: the radiogram.

Close.. but i was born the year after.

RD must be older than me as "gramophone" entered his mind and he went to Aylesbury Friars gigs before i did.. i think.
He's 55 ish if i had to guess.

If it makes you feel better, Stevo, I had you younger than your actual age.

I assume most posters on here are younger than me. The exceptions (apologies in advance if I offend anyone):
Older than me: RookeryDad; IBlameBassett; UnhappyBunny; zztop; The Undeniable Truth; Diamond (because he has older children)
Same age (ish) as me: moog; KnightGT; Meister

Correct. Why did I vote for record player when we call ours a turntable? Probably because I'm being distracted by the second most boring live match I've seen on TV today

    "Turntable".

If there were two or more of them then also perhaps "decks" (as in "record decks").

Record player or turntable although imho (humble) a turntable is really used for more high end stuff where you buy tonearms and cartridges separately according to your taste.

Unless your girlfriend is trying to make you grow a beard & man bun, wear jeans 3 sizes too small and ditch your socks, put up with her, but 2 strikes out of three and she should really get the elbow.

By the way, there is only one proper turntable.

Funny how "decks" is only ever used in the plural. Never heard anyone refer to a single one as a "deck"

Anyway my definitive answer to the naming is as follows..
Phonograph- Technically the correct name as they were invented as such.. though nobody has used the term since the 1940's
Gramophone- Replaced the term phonograph but actually started off as a brand name. These were generally wind up devices.
Record player- Stand alone electronic device with or without seperate speakers. The term seems to have come about post war.
Turntable- Name used when separate hifi units were introduced.. to differentiate between tape deck, tuner, amp etc.
    Decks- For DJ's
Vinyl player- If you google it it does seem the term is used in certain circles. My guess here is that since the comeback of vinyl records the vinyl part of the name has been added to clarify their exact usage.

Looking at the newer devices on the market i can understand why record player might be the most widely used name as most seem to be stand alone devices.

Referring to my earlier post you have left out ‘radiogram’ and, slightly later ‘stereogram’. These were pieces of furniture in the 60s, before hi-fi separates, which incorporated record and radio playing (not cassettes I don’t think) in an attractive cabinet that included record storage. They were for people from the generation before me who thought they would never have to buy anything else!

The next audio trend will be wax cylinders. This is my official recommendation to invest.
