I don't know the in's and out's of this particular case, but it's about time that someone is standing up to the press and media, as they seem to think they can do or say what they want.

It's time the MEDIA got back to just REPORTING on the news rather than trying to CREATE it in their own agenda.

Let's hope Michael Gove's wife, Sarah Vine is named in the suit - she's a particularly vile piece of work.

The use of the word 'niggling' was calculated.

Any 'rules' put into place after the death of Diana and cases like Millie Dowler are ignored by Sarah Vine and others of her odious ilk on the grounds of the rights of a free press, claiming it's in the public interest. Complete rubbish of course. I'm ambivalent towards royalty but everyone has a right to privacy and even if Meghan's dad did share her private letter to him to the press, they shouldn't have published it, let alone 'commented' on it (ie. used it as an opportunity for character assassination - getting an 'expert' graphologist to 'interpret' from her handwriting that she's a narcissist).

Obviously many on here think it is all fair game. If the press can be applauded for recordings made in a private home, of an argument between a couple in the next flat, they must think anything goes.

Didn't The Mail recently describe something in relation to Prince Harry and Meghan as a "royal car crash"?

    Disgusting paper.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to record an argument in an adjacent private flat, from a collective hallway, on the grounds that you might have concerns for the safety of the female in the flat. You're an ex polisman. You should know this.

That recording might have had a political motive. Or it might have simply been concern for a potential victim of domestic violence. Or something inbetween.

No matter, it is in the public interest surrounding an imminent PM. So the Guardian was right to publish. Let the public form their own opinion around a record of fact.

    Yeah, course it was.

Splashing it all over the worlds media, was nothing to do with scoring any political advantage, it was only to protect the girlfriend who the police had already confirmed was absolutely fine, before sending the recording to the press. Absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the bloke dislikes Boris, is a Labour activist and remainer, and that the Guardian is likewise.

And where is this "record of fact"? Is that the one that the Guardian has refused to release in full, but prefer to publish little snippets?

I must be honest Cleyhorn, we agree on some things, and we disagree on other things, but I hadn't put you down for being naive or blinkered like the others.

Always have to bring it back to your boy...is it an obsession or a compusion?

I'm not. Being 'naive' and 'blinkered' is a self-critique directed at yourself by definition as far as I can see. And a particular trait of yours is that you will brook no criticism against you or your chosen few.

    Polisman.

I think you need to turn your spell check on.

We just have different views of how we see privacy.

If you think it was all down to "protecting the girlfriend" and not politically motivated, than that is up to you.

I think it's fair to hold a PM to higher account than the ceremonial 6th in line to the throne or whatever he is. An argument with implications about the character of a man who has clearly fallen well below the acceptable threshold for public office on numerous occasions is different from a private letter between a duchess and her estranged father.

Having said that, it seems a little precious of the Royals. They have a life of privilege and wealth, because of their status. That status makes some dullards interested in every facet of their lives. They are like people from TOWIE or Love Island. If you can't take the pressure of being a shameless publicity whore who will do anything to stay relevant, it's not the gig for you.

I would never read a story involving these people, because I don't give a **** about them and am all for republicanism.

100% agree. Anyone marrying into royalty and expecting an iota of privacy is a fool. Their private life screw-ups are the only thing of remote interest they provide to the country in return for the vast cost of keeping them in their life of privilege.

As senior royals Harry and Meghan have a duty to the public. However they are also people. Every person has the right to some privacy. Publishing a private letter from Meghan to her father cannot be said to be in the public interest - it is just an example of low life journalism. However if her father sold it then the blame should be placed on him not who published it as he could have stuck it on facebook. It is the sad fact about social media. Meghan needs to become more savvy. If she sends a letter to someone she does not get on with she needs to think what they might do with it.
In her shoes I would learn a lesson and not have made it a bigger story than the MoS did. I would also in future only send letters that will self destruct 5 seconds after being read.
