Yes although he never quite grasped ITV’s advertising based business model. His insouciant ‘And now to the adverts so make yourself a cup of tea’ lingers in the memory.
GT was one of the very few managers in the last 50 years who thought originally about how football should be played.
He definitely played for Chesham Utd although I don’t believe they qualified for the World Cup during his time there. He played, with some success in the US, towards the end of his career.
Indeed he did (in a manner of speaking). He played for Team America v. England in the USA Bicentennial Cup tournament in 1976, along with Keith Eddy. Scully scored their goal in a 1-3 reverse. Amazingly the Team America also included Bobby Moore, Giorgio Chinaglia and Pele. Even more amazingly, Ken Furphy was their manager! To continue the Watford connection, Peter Taylor (erstwhile Youth Coach) played for England as a sub. I do not believe that caps were awarded for that match.
Maybe time for a historical reappraisal. Admittedly, West Ham won the WC in 66 but it seems we won it repeatedly in the 1970s. In this light, we can now see the GT period as a slow but steady reversion to the mean.
Indeed he did.. and scored. But.. It was an unofficial international. He was Scottish.. and most importantly for the point i was making, he wasn't a Watford player at the time having moved to Tampa Bay Rowdies several months earlier.
Complete rubbish. Seem the hole film and there was barely any football in it. Acting was a bit wooden as well.
