Anyone decent wants out, don't blame them one bit. I think some of our fans are bit naive to think Delefou was ever going to play Championship football, hope they aren't too disappointed when others leave and we end up losing to Wycombe 2-0 on the first day of the season.

Sorry Burnsy but this all seems slightly pathetic to me. How are his words painful? He's said plenty of nice things in the past about being at Watford, how it's suited him in this period of his career and I can't imagine he'd leave without continuing to feel the same way. But even with his injury the idea he'd stay to play in the Championship was always laughable. At best I suppose we may get a game or two out of him in some sort of marriage of convenience, given the transfer window is extended this year and it could benefit him to prove his fitness. But I think it's more likely he'll be gone even before then.

And without knowing what's in his contract it's naive to say because it still has time to run that's the end of the story. I think he's one of the most likely candidates in our squad for a relegation release clause, probably one that fixes the fee and allows him/his agent to actively find a suitor prepared to trigger it. Even if that's not true I don't see anything wrong in what he's said.

It's kind of interesting as well you jump into assuming he wants to leave because of some kind of treachery on Pozzo's part. He wants to leave because he's far too good for the Championship. That's the real end of the story.

  3. I don’t have a problem with him talking to the media about wanting out, I just don’t expect him to then be given any game time; same for Doucs and Welbeck and if Deeney wants out him too. Coaching effort and pre season game time must be for the players staying and our young prospects. These guys can train away from the first team.

Although I am willing to believe some of the "marquee" signings WERE given indications of squad progression that just has not happened...hence relegation.

That's not something that happens though, is it? They'll try and knock the price down because we're in the Championship, and it was always as clear as day that Deulofeu, of all people, would never countenance the idea of playing there, particularly at this stage in his career.

Hope we manage to replace his three goal haul, his plentiful "ooh, so close but it's wide again" moments and terrible free kicks.

We're no different from any other relegated club. We've gone down and now our best players are looking for moves, you've got to be seriously naive if you didn't think this would happen. There's not a lot the club can do, these days if a player wants to leave then he eventually gets his way.

I've made this point in the Doucouré thread, but as mentioned there the two objectives that the club has this window is to build a squad capable enough of gaining promotion from the Championship whilst filling a c.£50m revenue hole.

Like Doucouré, Deulofeu is one of our most expensive assets and we don't need a player of his quality to gain promotion. Sure in an ideal world you wouldn't say no (when he turns it on he's a fantastic player), but there are cheaper alternatives that will be good enough for what we need. What's more, even if he stayed until January as some are suggesting I'm not sure that helps us that much. Championship football is probably not suited to him and he'll be on his way back from injury so we'll unlikely see him at his best and will still be paying his wages for the privilege.

As with Doucouré, on balance I'd rather see him go for c.£20m without a nasty taste in the mouth, helping to plug the revenue gap and allowing us to keep Sarr. I think we'd probably need a replacement 10 to share duties with Cleverley in the middle, but they'd be fitter, more affordable, and motivated than clinging on to Geri.

    Geri will go.

    But when and how much?

I'm still not convinced he'll be fit enough to get sold before the end of the window.

I don't see there being any issue in raising the £50m shortfall. But as all gardeners know with pruning, you cannot cut too deep or else the plant will die.

This is where Watford are right now.

Doucoure £30m plus add-ons appears to be the range we're looking to sell at, and with plenty of clubs interested I think we'll get that.
Pererya £15m should be easily achievable, especially if we sell to Udinese.
Welbeck £5.5m so with just these three, we've already raised over £50m.
Pussetto £7m going back to Udinese for the same money we got him for.

There will be savings on salary for these players too, along with Gomes, Mariappa and Gomes. That will be at least another £10m per year.

That's raises £57.5m which covers the EPL shortfall. We do not NEED to sell anyone else, but of course more will probably go.

We know Geri wants out, but I just cannot see the club selling him right now. No one will pay the money Watford are likely to want for him, while his injury is still an issue. Without the injury we could probably get around £30m, but with it, it would be a lot less. I think the club will see loaning him out for this season as the best option. He still has 3 years on his contract, so Watford will still have an asset if we go up or sell him next season if he proves he's recovered from injury.

Suarez and that shock Tweet from his agent, did sound like he had something already sorted out. If that's the case I think we'll lose a very good player for only £15-20m which will be a bit of a disaster.

Anyway, suppose he does stay, we'll still raise even more funds from selling Kiko, Janmaat....maybe Masina. Probably get around £10-12m for those three.

So we don't need to sell Sarr at all, but if £50m is offered I think Watford will find that hard to turn down.

The running total if we do sell all these players would be around £130m, and that's without including selling Geri or Suarez.

That's a massive sum of money, but you would have to reinvest for sure. You'd need another central defender, backup keeper, right sided winger, midfielder and probably other full back options. With regards to a striker, we still have some hope Cucho can come in January.

To be fair he probably would have still been at Watford if he had a slower recovery, but it seems like he has recovered quickly.

I think some of the public comments like Geri's (albeit he didn't play a part) sums up some of the half arsed efforts post restart. Most of these lot had mentally already left and couldn't care. To me highlights the issues within the club.

On the contray you have Sarr, who by all accounts sounds like he wants to play at the top level, but shows some respect to the contract he has and doesn't seem to be actively pushing for a move.

Not completely convinced about that. I got the impression he was enjoying the big fish in a small pond thing and with his injury on top I reckon he'd have stayed for one more PL season.

Possibly, but it would certainly have been a tense summer, and if any semi glamorous side in italy or spain showed an interest he'd have been off I reckon.

But it is mind boggling to think that some people thought he'd play with us in the Championship.

Our fans never fail to show just how detached from reality they are. Truly, the gift that keeps on giving. The herpes of the fan-world if you like.

The problem for him could be will someone take the risk of signing him before he is fully recovered from his current serious injury, personally I don't think they would. I agree that he would probably not choose to play in the Championship, but he might just have to if he is not fully fit before the window closes in October.

Therefore, I think there is every possibility that we will see him in a WFC shirt this season at least until January. Furthermore I fully expect he will be playing out of his skin during that period in order to attract the attention of perspective buyers.

I hope for his sake and ours that he does indeed get back to his best after this injury, and I will wish him well if he still wants to move on in January. However, if we are flying high, then maybe, just maybe, he might decide he wants to stay with us after all, and if he does we should offer him the very best new deal we possibly afford to keep him here.

Having said that, I would imagine he would still be likely to move on in January, but hopefully by then he may well have given us great momentum towards bouncing back to the PL.

Good luck to him whatever happens, and he will always be welcome back at WFC as far as I'm concerned, even if he ultimately decides his future is to be elsewhere.

I never believed he would play for us in the Championship unless his lack of fitness dictates as such.

I just don’t like it when players give interviews saying they are leaving or trying to. That’s your agents job. I know it’s modern football so fans should just be used to it by now - I still don’t think that’s right though and it’s disrespectful in my opinion.

Atzili definitely looks a good player but he just got sacked by Maccabi Tel Aviv due to an (seemingly true, judging by his dismissal) allegation of statutory rape. Pro: could be available on a free. Con: probably a bad egg, not the sort you want around a ‘family club’ and would be a PR disaster.

If we sold him the dream of being the 'best of the rest' while having a defence of Dawson, Cathcart and Kabasele, then sure, even if we stayed up, he'd have been well within his rights to question the whole point of us signing him

I highly doubt he was mis-sold anything. He had been on loan with us before we signed him permanently so had opportunity to understand the clubs background, the calibre of player on the books and the environment in which he was to be working.

So we dont owe him anything but neither does he owe us. He contributed significantly to our success in 2018/19 and was unfortunate with injury that contributed to the clubs collective failure last year.

I see a player who was always talented and ambitious (part of the reason we bought him in the first place) ready to move on, and be moved on by a club who are no longer in a position where it would be mutually beneficial if he stays.

Good luck to him wherever he goes, I just don't want to see him in the Prem playing against us at any point in the future

Got to be honest not sure why anybody wants to buy our players, for a large part of last season we looked crap , which means our players are either crap or were not trying - neither of which is an attractive prospect for somebody wanting to spend £10+m. I guess at a push Welbs and Gerry were injured , but it’s not like Gerry was a sole ray of light before his injury. I like Gerry and would like him to stay but not convinced he is the star he thinks he is.

the only two players I would be trying to poach from our squad are Hughes and Sarr

I like Gerry and as I said would rather he stayed, but I’m not convinced he was as good as the year before, however that could have been down to the number of coaches we had and what he was being told to do.

it is interesting though that he isn’t exactly being targeted by other prem teams and that the main interest is him going abroad,

Doesn't seem to be much interest in him at all (apart from that article saying Valencia wanted him which is probably ********), which is kind of understandable given his injury, if he were fit and we went down (which more than likely wouldn't have happened), there'd have been clubs queuing up for him. Seems to be mainly him asking other clubs to take him on more than anything at the moment

He'll go for a knock down price with large sell ons and/or appearance bonuses. 10m now and if he plays 50 games for you another 10m. If you sell him before he plays 50 games 50% sell on.

He goes, fair price, no risk for buying club.
