  1. The The / Matt Johnson were criminally undervalued.

First single: Laurel and Hardy's "On the Trail of the Lonesome Pine" bought from Rumbelows.
    First Album: Madness "Absolutely"
Last Album: Loop "Edizione Limitata Di 1000 Copie" 'official bootleg' of live mixes taken directly from the desk during an unspecified European tour.
Favourite Album: The Prodigy "Fat of the Land" (judging by the number of times it's been played.
Most Embarrassing: The Ting Tings "We Started Nothing" bought after watching their extraordinary live performance of "That's Not My Name" on some BBC4 "History of Manchester Music...." - Christ they're shyte.
Best Live: Choice of The Beatnigs (Michael Franti's forerunner to "The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy" and "Spearhead") - one of the most striking 2hr 'art' performances I've ever seen.

and Billy Bragg - just how much presence can a bloke and a guitar have?
Worst Live: Both are brilliant studio bands - New Order and the really ******* boring REM (Document Tour - really dull; Orange Tour, when they became massive, incredible pretentious dull ***** and whatever that shyte was at MK Bowl: a concert for building surveyors and estate agents to show how cool they are.
Last Live: The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - exceptionally accomplished musicians who really delivered a memorable show.

Matt Johnson is a pretentious **** of the highest order but **** me can he write, produce and perform good music.

  4. Worst live - the Pogues (albeit a long time ago) - so concentrated on actually being able to play their instruments, it was like watching waxworks.

Best live - came across a Montreal band called Bodh'aktan at a festival of Acadia in Normandy - everything the Pogues should have been.

Joe Dolce! I hold you entirely at fault for the simply excellent Vienna from topping the charts. Hang your head in shame.

You must have been unlucky. New Order were fantastic live when I saw them last summer (and my expectations were quite low given how much I love their studio albums).

Agree about the Bard of Barking. I think I've seen him live at least five times, and he has never disappointed (even though I am less keen on his more recent material).

Also unlucky. Pogues were great when I saw them live (around 90/91, I think?). Crowd was a bit rowdy, mind!

Absolutely. Uncertain smile and This is the day were brilliant pop songs. Infected was a more bitter creative sound.

Possibly you saw them without Hookey doing his 'rock-god' preening and prancing. Perhaps I was unlucky with the 3 times I saw them with their shyte sound system, w&nk vocals and Hookey prancing like a t1t.

    Yes, sans Hookey.

Certainly no problem with the sonnd system, light show was great and I think Bernard/Barney's voice has matured with age.

  12. Les Gar*ons BĂȘastie.

Edit - apparently the draconian swear filter means you can't post a 'c' with a cedilla.

  13. The Recluse

They were at Milton Keynes for two days I think and I was disappointed not to get tickets for the day I didn't go to because Tanya Donelly or Kristin Hirsch were one of the supporting acts. I had to make do with some little known band called Radiohead. Whatever happened to them? Cast played as well. Terrible.

Taking the blame for that sits very easily with me. I did not like that song one bit.

  15. Vienna era Ultravox a pale shadow of John Foxx Ultravox!. (Exclamation mark part of name).

"Slow motion" was good but little else.
They were more indie but there's a reason that they had no commercial success with Foxx and he had little solo success, even when he tried to go commercial with stuff like Europe after the rain (which I liked).

An album you can recommend? I can have a listen while I relax in the bath.

  18. First Album (ultravox!). By no means all tracks have stood the test of time, but given this was 1977 and loosely part of punk/new wave, pretty innovative. Saw them a few times at a very sweaty Marquee on Wardour St.

I think his solo success was hampered by his biggest hit 'Underpass' sounding like 'Underpants'. One hit wonder novelty act.

How was he a 'novelty act'?

  22. Maninblack

He wasn't. Sorry, my obtuse humour, claiming he was seen as a novelty act after a song called 'Underpants'. It was amusing in my mind at the time.

First: World in motion single. I remember getting my dad to sign up for the Britannia Music Club, where you would pay a monthly fee and get send one of those new weird CDs, I certainly convinced my dad to choose some of my liking, so perhaps Bad by Jackson. First album I actually brought (Ourprice in St Albans) was Parklife by Blur
Latest: Sorry just stream nowadays, probably last Prodigy one
Favourite: Stone Roses by Stone Roses
Embarassing: Robbie Williams first one with that bloody Angels song on it. I think it was more of an album to impress a girl at that time
First Proper Live Gig: Got my dad to take me to Dire Straits at Woburn, first with mates was Oasis at Knebworth
