Didn't realise he'd refused to sign a new contract and left SW this summer. Sure I'd have him on a free. 40 goals in 128 is a decent haul. I don't think we should be cruel this time, if we're promoted we must take him with us.

Why has he played so little for Wednesday lately? Just 823 minutes last season and the equivalent of 16 games the season before that. Not the best omen. His goal and assist rate has remained fairly decent when called upon, but at 30 I can't imagine we'd take him on any kind of long-term deal. He'd be a useful option to have coming off the bench given we currently seem pretty light on wingers, but would he be willing to re-join us only on a 1+1 year deal?
I know we’ve been relegated and have to lower our aims with transfer targets - but we do seem to be setting the bar lower than needed in my opinion if we are to believe some of what we read. Players from Udinese who have played at a level generally the same or lower than the Championship - and not stood out. And Forestieri who although loved, couldn’t buy a game last time we shipped him out. None of these signings are going to make those thinking about leaving to take notice and entice them to stay. Ismailia Sarr will most likely be thinking about who he could be playing with and for elsewhere when the alternative is the names we are linked so far - we have to make it enticing somehow for them to stay. These names are just making me think how vital it is that we hold on to the vast majority of our squad.
Ishmail Sarr can think all he likes. If no one comes up with the wonga the club want for him he's going nowhere and he'll just have to get his head down and help get us promoted.
I know that. But you’d think the club will also be trying to appease and appeal to those in doubt anyway. We want our players happy rather than looking at the exit door every window trying to find a way out.
This has been my fear, is that the club underestimate the Championship and decide we don't need all our star players. Yes, I know some will have to go, but not all. Sell too many, and those on the fence will also jump ship of they can. It's an achievement to have convinced Suarez and Estupinan to stay. It's an achievement to retain Foster and Hughes.......and it's amazing if we keep Sarr. That's a massive coup for us.....but we need more than that...IMO. We need Welbeck or Deulofeu to remain until at least January. We need to keep either Doucoure or Capoue (hopefully Capoue). If we get that, I'd be confident. If we flood our team with too many squad players or Udinese rejects I'm not so sure.

As discussed in many other threads, the most important thing is we still have a club in 3 years if we don't go up. Not that we don't sell our stars and hope we survive in 3 years. I don't think they underestimate the champ, I think they just accept they have to get some cash through the door and reduce our cost base.
I disagree. This season is not the one to strip it right back. There is a balance, and we cannot go too far with the pruning.
There’s obviously still time for the picture to become clearer and I suspect it will - but if it doesn’t, then we urgently will need to sort out the scouting at the club. It’s just coming across as lazy scouting at this point - in my opinion anyway.

Exactly. A balance. Not strip it right back. But sell some of the better players who want to go and reduce the debt that will climb steeply, to improve the chances of surviving when the parachute money stops.
We are in agreement until the last few words. We cannot think of when the parachute payments stop at this stage. We have to be brave and back ourselves to be promoted. We have to run this season on a higher than usual budget for one season. This is not putting anything at risk, but it is being ambitious and positive. This is only way to get promoted. If we do not take this opportunity, I think it will take us years before we can be in a position to go up again.
Yes of course. But it frustrates me that some seem to think we can keep all our best players and still act prudently. We need to reduce costs and make some sales to bridge some of the cash lost. We can't just sell Doucs for £20m and consider it job done.
You don't seem very good with numbers. We cannot lose £70m in one season and survive if we don't go back up. If we go back up our costs quickly match our revenues, there's no big spare surplus to cover that loss. Only 1 in 5 finish in the top 2 after relegation anyway.
Again, I haven’t read anything from anyone that says ‘just selling Doucoure’ is enough. Doucoure, Pussetto, Pereyra, Welbeck/Deeney/Gray (1 or 2 of...) have generally been added to the discussion by all.

Get him in. While we're at it, bring back Anya, Vydra, Behrami, Watson, Hogg and every other fan legend for the last 15 years. We need at least one legendary whipping boy too. Jurado is probably available - unless we want to just opt for Success.
******* hell, I loved Forestieri despite, and possibly because of his histrionics, but he's past it and injury-prone now. I'd unironically have Vydra back in a flash (not that it's gonna happen lol), but this Forestieri is not the kind of player who's gonna get us to where we want to be this season
