FA Cup attitudes

Years ago I used to love the FA Cup and 3rd round day (and it was only ONE day) was the most exciting of the season. These days it's so sad to see how far it has fallen in the eyes of clubs and their fans. As we come to that stage of this season, here's my take on how clubs at different levels regard the Cup today.

Non-league clubs: Still love everything about the Cup, right from the earliest round. Dream of just playing a league club in Round 1 and seeing themselves for 20 seconds on Match of the Day.

League 2 clubs: Desperate for cash to stay in existence, so welcome the extra fixtures. Would love to get as far as Round 3 and play somebody huge, like Hull or Forest.

League 1 clubs: Take it or leave it attitude to the Cup. Would relish a 'run' if it materialised and enjoy the spotlight of being the last of the 'minnows' left in by about Round 5.

No-hope Championship clubs: (e.g. Burton, Barnsley) See League 1.

Big Championship clubs in trouble: (e.g. Birmingham, Sunderland) Desperate to avoid another relegation, so are not going to risk anything for 5 minutes of Cup 'glory'.

Large Majority of Championship clubs: Can't be bothered with the Cup because all they're thinking about is slogging through all those games and scrambling into the play-offs. Would enjoy a day out at one of the big boys, though.

Most Premier League clubs: Would love to win it and think they have a chance in theory but daren't really have a go at it because it might endanger their place at the PL trough. Also frightened of a Europa League/relegation battle combination next season.

Top 6 clubs: Don't give a stuff about the Cup because it gets in the way of the important competitions (Premier/Champions League). But if their reserve team gets them to the semis, then they'll have a go at winning it despite hating the idea of being in the Europa League.

I'll be at Vicarage Road tomorrow and will try and get to whatever further games we play in the competition. Hope you all can make it. You never know...

The FA Cup needs somebody other than the FA.

Everyone will play their reserves till about the 5th round but of course the top 6 2nd string are much stronger than anyone else's so will get through despite as WWTW says not really fancying it.

Then they will all care about it come the 6th round just incase its a chance to win something in an average season - just look at Arsenal in 3 of the 4 last seasons.

Without luck or a good draw like we had 2 years cannot see many sides outside of the top 6 getting to the semis because they won't put the effort in.

In fact can see the likes of Stoke/Swansea losing tomorrow...

No Non-league sides left either so not really a chance of a truly romantic story.

I'd love it if we took it seriously enough and actually went on and won it. As has been pointed out many times on here, a cup win is the only thing the scummers up the road still have over us.

But premier league survival due to the insane money in the division now comes at the expense of over committing resources to have a proper go at winning one of the other pieces of silverware up for grabs.

Wigan won it in 2013 - the season they were relegated - and haven't been seen since. And despite a few teams from the lower divison getting to the final - nobody has won it outside of the top division since West Ham in 1980. Therefore - statistically our best chance of winning it will come whilst we are a premier league side. But the effort to stay in this league makes that nigh on impossible for most teams.

Since Everton's win 23 years ago - only Portsmouth and Wigan have managed to win it other than Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. And both Portsmouth and Wigan have since sunk without trace.

Hmm..Eddie Howe never seems to bother with the cup does he?

Last thing he probably wanted was a replay !!

    Will Hughss be sacked now..

    Winning is good.
Anyone who competes wants to win.
    Winning breeds confidence and belief.
Who on earth would sacrifice such an opportunity?

And fully deserved, too. Just as well they didn’t play like that on Saturday.

I rather miss the times when it was us playing like that. They may still get stuffed but they have already got something to be proud of.

Annoys me when people like the bloke on the BBC live text thing say Brizzle are giving them a tougher game than most PL sides this season. Pep picked a weaker team than his PL lineup and no doubt their players started thinking it would be a walkover.

Well MC won with a late goal which has happened a few times in recent weeks.

Like Palace showed you can give them a game if your organised and solid at the back.

UEA is right too - probably was some complacent home players .

From what I saw, BC pressed like Barca on amphetimines.

With drilling, energy & desire, any team can do that.

The only top 6 team which do not do it are *rse which is why it is tending towards a top 5.

Spurs doing a very Spurs thing - losing to a 4th tier side.

Arsenal get loads of stick but at least they have won stuff in the last few years !

Am expecting them to get something though.

    EDIT: There is always Kane!

As a 4th tier side, that Spurs goal was pretty bitter sweet for Newport.

Disappointing that they could have beaten Spurs and progressed in the cup.

But had they won they may have lost to Wigan in the next round.

Only drew but now get a replay AT Wembley plus an absolute shedload of money for the replay, especially if it gets on tv which is very possible.

The draw was almost undoubtedly a much better result than a win for both the fans and the club.

So you think Newport fans would prefer an evening trip to a half-empty Wembley for a probable heavy defeat rather than the memory of a glorious win over a ‘top six’ team and progression to the last 16 of the cup to play who knows who next? You have no soul.

I understand your point fellow Bassett. However on my occasional flicks to see SS it is amusing how they have no reporters at the cup games and consequently treat the games as slightly less important than Chester v Eastleigh!
Bias doesn't come close,it's almost as if Sky are airbrushing the FA Cup from view.
