Yeah ofc you're a medic. Stupid question. I thought all final years across the country have found out whether they're a doctor or not? That's certainly the case for the final years at Imperial-they're on their electives. Yeah my exams pale into insignificance compared to yours. Hopefully the results work out well for you

I think they've all done their exams, not everyone knows their results yet. I know Southampton are waiting on theirs too. Our electives were after fourth year, seems a distant memory but I wish I was back on it! Earlier years exams were hard though, a lot more rote learning and also that's when they try and shift you out of school. I'm sure you'll be fine - if you need a hand with anything give us a shout.

Jesus, that must have been very borderline then in terms of your overall average. Is it worth appealing two of your modules that have chance of bumping up the average?

I kind of messed up on one of my theory modules, which is essay based, not my strong point, getting 53

For writing the TV Drama I got 60 for the 70% part of the module, with the group work being 30%, which we got 58

For short film, I got 64 for my role as director, which is 40% (I think I could've done a lot better so quite happy to get a decent grade) then the overall film presentation we got 56 which is 60% of the module.

For what it's worth I got 70 for my Multi Camera Live Events module, which could've been almost at 80 if it wasn't for a weak rushed second submission

    Are you studying an LLB?

I agree by the way, so many areas of law it's impossible to learn the finer details in such a short time. I guess that's what the training contract and the LPC is for.

I was talking with the SRA a few months back and they're looking at making the LLBs specific as opposed to generic. Some areas of law can overlap (in criminal law it's useful to have some knowledge on tort, family and with the increasing use in defences, human rights), but at least you could then go to uni and study the area you're wishing to dedicate a career to and be better equipped when you leave.

Having said that you can already study some areas of law ALMOST individually, but even then you're made to choose some other areas of law as modules, just not as many.

Appeal the individual ones? Or the group ones?

Tbh it makes no difference for this year as a whole, my first semester was once again dragged down by one **** module, where my individual work for mid 60s where as the group work was a horrible 49

I'm in my final year of a Law degree, just did pretty badly on my last exam. Potentially failed it.

Because there's no reassessment in final year, I've got no idea what that means in terms of not getting enough credits.

My other marks this year have been 57, 60, 68, 70 so surely I'd be given some margin for error?

  13. Orny Arry

    Orny Arry Guest

I'm not sure without knowing how your uni calculates the assessments, but I would consider looking at your module marks from the last three months (I think you have twelve weeks to appeal) and see if there's two assessments that by an extra one or two per cent will take your average up. I don't know how far below you are into the 2:2 classification but if it's literally borderline then I would definitely go for it. Any issues working out your mark, drop me a PM mate.

  14. Orny Arry

    Orny Arry Guest

How does your uni calculate your marks? Year two and three, year two OR three alone or all three years?

Based on those marks you'll be fine. Providing you turned up to that exam you think you failed you'll get some sort of mark and all it'll do is drop your average.

The same occurred with those that failed exams at my uni. I'm sure a particular mate assumed he could have re-sit his final exams and he soon found out after that he couldn't. He still got a 2:2 and I can tell you now his marks throughout the year were not as good as yours. I think you'll be fine - depending on how they calculate, you've got a minimum 2:2, potentially a 2:1. You may get lucky and that exam meant nothing. Some uni's take a 40/60% split between second and third year, meaning it'll only consider your top 60% of marks in year three.

It's 50/50 second and third year. I'm sure it'll be fine because my marks this year are an improvement on second year anyway.

Got my results today, got a 2.1 but was just 1.7% off a first class honours overall.... *sigh*, so I think I'm going to pay €240 to get 4 exams rechecked to see if i can be brought up some percent (need to come up 14% across any 4 exams to make the 1.7% overall). Got a first class honours in my thesis which is lovely!

That's 1.7% over 12 modules i.e. just my final year subjects, not throughout the whole degree! Equates to 14 normal percentage if that makes sense (eg. if i go from a 60 to a 74 in just one exam I'll get a first overall). There's one exam where I definitely feel I did significantly better than the grade I got so will defo be getting that looked at. My thesis supervisor lectured 2 other modules so might ring him and see what he thinks. €60 per module to get remarked ain't cheap, but just got a job with Aer Lingus so won't be letting money get in the way for once.

Just that it seems so close... almost took the fun out of getting a 2.1 by being that marginal!

Yeah I understand how it works mate, hope you get the result you want from it. I'm just saying that increasing a mark for one module by that amount or several marks by smaller amounts is still an awful lot. If your uni rounds up the mark then it's worth doing; for example, if you get 69.6% it'll be rounded up to a 70, so you get a first.

Having said that, those I know who got a first from various uni's in various courses didn't seem to do much to their career. A degree is a degree - although, granted, a first does look better, but many employers will see you got a degree and that'll be enough. I got a 2:1 and those who got a first have been forced into other careers.

True that, have no idea if the college rounds up or what the story is on that front. There's also the possibility that I can go down marks although I doubt that will happen.

I know I'm not delusional as there were 2 exams I knew i did well in, one I ended up getting 87 in, and the finance which turns out I only got 61 so a remark could see me jump quite a bit, who knows!

Best of luck to all waiting on results!

Pretty sure at herts if you get 69% you can arrange a consultation with someone to pleade your case for a first and if they agree they can bump it up to 70%, I thought that was common place at most uni's so may be worth checking out?

  29. WatfordÉire

    WatfordÉire Squad Player

Not sure if thats the same policy over here, never heard of that happening. To correct from earlier, technically I'm on 68.8% so its only 1.2% thats needs bringing up or maybe only 1% if its rounded up!

70% for a first? What Uni & course is this?

My degree course had 20 people left at the end of year 4 a drop out rate of 33%

    Final results
    2x 1sts
    4x 2:1
    2x 2:2
    4x 3
    4x Pass
    4x Fail

I achieved a 2:2 with 71%. Anyone that had to resit an exam in the 4 years lost their Honours.

The structure in pass marks are not related to the intensity of a course.

The course I'm due to start in October is structured differently to what I'm used to, whereby a first is awarded from 80% and up, with a fail of anything less than 50%. Doesn't mean the course itself is any harder, or the level of assessment is more dogmatic.

Re; the Honours bit you mentioned, I presume this is standard?

  32. simms

The maximum it's possible to get in my course was 80%. The top 20% is saved for masters and phds I think. Above 75% and it's a publishable piece.

You can get a 1st with 68% at my uni if in at least 1/2 the modules you do you score above 70. I'm now pretty confident I got a 2:1 with 60%.
