Actually scored a goal v Southampton I think.

I read in one of the Watford related books came on v then for 6 seconds once as a debut and never played again!

And from the same game, I give you Doug Allder who also only played for us once.

he was possibly the slowest player ever to play for us - and that is up against some pretty stiff competition

You could say the same thing about Dave Woodfield, our record buy at the time £27,500 got about 70 minutes out of him (could have been less) got a career ending injury, came back after many months, completely broken, made coach (as we had to keep paying him)

I think the fight was with Jamie Hand!

Gary Fisken. Like Jamie Hand, was seen as the big breakthrough from the youth team and got decent game time (under Vialli). Seemed to contribute nothing and disappeared from view. Played a few games for Swansea and that was that.....

And obviously left back Jure Travner, who I got far too excited about thanks to YouTube before he never played for us and got sold to St Mirren.

Yes! Pretty sure he played really well in a 3-0 home win (want to say Tranmere) during an otherwise terrible season and then promptly vanished.

Darren Caskey and Danny Hill were loan players in the mid 90s.

    Both from Spurs.

    Caskey became a Reading legend.

Boothroyd had a whole load of odd signings - most listed here!

Remember Juinor who signed but was never allowed to play due to illegal documents?!

Willie played in midfield but was pretty versatile. Ended up playing for Boro and Celtic amongst others.

Great one here, does anybody remember any of Carlton Palmer’s 5 appearances in 2000/01?
I know he was a favourite of GT but he didn’t exactly set The Vic alight!

Danny Rose and Andros Townsend both of who had very undistinguished loan periods with us but both played for England!

If we’re going down the England route can we add Harry Kane (trials as a kid)
    Jadon Sancho (youth)
Raheem Sterling (used to kick a ball about in Cassiobury Park as a kid)
Along with loanees Rose and Townsend it looks like half the England team owe it to what they learnt at Watford??

It was Lars Melvang. Scored on his debut vs Brentford (?) in GTs promotion season from Div 1 and that was pretty much that.

According to the Season Review - he was only on trial (maybe meant loan?)

    Perhaps back up for Gibbs's..

Another short term careee here was Dean Yates - actually scored in the early 98/99 season but got injured.

    Johan Gudmansson too.

BTW talking of ex England players as kids here don't forget Ashley Young and David James.

Tony Currie was a phenomenal player. He joined Watford Juniors when he was released from Chelsea. He made his first team debut the following season (1967-8) and, as a 17 year old midfield player, scored 6 goals (including a hat-trick) in his first four games for Watford in the old Third Division (now Division 1). He scored a second hat-trick in his ninth game in a 7-1 win against Grimsby (for whom Graham Taylor was playing).

Jim Bonser (Watford Chairman) told Ken Furphy (the manager) that he had to choose between selling Stewart Scullion or Tony Currie to Sheffield Utd., who were in the old Division 1 (now Premier League). Furphy decided to sell Tony Currie (after only 18 games for Watford) who was rumoured to have had an attitude problem, although I do not know whether this rumour was true. Keith Eddy (Watford captain at the time) said afterwards that he told Furphy that the sale was a mistake because Currie was such an exceptional young talent. Currie had a great career at Sheffield Utd. (where Ken Furphy later became his manager) and at Leeds Utd. He also made 17 appearances and scored 3 goals for the England national side.
