Kinda sums up the season when with two games to go, the only saving thing us from the drop COULD be goal difference. I accept chances are low and realistically it looks like there'll be 3/4 points separating us and 18th place which is pretty crap anyhow but the fact it's still a possibility that we could just stay up by goal difference alone is quite poor really.

Theres two ways it could go on Monday. They could field a best eleven, running out comfortable winners - or they could field a second string to give people a game and run out comfortable winners.

You have no right to tell me or any other members on here to get a grip. If you read my post properly it would help.

Why refer to 1981 as in "worst since 1981"? Wasn't that a good season? Finished 9th and QF of the league cup. If you mean 81-82. Well that was promotion to the top flight.

But that ignores the fact that as head coach he isn't responsible for building the squad. And his first transfer window would, rightly, have been spent concentrating on assessing what he was given rather than immediately eyeing up replacements.

Best wishes to you and yours.

I really am unsure of the direction Gino will select.

In Walt's defence, the injuries especially to the centre halves and creative duo have been constant and we seem cursed. The team of late, have also applied themselves to the level we would all consider as a minimum requirement, after the debacle on Humberside. If I am to play Devil's Advocate, I might suggest Walt has, correctly or incorrectly, decided that without Pereyra and Zarate his preferred system has to be shelved and we have targeted the bottom third matches to win/gain a point. This clearly failed at Hull and Selhurst it's fair to say!

The case against him does appear to be growing,a pragmatic not to say attritional style,a persistence with 352 when it seems to be a hinderance to the team, the omission of certain players and the inclusion of others even when logic suggests they are dropped/rotated/burnt at the stake ( delete as appropriate!) Add to this his dour, even a mother would struggle to like, personality and most fans would rather boil themselves alive than retain his services.

Are the Walt out brigade being just? Who amongst us thought we would gain points or a point in our last 6 games? I was pessimistic although clinging to the hope that we may spring a Man Utd or Arsenal performance. As hard as it is to accept,Hull apart, the opposition are a level, possibly 2 levels above us at present. No amount of fist clenching, gnashing of teeth or gurning,Andy Murray style, will compensate for lack of quality.

All of the above we are reasonably sure to be true but what we don't know is what do the squad really believe, what is smoke and mirrors and what is fact?

Team spirit is a myth. On some of the most successful tennis teams I've played in,there were certain players we could not abide, but we rubbed along fine when we were winning. When the chips were down, fractures appeared and human nature kicked in and others were blamed for the decline.

    What's the answer?

Time will tell as ever but it's probably Gino's hardest call to date, as others have perished under his sword who were much more likeable and probably more successful.

Let's hope he gets it right!

Sorry for the 3 volume novel!

    COYH!

So, you're saying that Deeney chose to announce his intention to leave at the end of the season to some random bloke in the crowd? Interesting

Ok well he said it was to a few of them as they shook hands. If anyone was there last night the radio said he jumped into the crowd. Not to confront as we might have heard more of it but to show his appreciation

Maybe my mate heard what he wanted to hear but we know TD was mighty fed up at palace when he went to go over and got dogs abuse so to jump into the crowd after (another) defeat ??

Deeney originally walked over to applaud the fans, as he always does - he also turned around and called over all the players who were keeping their distance. When he went to hand his shirt to somebody in the disabled section down the front some bloke about 5 to my left lost the plot, started hurling abuse at Troy from about 5m away (all other fans I could see were applauding a bit). Deeney then put his hand to his ear, as if to get the guy to say it again, which he did... So Deeney stepped over the barrier to have a word. The guy's mate (who had been trying to diffuse the whole time) got in between them, put his around around Troy and said it's not worth it mate - Troy then walked away and shook hands and applauded the rest of the fans. That chap then got dragged away by the stewards.

Credit to the guy who got in between, because without him the situation could've got out of hand very quickly.

He said.. "my years following the Orns going back to 1981" So he wasnt picking out 1981 for any reason other than that's when he started going.

Actually the two seasons bridging 1981 have been my favourites following Watford. 80/81 because that's when i started going to games on my own and attending regular away matches. 81/82 season cause you could feel the big time was coming and before all the JCL top flight fans turned up :)

    You're not listening is why.

I think only this week several of us were again trying to point out to you the complete unlikelihood of us being relegated but you still wouldn't have it.

You can move the goal posts as much as you like, and I knew you would do this......and that's true probability.

I never said we would go down. I have always said we are not as safe as you and many others would have us believe......and this is still the case. So you're statement "we are as safe as houses" is not true and never has been. It's nothing to do with saying we are going down.

If we stay up, it doesn't mean you were right.....this is what you fail to grasp. It means we just about survived, which is far from being comfortably safe....or as you would have it, a mid-table side. Look at the table.....we are NOT mid-table. We are no better than Hull or Swansea. In fact right now, they are both better sides than us.

You completely dismissed the scenario's I put forward as not possible, yet they've pretty much have all happened exactly how I predicted it would.....especially the Watford stuff.

Yet you're still going strong in your opinion that you are 100% correct and I'm the one who's out of kilter. I bet if we actually did get relegated, you'd come back on here saying it didn't happen at all.

I think 7 is the longest.. 23/24 season. The Wfc archive gives details of scoreless away games but that includes 0-0's. The longest of which is 9 away games without scoring in 1972.

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure how accurate it is though. It has 8 clean sheets in a row as a record in 1949, but I remember we broke that with Kevin Miller and Alec Chamberlain in goal. I think we got 9 in a row, but that must have been in the late nineties.

So Deeney jumped in the crowd to put himself in a situation where fists could've been thrown? Very strange. Would be very sad to see him go and be successful elsewhere, wouldn't feel right.

Not sure about that. They are normally very accurate.

Are you possibly thinking of the 9 consecutive drawn away games in 96/97? Which i believe is a league record.

  27. hornetboy1

No it was definitely a record of clean sheets. I remember it well. We finally conceded a goal against Sunderland at home when we lost 0-1. It was in the 1994-95 season.

This was league games and FA Cup matches.

    Here are the results:-
    2 January 1995 Bristol City A 0-0
    7 January 1995 Scarborough A 0-0
    14 January 1995 Bolton Wanderers H 0-0
    R3R 17 January 1995 Scarborough H 2-0 Hessenthaler, Holdsworth
    R4 28 January 1995 Swindon Town H 1-0 Hessenthaler
1 February 1995 West Bromwich Albion A 1-0 Ramage (pen)
    4 February 1995 Southend United A 4-0 Bazeley (3), Ramage (pen)
    11 February 1995 Burnley H 2-0 Ramage, Bazeley
    R5 18 February 1995 Crystal Palace H 0-0
    21 February 1995 Sunderland H 0-1

The only scenario of yours I've dismissed is that we're not safe. I'm not sure I've commented on your 6 games or 9/12 thing. If anything losing 6 in a row without scoring and still staying up will simply show how safe we were/are and how irrational the worries are.

My aim for the season was 17th by any means possible. I've never pinned any value to being 'mid-table', particularly in a year where so few points separate 8th to 15th.

  29. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

How can the worries be irrational, when they are still valid? It's a bizarre statement.

If Swansea stay up will they consider themselves never in danger? Same applies to Hull, will they consider themselves never in danger? I think there's a real possibility that Swansea will finish above us now......so if they have been fighting against relegation all season but finish a point above us.....how can we be have never been in danger?

You and many others have a complacent attitude, which keeps your head buried in the sand, unaware of potential dangers. You've placed too much faith in the 40 point thing.

If only Deeney showed the same passion and fight on the pitch over the last 4 or 5 months......

The guy is really becoming boring now. Sh*t performance on the pitch, can't lead his side or encourage anyone around him, go over and milk the applause of the supporters and then slate his team mates and Manager in a press conference afterwards.

    Same every week now.
