For the first time since I was a teenager I've actually searched for a Eurovision song contest entry (Spain) as I heard on r4 that it was a rip-off of the greatest Euro song ever:

From my experience of rural Ukrainians might I suggest for the sake of authenticity: wood alcohol, anti-freeze or eau-de-cologne.

    Yes. That's what I thought.

Might look for a decent bottle of Bulgarian red instead.

For the first time since all the entries were chosen, Italy are no longer bookies favourites.

    Portugal are now ahead.

Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria are the top 3.

Belgium has recovered slightly and is now 4th.

    Settled for Romanian pinot noir.

Mrs Keighley and I are praying for a Portuguese victory. Or Italy. Even Bulgaria. Would make things a damn sight easier next year.

OK, I've listened to the finalists a few times now, narrowed it down a bit then come up with my betting guide, (which you shouldn't take seriously under any circumstances).

The favourites Portugal and Italy are definitely the type of songs that people will listen to once and like them, then never listen to them again. Portugals is now making my ears bleed but Italy's, though very cheesy, will be remembered for a dancing gorilla. Odds on both are stupidly low, avoid, (but I think Italy will be right up there at the end).

Of the others I really like Germany, Greece, Sweden and Moldova.
Germany: Great voice, a really good song and odds are ridiculously high.
Greece: Hot singer, video is excellent, song very good so how the h*ll are the odds on betfair 1000-1?
Sweden: When I played this on the PC everyone came over to see what the song was, plus every woman in my household thinks the singer is hot. This one is going to smash it.
Moldova: Just watch the video, worth it for that alone.

OK so that's my shortlist, so what about the running order, (out of 26 songs)?
Moldova 7th on, too early, rules them out.
Greece 15th on, not bad, will get them noticed.
    Germany 21st on, great position.
Sweden 24th on, 3rd from the end, couldn't be a better spot.

So for a decent bet to win the whole thing, put some money on Sweden at 55-1, (Betfair).
Top 10 finish for Germany is currently 12-1 (Betfair), (in fact Germany are 4.5 to finish dead last, so if you're in to laying against bets then that's the bet of the day for me).
Top 5 finish for Greece is 40-1, got to be worth a quid?

Otherwise Mrs Diamond is down Morrisons now getting some beer and popcorn for later, and I think I've just persuaded her to host a Eurovision party next year. Sorted.

Is the dancing gorilla Shabani? If so, will help Italy gain the female vote, at least among any Japanese tourists watching.

We did not do too badly - and that well known Europeans from Oz were in the top 5 for a while..

Portugal win which is a bit of surprise..

I quite liked the Belgium entry. Really surprised that it did not do better. I thought Portugals song was pants. Can't believe they got so many points.

I think Belgium was the best song, and that was reflected in the televoting.

But she was very nervous and lacked charisma live sadly (probably due to her age) and hence it only scored averagely in the jury voting.

Agreed, on the night that song came over so much better than listening to an mp3. Wouldn't have minded it winning at all.
I can't get the f***ing Italian song out of my head. Seriously doing my nut in today.

I agree with Malteser, I didn't think she sang it well at all.

I thought Bulgaria should have won, I thought his performance was excellent. I think Portugal won because of quirkiness. Funnily enough I thought it worked better as a duet (as performed after receiving the trophy) than as a solo.

Italy were the big losers on the night. They had been the very hot bookies favourite right up to the day before the contest. A month ago you could have got 20-1 on Portugal. But it all changed after the semi-final. For better or worse, it stood out, and caught the imagination. I believed it would either win by a mile or flop badly, but it wouldn't come 2nd, 3rd or 4th. It was a real all or nothing song. Ditto Ukraine last year. A 'fly in the ointment' entry. (I can't use the old fashioned 'woodpile' expression I want to use here!!)

Incidentally, it was the 2nd Eurovision in two years not won by the song that had been the hot favourite right up to the day before the contest (Russia last year too)

I've always seen Eurovision as the music version of the football Euros but we were only allowed to enter a non league team because it would be unfair to the competition to enter our best entries.

Just imagine our team from the 80s ..... Duran Duran , Human League, Kajagoogoo etc etc
