I think England will do well to qualify now. I don't think I've seen them play better, but still only drew against the weakest side in their group.

England were not clinical enough, and Sterling was so wasteful. Defending was poor, as virtually every ball into the box the opposition to get it first. This is a big problem England have. Hart nearly gifted Russia the win with a ridiculous run out of the box, then getting caught in possession. Could have been two goals conceded in the final 3 minutes and that would have been a disaster.

I think poor substitutions contributed to England's downfall. Sterling should have been taken off well before the 86th minute. Lallana ran out of ideas. Milner was not a good replacement for Sterling either.

Vardy and Rashford should have had a run out tonight.

England have improved from the World Cup, there's no doubt about that, but are not good enough to go very far in this tournament.

    Classic England.

I've been saying it for far too long now, but Roy Hodgson does not have a f**king clue and I cannot wait for the day he steps down/gets sacked.

No Vardy, Kane on set pieces, starting Sterling and Lallana and leaving them on for so long when they were clearly offering nothing, give me f**king strength.

We were good in the first half but we went off the boil in the second and got what we deserved for being so wasteful.

The commentators are so comically obviously so up Wayne Rooney's backside. Oooh he's marvellous, wonderful, those exquisite passes!

All I saw from him was losing possession over and over in dangerous positions, overhitting two out of three passes and punting it tamely into the keeper's arms from the edge of the area.

How James Milner got a seat on that plane and Townsend didn't is a travesty. Similarly with little Jackie 'puff puff' Wiltshire and someone like Deeney.

It's the same reason the vastly over-rated Bobby Robson waited 74 bloody minutes before bringing on John Barnes (for hopeless Trevor Steven) against Argentina in the 86 hand of god game.

If you play for a big club you're in like Lee Dixon.

Best player for us was Dier closely followed by Walker and Rooney.

    Negatives
Sterling, no pace, can't beat a player, can't cross, can't pass to a team mate!
Joe Hart, out of position and over rated.
Milner, some how got on the pitch!

Hodgson, a dinosaur who has no idea!

God help us against Wales, might as well book the ferry home now.
Even worse though why are the commentary team so far up hodgsons arse!

I'm sure these words will come back to haunt me but, in an attempt to view a disappointing start through rose tinted specs, let's remind ourselves that Spain drew their opening game in 2012. And didn't I see yesterday that England have never won their opening game in the Euros? So I'm not writing off our chances of progressing just yet (I'll do that on Thursday when we lose to Wales).

Re Rooney, sorry Clive but I agree with the commentators - I think he's fantastic for England in that position. But I will never, ever understand the logic of having your centre forward take corners.

Maybe it was the beer but I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of yesterday's game bar the equaliser. Thought we looked exciting going forward and tight at the back. That really was one of the best England performances I've seen since 96...

We were unlucky but play like that and we've got a strong chance of going far in this tournament

Its possible to qualify with a point, though not that likely. Talk of tournament over is highly premature.

Marshalling and security at the stadium, as well as the policing outside sounded a right shambles yesterday. You've got to wander how a country supposedly on high security alert allowed Russian fans to get into a stadium with flare guns, unbelievable if true.

Was at game and was a joke, the Russian mob fought like martial arts experts then normal thugs, pretty scarey to be honest, did not think it would be as bad as 1998 but was close, the French local seem up for trouble as well, still don't know what that Big Bang was?

I may be wrong but the last two time we drew the opening game 1-1 after leading we made the semi finals

Sounds terrible iamofwfc, must have been terrifying, looking at the pictures from this end and reading reports sounds like it was an organised contingent of Russian Ultra who were causing problems at the stadium and much of the trouble outside was by local French Ultras who were also causing trouble with Polish and Northern Ireland fans. Not sure what the bang at the end was but there are pictures on Twitter of a flare gun being shot from The Russian end of the stadium towards England fans at the final whistle.

I was wondering last night if you were there. I think the bang was a firework set off by Russian fans but may be wrong. Enjoy the tournament and hope you manage to stay away from any trouble. I know my lack of testosterone probably gives me a different take on these matters but, in my book, it's much more "manly" to walk (or run if necessary!) away from confrontation than to react to it. (Last sentence not aimed at you, iamofwfc, but general observation.)

Bet there are a few doubts about Russia 2018 now - well there were in the first place!

Sounds horrendous, stay safe. I was down in Bordeaux and the atmosphere couldn't have been any different from Marseille. Welsh were a bit excitable when Russia equalised but never any danger of violence. Welsh and the Slovakians were enjoying street parties together before and after the match as well.

Terrible events before and after the game.It sounds like a lack of awareness from French police, including apparently four different forces not communicating with each other. Combine that with organised Russian and French gangs intent on trouble,it sounds hideous.

iamofwfc and all out there, stay safe.

The game was just so frustrating yet again!

Sterling should have been off by about 50 minutes. Kane on corners? No Roy. Third time at least during Roy's tenure that we have conceded a goal like that- must stop the cross being delivered surely?

I felt Rooney played well and didn't understand his substitution, but all of Roy's subs were questionable at best,as others have stated.

I am not looking forward to Thursday.

French couldn't run a bath and Russia should not stage the 2018 World Cup for so many reasons.

It's probable - if we win the next two games the only way we won't come top is if Russia beat our goal difference.

If we come 2nd we're still through, and if we come third we still have 2/3 chance of getting through on highest points.

It was all okay until around the 60th minute.

I thought Rooney and Sterling had a decent first half, and Lallana surprised me too. It was a good start to the Euros.

Rooney was starting to tire, and we needed energy in the middle, and Wilshire was a good choice. But not bringing on Vardy was the stupid move. We had no pace to counter and became sitting ducks.

Long balling it to Vardy to run to the corner is a much more effective time wasting method than bringing on Milner, and would have been more clinical than Sterling after the hour.

A promising performance, but Roy needs to have the confidence to go for the jugular.

After last night's non performance, Sterling shouldn't play again this tournament. He was bloody awful.

Russia are one of the worst teams I've seen at this level. Absolutely hopeless.

Yes, we played decent, but it's difficult to take positives after failing to beat an injury-ravaged team who looked League One standard. We've gone from expecting too much of England to expecting too little. It was nowhere near the best tournament performance in 20 years as some are suggesting. We played better in the Italy and Uruguay games at the last World Cup and those were against decent sides.

Not really, it's 3 days worth of violence from both sides and blame lies with a number of different groups.

It's quite clear we aren't to blame for what happened inside the stadium but we were partly responsible for what happened outside of it. If there are problems against Wales (who are being praised for their behaviour against Slovakia) then we will have to face facts that a minority have again wrecked the occasion for the majority.

UEFA only have jurisdiction over trouble that happens inside the stadium so yes, England are in danger of being disqualified due to the actions of the Russian fans.

Fair enough but they won't kick us out on the back of this one match. so far they said they only might if it happens again. Ie against Wales we just have to ensure the known minority don't act like idiots inside the ground and preferably don't act like idiots outside it as well.

Marseille was always going to be a powder keg situation and unfortunately Lens seems a poor choice of host city for Wales vs England
