If Hodgson was PM it would be the end of Sterling.

People can harp on about the size of Iceland, but ultimately it was 11 vs 11. And only one team were organised with a clear plan, and a manager who knew what to do. They beat the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Turkey in qualifying , so they were clearly competent enough.

Iceland are a team. We were anything but a team. Being an expensive, highly paid star doesn't make you exempt from needing proper management and tactics.

That I do agree with, but I mentioned that before. Roy Hodgson is just as much to blame as the players on the pitch. He is a woeful, prehistoric, one dimensional, horrendous excuse for a manager.

What exactly did Hodgson achieve during the last World Cup that persuaded his bosses to give him another 2 years?

We were knocked out of that one before most teams had finished unpacking.

We've wasted the last two years.

Just something to add that's interesting. The top international sides have players all over Europe playing for them. I remember when England had half decent players like Hoddle Platt Waddle Mcmanaman Lineker etc. They were playing not in the top English league but all over Europe. Some of the England players if they get the chance should take the opportunities to play for top clubs abroad.
    Maybe that's the solution.

I must admit a certain smug satisfaction in being right.

"Drop Hart" I said. "Pooh Pooh!" they chortled.

"Rooney's awful" I said. "No, he's great. Man of the match" they said.

To be fair, the match after which you said Rooney was awful he had been man of the match. Last night he was awful.

Incredibly Rooney says he still wants to carry on playing for England. Has one country ever managed to humiliate itself as much in the space of four days before I wonder?

Conversely, as I pointed out before, the World Cup and Euro Championship winning German and Spanish sides mostly have players playing for their respective countries' domestic leagues, and mostly for the best clubs in those said leagues.

Maybe the problem is we aren't producing enough quality English players to begin with...

You see, that argument works if we just lost to a major nation. Someone like Germany or Italy or Belgium.

Can you honestly say that TECHNICALLY, Iceland are better than us? No. So they make up for it in organisation, effort and fight. That comes from the manager. Iceland's is a part time dentist. Roy Hodgson is a full time loser. Never won anything of note and has dined out on keeping Fulham up for years.

As someone else said, France play a title winning Leicester in their midfield. We left our version at home so Wayne could play and because he doesn't do skin cream adverts.

Of course he does. He wants that cap record. And I'm sure that any new manager coming in will be told to pick him so he can do that.

He's our best ever player you know.

Ironically if he'd been appointed back then that would have likely saved both his reputation and Blackburn from relegation.

That comment was more in relation to the bigger picture and speculating why England continue to fail in major tournaments. One semi final in any tournament and no wins in the knockout stage in the Euro Championships on foreign soil is an absolutely shocking record for a major footballing nation with supposedly one of the best leagues in the world.

In fairness, in the past if we qualified and got past the group stage we usually went out to a country with a better footballing pedigree than us or at worst a team from a country that aren't historically one of the greatest in football but happen to have a golden generation of players probably technically better than us overall (like Portugal on pens). But if we get the likes of Paraguay, Cameroon, Ecuador, Denmark etc. we normally progress.

Never in my wildest nightmares would I have dreamt that we'd lose to Iceland in by far our best chance to progress past the knock out stages in the Euros. It still hasn't sunk in for me as much as the depths we sunk to last night, just ****ing unbelievable.

    I am sad.

Not because we lost but because I am not surprised.Same old same old but that was the most spineless 45 minutes (didn't see first half) I have ever seen from an England team.

Well done Iceland.Love that steam train noise their fans make!

As usual, I now transfer my support to Italy.

It has nothing to do with it. It was the set up, the team selection, the tactics, the slowness, the poor passing, lack of penetration, etc. I remember after the Slovakia match that many pointed out the same issues, which you disagreed with in your post #556, even suggesting somewhere that we wanted to fail (I think it was you anyway).

Last nights result was why we were so annoyed after the Slovakia game. We are a pitiful team.

Erm I'd say based on last night that the Icelandic players are better technically. Especially as in the last decade or two Icelandic football has undergone a massive change and their coaching from a young age is based on technique. We had 100k a week players letting the ball roll under their foot, taking two touches to get the ball under control and being unable to keep a cross on the pitch.

England fans should boycott the national team.

All the FA care about is money, time to hit them where it hurts.

Pampered so called elite failing again and the answer is to throw money at academies with any showing a glimpse of talent immediately given huge salaries

Not sure what more depressing England under performing or the prospect of employing another failure like Southgate

Hope the hyping of the premier league as being the best in the world and bigging up players like Kane and Sterling by the likes of sky stops but I doubt it will. We are miles behind Spain and Germany and the likes of Juventus in Italy.

Hope the calls for winter break stop ....... would be mortified if we have a break just when we need a bit of winter cheer so the lovelies don't get tired and England have a better chance in tournaments.

I've decided I'm not renewing. Every membership period I feel I get screwed over by the FA more and more. We're rewarded with 'caps' based on the games we attend. The more caps the more chance of away tickets and finals tickets. It used to be 2 for an away game and 1 for home. This time they made it 2 for home games as well in an attempt to make more peope attend that awful Wembley stadium thus giving people who only attend home games a much better chance of getting tickets for the tournements. Not to mention it's 75 quid every 2 years and for that I get the hassle of having to pick up tickets at a location chosen by the FA and treated with contempt by the minnions working for the FA. I've done 12 years travelling around the world watching the national team and had a great time but enough is enough. Add to that I don't fancy visiting Russia for 2 weeks in 2018...

Glad to hear it and I know someone who is doing the exact same thing.

That's the only way the FA will do any listening, if fans vote with their feet. Yes, they have their mega bucks deals with Nike and others who influence selection policies but a half empty Wembley Stadium every single game might change a few views.

Let's be honest, if England were a club side, we'd have thrown our season tickets on the pitch a long time ago.

I said the same after Brazil but it is like a drug and day I won't be going to Russia but I know I will, I have been doing it for 20 years now, have some great memories and seen some places I would not have, also met some great friends on the way, it will only hit me when Iceland line up against France at the weekend. The FA treat the fans like dirt but I will be stupid enough to pay my £70 yet again to have the inconvenience of having to waste a couple of hours of my trip collecting my tickets as they wont post them to me! Really did fancy us in this tournament !
