[NOT HAPPENING] Etienne Capoue

  1. Why on earth would the club deliberately set out to piss off the fans? Think about it for a minute. It's completely irrational.

I think they may have set out to deliberately piss off one fan. And it’s worked.

    I'm a bit confused.

Many people on here have berated each player individually and collectively as a team, saying they're not good enough.
The squad has been criticised for being too old.
It has a bad attitude running through it and that the 'toxic culture' needs to be removed.

But now that squad is being broken up it seems we don't want them to actually leave?

We've a no nonsense head coach which was what we wanted.
At the moment the younger and more successful players previously out on loan are coming back. That's what we wanted.
Giraldi has seemingly been sidelined to some extent. A good thing.

We rarely hear about incoming transfers until the last moment so when a lot of players leave, lots of players will also replace them.
They may not be players we've heard of, know much about or rate but we're not going to replace established Premier League players like for like. We have to start again.

Getting the squad age & wage bill down will be a massive undertaking and this season there's less time to do it in.
I'm glad we're not getting the usual inane platitudes and instead are concentrating on working on where it is most important. On the training pitch and in the transfer market (fingers crossed!!)

We can't control any of what the hierarchy do and will never agree they're doing it the right way or the way we'd do it personally. But the one thing they won't do is set out to deliberately ruin their own investment.
Whether we like it or not, a certain amount of trust has to be placed in those in charge to get it right. That is their primary objective after all.

Slag the owners off and have a go at the players but when you call for change and change happens, it seems a bit strange to then criticise the club for doing it.

And by showing a cluster of Uncle Ken Sema photo's earlier today don't be surprised if he isn't sold tomorrow!
Oh, the academy team, not the U23s, lost 1-2 to Portsmouth today. We're getting relegated. ******* Pozzo's.

Much more likely that the Social Media team are operating entirely independently of anyone co-ordinating transfer policy. They're also likely to be targeting the wider fanbase, not those who are following niche media reports and posting on forums.

You could argue that this should be more joined up and the comms team are briefed not to post anything about any players where there is certain sensitivity around their future, but I suspect such an approach is also impractical and could fuel the rumour mill.

Agree with most except I don’t trust the hierarchy at all to get things right. Financially or player wise. And I also don’t trust them not to sack the manager if we have a slow start while he is implementing his ideas with whatever set of players we end up with.

I think the problem is that in a squad that is so rancid and there are so few players we'd want to see here this season, that when one of the only ones we hoped and even thought would stay is heavily linked to leaving, whilst we are linked with utter crap like Mawson, it's hard to suddenly feel positive.

The way it looks is that we are going to lose anyone we faintly hoped might magically stay (Capoue, Deulofeu, Sarr - sorry, no chance he is actually here by the end of the window) and keep the utter crap we hoped would finally piss off in the likes of Gray, Deeney, Cleverley etc.

I get that completely. But a sense of realism is needed because we've just been relegated so our better players are unlikely to stay, no matter how much we want them to.

Same reason we need to keep £100m+ worth of players to get promoted, yet somehow managed to get promoted before with a load of Udinese cast offs.

The same reason Vydra has always been the answer to our striking prayers based on him being good for us in the championship, despite him being third choice at Burnley and never performing at Premier league level.... yet our players that have performed at Premier league level somehow won’t be able to perform in the championship.

    It’s all very confusing.

If only we could get them to sign contracts so we would be able to keep them. I wish something like that was invented.

It'd be OK if we were even being linked with making some remotely exciting/astute signings, but we're not, we're being linked with other clubs turds and nothing else.

I have absolutely zero faith in this clubs ability to recognise what we actually need and recruit for it with even the slightest semblance of competence any more.

  15. The Recluse

Think about it for a moment HB1.

If a player or players used to playing in the top division for a while don't want to be at the club because we've been relegated, it's probably best to ship them out and get ones who want to be here instead.

Keep a lot of the squad which lost so many games last season who don't really want to be here and get off to a bad start would be a nightmare. Transfer window slammed shut and we'd be stuck with a squad for several months spiralling even further down the league.

At least with a new coach and a new set of players we'll have a chance to halt that losing mentality before the season starts and their heads won't slump if we start badly.

And they're not cattle. You can't force people to stay where they don't want to be irrespective of them signing a contract.

That’s the reality of relegation though, surely. We’ll lose our better players and they’ll be replaced with worse ones, not better. The standard of player we are able to sign was always going to drop dramatically with relegation.

A lot of the players are more than capable of doing a job. Before last season we were vaguely laughing about challenging for Europe before the dip after the FA Cup Semi final. We've gone from that to relegated. The team beat the errr, lets make sure I get this right as the bin bagger fans have said it once or twice, the "champions of England, champions of Europe and the champions of the world" on aggregate last season, and I think that's why some are reluctant to see some go. They are very capable, just the application, the drive and the passion isn't there. We somehow got a lot worse in 1 season without losing anyone, and investing in some quality.

So now that we're in the Championship we suddenly completely lose the ability to make any sort of astute signings and can only expect to sign literal crap? Yes, the quality will be lower, but being linked with failed, injury prone s**te like Mawson is beyond that.

It's clear as day that our recruitment over the past few years on the whole has been laughable and that we don't really know what we're doing any more. Losing all of our better players whilst keeping Deeney, Gray, Cleverley etc. etc. and looking at bringing in players like Mawson is asking, as IRB said, to become the next Stoke.

  20. The Recluse

It's pretty rare for the club to be linked early with players we actually sign. The rumour game is great fun though!

And the club have made some good signings over the years, they've not all been duds. Some have been baffling and sometimes they just disappear into a puff of smoke. Who wants predictable though!

Change is happening because it needed to happen and it's kind of irrelevant if we hear rumours of who's coming beforehand or not. They will come. Not just on the pitch either but throughout the club. We've a new sporting director or whatever Giaretta is called and are advertising for a new head of recruitment for the academy. A new head coach is in place and new players will come. It's going to be chaos but I personally am glad it's come about.

Who says we’re signing Mawson. Somebody on Twitter? When we sign players it tends to happen before it hits social media. It’s just a rumour and most rumours are just that and have nothing to back them up

  22. NathWFC

It's exactly the sort of signing we'd make. Much like Dawson. A bang average defender that we chased in the past and knew we could get on the cheap now. So many other clubs seem to be able to unearth gems, bring in young talent from the lower leagues and develop them, yet here we are with our Dawson's and Mawson's.

Best scouting network in the world.

A £100m blackhole in our finances and the sudden inability to recruit pretty much anybody from a top league, or even many with aspirations to play in a top league was hardly going to change that was it?

If our recruitment had been laughable it was only ever going to be several rungs below laughable with relegation.

  25. NathWFC

But you're missing my point. I'm not expecting us to go out and sign world class talent, but we are being reported as looking at truly baffling signings like Mawson, that's what's concerning.

There's not having Premier League money and pull any more, and then there's literally just not having a clue what we're doing and displaying utter incompetence and lack of transfer market nous.

There have been plenty of very good suggestions by posters on here with sound reasoning as to why they'd be good and realistic signings for us, but our recruitment "strategy" is simply rotten and not fit for purpose.

The team became stale. As you say, as individuals they're fine but it went wrong as a whole because we kept everyone. We paid the price with relegation in not putting pressure on the established spine of the team. Alex Ferguson said years ago there was as much need to change a winning side than a losing one because of complacency. That's what we became, complacent.

Yeah it's crap but it's happened. Personally I got sick of seeing the same players getting picked and losing. There's no guarantee they'd perform at their highest standard if the squad was kept largely the same in the Championship either. As I said earlier, there have been many on here who bemoaned how old the squad is. Now the club have a chance to change that and start again. If we don't go up then sell off the better players and start again, again. But whatever happens from now, there's no way that squad should or could have stayed largely the same.

There was always gonna be a time where Capoue, arguably our best player of this recent Premier League era, but getting on a bit in years now, was going to have to leave, and I don't think anyone was under the impression that he'd play every game this season, but that's not to say that we want him to leave at all. I'm sure we can squeeze one more year out of him before he heads back home or something, but now it looks like we won't even get that. Risky move, very risky with the way our midfield looks at the moment

Must say I’m not sure I saw this one coming. At 32 I was hoping he’d be the experienced legs in the midfield that might survive any cull.

That said, what a brilliant signing for us over the last 5 years. If this is the end of the road with us, fair play and all the best to Caps. I wouldn’t begrudge him another season in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Are you talking about Messi here? Because as you've just found out, even players under contract can have clauses that allow them to leave in certain circumstances whether their club wants them to or not.

I think what’s happening is a lot of our fans are still in the denial stage of grief or maybe only moved on to anger. Until now we’ve mostly been on a upward trajectory over the past eight years, always hoping and expecting for a few exciting signings to propel us to the next level again.

The reality is we’ve been relegated and for the first time we’re firmly on a downward trajectory. Being in the denial stage, people are still surprised at our better players being linked with moves away and surprised that we’re not being linked with better players rather than worse ones.

The reality is now we’re a championship club; Mawson is every bit the equivalent of us signing Dawson as a premier league club, their names even rhyme. We’re no longer a premier league club so it’s exactly the type of player we’ll be looking at, someone actually worse than Dawson, not better.

I don't think that's the conclusion one can draw from this, look at the rumour threads of Doucs, Del and Pereyra leaving for a contrast with most on here being more okay and accepting of it. It's more that Capoue is one of our few players with quality who both did perform for most of last season and also who fans had a reasonable hope would stay and be influential in a promotion push. People won't be as bothered about most of our other players possibly leaving.

Not sure I get the point of that, when is the option to buy, in a year? If he’s leaving, at 33 we should be looking to sell now not later. He could get injured and his talent/motivation could drop off a cliff at any second.
