There's no way the club would be releasing a public statement saying Capoue and Pereyra had requested moves unless a deal was imminent. It would undermine their negotiations. I suspect we'll see them both move very shortly, probably before the weekend. I don't begrudge Capoue the move. He's far too good for the Championship, much as I would have liked to see him stay, and unlike Sarr he has so little time left in his career that he can't afford to be slumming it in a division for a year. Sarr will improve from playing in this league, not the least because it will toughen up his physical game. Capoue won't; he's already the player he's going to be, and there's zero benefit to him in staying. I can't hold someone wanting to make the most of their very short career against them.
I would assume both their deals are at a pretty advanced stage for them to say that to be fair Arakel. It’s SO refreshing to have decent official communication to go off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Absolutely. You don't put out a team composed of mostly low-to-no appearance academy players with a few just-back-from-injury peripheral first team players and have a bench of 6 players if you want to go through. I am 100% sure he wanted to go out. He wanted to go out last time, too, but Sema and Pedro didn't get the memo.
I know your feelings on Gino but having a pop at giving Capoue a long contract seems a bit much. He's thoroughly deserved it and would still have been an important player had we stayed up. As it stands we might even get some money for him. He's made mistakes but this isn't one of them
Yep. But the “transfer request” will soften the blow when it turns out that it was a free transfer and we are covering 25% of his salary for the next 2 years.
He has nothing but my best wishes, even if he instigated the move away, I'm sure the club are more than happy to get his wages off the books. The Capoue of the last few years would absolutely wreck the Championship, but there's no guarantee that at 32 he could do that, so if he wants to go, get it done
I don't blame him for leaving one bit. It felt like we'd signed a superstar when he joined. The most glamorous signing we'd ever made. We are Watford and we'd ******* arrived. His signing paved the way for pereyra, deulofeu and all the rest. And now we're picking up the Glenn Murray on a free. It's over.
All the transfer request does is forfeit the loyalty bonus owed to a contracted player when they are sold. We would have insisted that the money we owe Capoue comes from Valencia. Capoue handing in a transfer request will reduce the cost of the transfer for Valencia and should expedite the transfer. Gino will still pocket the same money
Absolutely disagree. No need to give 30 year olds 5 year contracts. Capoue is one of my favourite players but that doesn’t stop me thinking a contract till he is 35 is wrong, especially for a midfielder.
Shame he’s going . I was holding out some hope he might stay . At his best he was magnificent and c a joy to watch . We now need to sign at least 2 decent championship quality players in midfield to be competitive this year.
Very bizarre from the club to announce the news as a casual aside in a news release pretending to be mainly about team news, which was a day before the pre-match press conference when we’d normally expect it.
8 million pounds well spent generally - even more so when you consider what we have spent almost as much or more on since!
Yep. I suspect a lot more than just the two players have requested a move, but their names won't be released before transfers have been set up. Deals for Capoue and Pereyra in all probability are close to completion, so the club are happy to name them.
I wondered if we'd signed the invisible man when we didn't name all the subs, or if someone just missed the coach
What are these loyalty bonuses and how much are they worth, as never heard of them until this transfer to be honest. It does feel like Capoue has tried to help broker a deal between Watford and Valencia throughout the summer, so could be the thing that breaks the deadlock between the sides.
Going by FM they are bonuses that are paid to the players if they fulfill their contracts. They are most likely 6 figure sums possibly 1 or 2 million depending on the contract. If a player officially requests a transfer they automatically forfeit the bonus.
Ok. So I guess if the club isn't 'loyal' to the player and decide to sell them before their contract expires, the club has to pay whatever remains of the bonus? If EC has 2/3 years left that could be quite substantial.
Lol fair point. I imagine they do so e consultation around typical player contracts when designing the game though.
On the game anyway, but I don't know about real life (I'm sure we'll be trying to wangle our way out of it, Gino went to Harvard you know!). As we've established, it looks like we'll swerve that with Capoue though anyway
I do not begrudge EC leaving as he has been a good loyal player for us, but it should be a clean break not a loan, otherwise we should not let him go IMO.
Well he's a 32 year old on relatively big wages, there aren't going to be many clubs offering a fee for his services. Obviously he's played his last game for us, will probably be a loan with a view to a permanent deal
I hope not, though I suppose if whoever he goes to does not take up the permanent deal and we get promoted he would be available to us again if we wanted him.
But then we risk having to pay him at 34 and 35 in championship after the club who loans him gets his best final year. Better to compromise on a lower fee now I think and remove this risk.
