Yes. I can't get into a sport where the result doesn't rely seem to matter. Went to see a couple of rugby matches as a corporate guest. One was a "England a trillion, Italy 3" type match with the winners known before the start and confirmed within 90 seconds. The only reason to go seemed to be to drink beer. I prefer to do that at home or in my local.
Not sure anyone said he's doing a terrible job? Do you think he has achieved enough to deserve an OBE as a national hero?
You say this a lot based off the fact I was critical of the team when we lost 5-0 to Liverpool. The reality is my posts when we beat Palace, Cardiff and even the draw with Brighton were positive. My posts about Gracia this season have always been positive. I gave Mariappa a free pass after his blunder against Palace because he has been excellent since Xmas despite his limitations. If you want me to clap a 5-0 loss then it isn't going to happen. As for what is wrong with Kane??? A serial cheat who feels the need to cover his mouth every time he grunts a syllable. Intensely dislikeable. Maguire seems a decent bloke to be fair.
Well, on the basis that the England cricket team all got honours after the 2005 Ashes, yes. In reality, probably not. And I agree that there is too much hype. But that is just the media in this country, isn’t it? It’s not Southgate’s fault. I just don’t understand the constant need to undermine. Why not just enjoy England performing well? It happens infrequently enough, after all.
The people who dislike the England team because it is populated by rival clubs’ players are beginning to behave like ‘Big 6’ fans.
No strong allegiance (as Bucks are Minor Counties). I tend to support a) the game & b) certain players. Bishan Bedi, Barry Richards, Proctor, most of the Windians of that time, the other Richards, Dredge, Sanga. Of more recent players, Lionel Palairet has caught my eye.
How is describing on a Watford FC forum that you don't believe that Southgate deserves an OBE for the World Cup undermining him?
My post was directed more at Jumbo’s responses. Perhaps “undermine” was too strong a word. “Seeking out the negatives” would capture my intended meaning better, with hindsight.
You are aware that the same system that awarded an OBE for Southgate also knighted Sir Bruce Forsyth? The bar is not set very high .
Yes I'm aware. Much as he left me cold, he was a key name in British light entertainment for 40 years. Southgate won 3 and lost 3 matches at a world cup as England manager.
I imagine he would put his thumbs in the armhole of his waistcoat to do so. Southgate to tapdance rather SBF to play football.
I can suspend my emotions and disbelief I’ve hated England for years. Since 1996 the absolute ******** that was the Golden generation of ******* losers, the persistence of playing that granny loving teat Rooney, the disappointment. Last year changed it for me, we are genuine contenders for a top 4 finish in the euros and world games Between England playing important games I hate Southgate and his hatred for Deeney, his ignorance of players outside the top 6 teams But I find I’ll support them now. Undoubtedly supporting and developing young English players with talent is the way forward. I’d prefer he realised he needs to choose some Watford players, he might choose one or two eventually as we establish ourselves. This is the most successful we have been since 1966 I’ll give him the benefit even with Pickford. Give him time.
I hate the England players like sterling when they play against us but I can like them when they score for England because they are a young team. Only that. Trust in our youth do what Germany and Spain did build an England team
Quite impressed with the team, even had the decency to sing (or mutter) the National Anthem something that not all players have done in the past! Shows Southgate has got them singing from the same song sheet in more ways than one!
I like the fact the Southgate is keen to promote youth and not hang on to past "golden generation" players who were clearly not going to improve England's fortunes having not been able to so do in their prime. Rooney's appearance last year was clearly a one-off.
England are looking a right good team at the moment. Talent in all areas. I think this is the beginning of something special. I wasn't convinced with England at the WC even though they got to the semi's, but since then they've looked very impressive.
