Well, probably your first mistake is believing the BBC's paraphrasing tells the whole story. The actual statement released by Dorset Police asks 'the media and general public' not to speculate, which is a common request from the police where the identity of a suspect is withheld. It's mainly aimed at the former. And obviously this case has had enormous media interest but also some pretty crackers involvement from the public too. Bombarding Gurnesey Police with tips, sightings and conspiracy theories. Talk of missiles and Sala being alive on some rocks or whatever. I imagine Dorset have had something similar. I'm pretty sure the police aren't suggesting you have a totally blank mind when you hear the reports though. You're free to speculate in your own head or down the pub or whatever.

As for how it can hinder an investigation - first, just because one person has been arrested it doesn't mean other potential suspects in the same chain are aware of that. Sometimes decent evidence comes out in the period where a suspect is cut loose and starts talking. Second, because every time the media goes big on something the senior investigators have to consider a response, rather than getting on with the investigation itself. And third, we've seen how the media can trash people who've only been arrested, when being arrested isn't a crime in itself. If (worst case scenario) the arrested person ends up topping themselves because of the scrutiny the investigation is certainly hindered.

Thanks for the response but have you informed the BBC and Daily Flail of this?
I think they need to know and report /explain better and not speculate.

The media generally don't care and do what they want. They will rarely keep anything under their hats unless ordered to by a judge in court.

Reports coming out that the crash appears to have been caused by a severe Carbon Monoxide leak into the cabin. This would have caused both pilot and passenger to lose consciousness, making a crash into the sea inevitable.

    Very sad indeed.

So moves away from pilot being under qualified to fly the plane which looked previously looked potentially be one of the major reasons for the crash

A fault with the aircraft does not exonerate the fact that the pilot was not qualified to fly it in those conditions. Obviously had he been fully qualified to take on the flight, the report of high levels of CO in the aircraft would have led to the same outcome.

Have Cardiff paid the transfer fee to Nantes yet?

Been told to pay 5.3 million which was the first instalment.

Cardiff might be quite happy with that considering Nantes wanted 15 million.

Nantes will almost certainly still get the rest of it when the next installments become due.

I continue to be disgusted by Cardiff's behavior on this.

That's my interpretation, they've just had to pay what was owed to date. Cardiff and their fans are still in denial but I imagine they have to pursue all legal options to satisfy their insurers

No surprise to hear Cardiff are appealing the decision.

There seems to be some suggestion it's all being driven by insurers. If that's true, they probably wouldn't pay out unless all legal avenues to avoid liability were exhausted first. I imagine Cardiff would rather the PR people were driving it and they could just make the whole thing go away.

I suspect Cardiff have been caught in the brief window where they are liable for the transfer fee but their insurers are claiming he was not yet covered by their insurance.

So adversarial. 50/50 split concerning a young man's tragic death? Nope. Legal parasites have to make a buck.

Great tribute from the Nantes fans.

And many of the Cardiff fans also want a line drawn under this and the money paid up. However the hierarchies of both clubs need to answer questions especially involving the use of the McKays as agents especially when one is unlicensed. It's still all ery murky as to what exactly was paid and promised over and under the table. And football agents don't want more regulation ? Parasites most of them.

Thing is, for all the glamour and money young men are earning at the top of the game, beneath the surface, most are treated like cattle - assets to be shipped around where they can realise most ROI with little choice in their own destiny.

Sure, the big names can decide their own fate, to some degree and it's hard to feel sympathy for a 24 year old millionaire, but it's likely that often a young man, often with a young family, is told unilaterally that they are being sent to the other side of Europe at a day's notice, because that's how the cards are falling.

Maybe relevant, maybe not, but it seems that as long as multiple other parties stand to make big money, footballers will be dehumanised in the process.

Yes - seems this Henderson guy still went ahead with getting the chap to fly the plane knowing he wasn’t qualified.

Fay Keely, who owned the plane, had told Henderson not to allow Mr Ibbotson to pilot the plane again after being contacted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) about two airspace infringements he had committed.

Despite this, Henderson allowed Mr Ibbotson to continue flying, and his message to the pilot read: "We both have an opportunity to make money out of the business model but not if we upset clients or draw the attention of the CAA."

Sentenced to a paltry eighteen months for his criminal actions and flouting of laws made by the CAA to protect life. The audacity of the defence lawyer in threatening an appeal as well. Morality and the law often do not mingle.

If you care to read the judge’s sentencing remarks you’ll see “that there is no evidence that the matters giving rise to the offences for which you have been found or pleaded guilty were responsible for the subsequent crash of the aircraft.” They’re quite technical offences and ultimately it was pilot Ibbotson who has to take the vast majority of the blame for what happened.

    https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/R-v-Henderson-Sentencing-Remarks-12.11.21.pdf

And I don’t really understand why proposing to appeal is in any way audacious or immoral. Morally no one should spend time in prison if they’re not guilty of a criminal offence and everyone is entitled to a defence.

The full inquest is next year so it'll be then that i guess more will be uncovered - it seems there are a number of factors that led to the tragic event.
