I will take issue with you. If you think the FA is inept and badly run then in comparison to the AFA it is the best run most efficient and forward thinking organization in existence.

The AFA is corrupt, run by people who know nothing about football and has been riddled by corruption such that in excess of £100M has disappeared during the tenure of the former president the infamous and thankfully dead Julio Grondona.

Argentina had a terrible four year cycle with Martino being replaced after the 2016 Copa America or rather resigning because he was not paid his salary along with his staff and teams in dispute with the AFA refused to release players for the Rio Olympics. Bauza was appointed and was quickly removed when missing qualification for the WC was a distinct possibility. Sampaoli came in paying his own salary and during his tenure constantly tampered with tactics, players as you saw in the World Cup and in general lost the plot and now cannot be removed because the AFA cannot pay the remainder of his contract and are trying to find a way to force him out.

In the midst of omitting several outstanding young players like Asascibar (a better version of Kante) but retaining Biglia, Icardi, Pezzella and not even playing Lo Celso for a minute another of Sampaoli's bizarre ideas was to play Acuna and Salvio as fullbacks.

Now many modern fullbacks have been converted from wingers. Our own Kiko Femenia for example. Jordi Alba another to name just two. However it takes time for a winger to learn what is required to be a fullback. A couple of seasons usually and even then the experiment can fail.

Salvio was given the small matter of a month to learn his role before being thrown in at the deep end. No wonder he looked all at sea but then aside from the first half against Nigeria the whole Argentina team looked all over the place because of a lack of clear direction from the manager on tactics and playing players out of position. Salvio is a winger and a clever and tricky one at that who regularly creates chances and scores. He has a great temperament and dedication to his job and even while forced into the role of fullback gave it his all. To be linked with a player of his calibre in his natural position as an out and out winger is fantastic. Delofeu on one side, Salvio on the other whoever is playing upfront will have more than enough service to thrive.
