Honestly, if I lived somewhere that was the case, I wouldn't own a dog that needed long, off-lead walks every day.

Thanks for pointing that out, I’d seen it but had never even read it or realised it was attached to Bwood’s posts either. That’s the misses Christmas present sorted then!

As a dog owner I object to all the plastic bags, empty beer cans, sweet wrappers and other **** people just drop in parks. No wonder people walk dogs on sports fields if the park areas are fouled by humans leaving their rubbish.

Yeah, because all dog owners really are the scum of the earth, aren’t they? With absolutely no concern for other people.

    Jeez.

Well, I’m glad to learn that blanket stereotyping based upon pure prejudice is alive and well.

If anything I always find that, in the main, dog owners are the most considerate people as they are looking after an animal. I would say that they are the least likely to be swilling beer, chewing gum and smoking dozens of fags then depositing their crap on the ground. I see more chewing gum and fag ends on the pavement and in public areas than I see dog excrement. I am not condoning those owners who fail to clean up after their animals which is disgusting but I think you will find that there is more rubbish dropped by humans than the dog droppings you complain about. Just take a walk along the side of any main road and see how much rubbish is deposited by uncaring people.

Yeah, but stepping on a fag butt or crisp packet is not such a big deal as a newly laid steaming dog egg, is it?

I have a canine master so I should be outraged by your comment but this did make me laugh. Now the dog is confused and has gone into the garden to give me something to pick up.

No I am not saying that and I think you know it. What I am saying is that the accumulation of rubbish left lying around is dangerous to my dog and all animals. I could suggest that your comment means you find it acceptable to leave crisp packets and fag ends on the floor but I am sure you don't feel that way.

As a side note I actually find chewing gum to be far harder to remove from clothing than anything. I notice you didn't mention this issue in your reply even though the comment to which you replied mentioned it.

To lighten the mood, isn't it excellent that it is mere dog excrement under discussion?

In San Francisco the topic du jour is human excrement & the surfeit thereof on the city's streets.

Most correspondents are firmly in the Anti camp.

(Informative article in The Economist over the summer.)

If it was humorous, fine. It’s just that there seem to be an awful lot of generalisations being made on this thread. The truth is, there are tossers in every group of society, but - like most other people - football fans, parents, you name it - the vast majority of dog owners are perfectly responsible. I have never once not picked up after my dog and I wouldn’t dream of not doing so.

I trailed round Aylesbury & Hemel, into nasty pubs in north London, following this lot. Enduring the longueurs of the Stiff tour, patchy public transport & terrifying moped journeys to places like Hatfield.

The highlight of the gig was when Wotsizface had shuffled off & the band were unleashed to play an extended outro to Blockheads.

    Sheer joy.

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed on sports pitches, end of. I say that as a dog owner and somebody who used to play Saturday/Sunday football often on a minefield of dog ****.

If your only place to walk a dog is a park with a sports pitch don’t let your dog off of the lead and don’t let it on the actual pitch.

If you need to be able to let your dog off and there is nowhere within walking distance, get in your car and take them somewhere nice.

If you don’t have a car and want to be able to let your dog off, don’t get a dog if your only option is a sports pitch.

If you’re old and infirm get a a dog walker or just take it round the block.

Admittedly I have an unusual situation in so much as my dog is an assistance dog for my son and therefore essential for his well being. The dog needs a minimum of 1 hour 20 min a day free running time. As I work from 9.00am until 5.30pm I cannot walk the dog during the day or take a car journey to an open space large enough for my dog. The nearest park is within walking distance but has five football pitches spread across the area of the park along with childrens play areas. I get up at 5.00am each week morning to make sure that the dog has his free play time (partly walking across pitches) and I still have time to do everything I need to do before I go to work. If I had to drive to another large park I would have to get up at around 4.00am every day at which point it is hardly worth going to bed at all or going to bed almost as soon as I have eaten after work and not help my wife look after my son during the evenings.

If I was stopped from walking my dog across the parks football pitches I would have to either give up the dog which benefits my son or have an even tougher life than we already have with a disabled child. My dog is trained to toilet on command so I can control his mess most of the time but every now and again he does what comes natural during his free running time which I clear up so absolutely no inconvenience to anyone.

As mentioned already in an earlier comment, the park I use is frequently covered in litter which I would have thought was as much of a concern. I don't see those using the sports fields clearing their discarded plastic water bottles, chewing gum wrappers or fruit remains which can be harmful to animals.

a19tgg, you have come up with what you see as nice simple solutions but simple doesn't fit everyones life.

Sorry, clearly I should’ve said any sort of assistance dog should be excluded from the above. But not If you’re an able bodied member of the public.
