I suspect this will become an issue/already is one. It will depend on a few factors.... 1) Liverpool's desire to recoup something for him, as his value will drop (expiring contract plus lack of playing time) 2) The player's perception of his own value - does he think he's primed for a large contract 3) Based on the above, what is his agent's strategy.

GP will either want a load with an option to buy, or signing to a long-term deal now. However, if the player/agent think the bloke is due a large rise in wages - it's likely a non-starter. Liverpool, in the absence of a straight sale, will want a loan deal with a guaranteed buy trigger clause in it based on appearances, etc..

Isn't that only the case if they actually try and renew his contract?

Nope. He is free to talk to European clubs from then but not domestic.
Not that it would make a difference with agents nowadays anyway - they’d just do the deal and keep it quiet until the contract expires. And then agent would take an even larger pound of flesh obviously.

If only we had a club in Europe through which to filter such deals

Liverpool and Spurs are very similar when it comes to selling players that haven’t quite made the grade with them. They think that because they signed them in the first place that makes them more valuable.

I had a client once who imported lobsters from somewhere in Europe and then kept them in Scotland for a couple of months before selling them on. He could charge a massive premium because they were technically from Scotland even though they actually were not. Liverpool seem to think they can do this with the players they no longer want.

£26m is outrageous for a player who is near the end of their contract. They are just hoping for some desperate club to take leave of their senses and panic into splashing that sort of cash to avoid missing out later on. Assuming nobody is that stupid I’d imagine you could pick him up for close to half that fee in the last couple of days of the window.

It would be insane business, another Pozzo masterclass. Swapping a 23 year Belgium international with a lot of potential for a 30 year old with the mobility of a piece of gammon for £4m. Please god let it be true.

Just watched some highlights of Origi I as didn’t really know what type of player he is .

He’s fast, skilful and very good in the air which we desperately need.
Couldn’t really see what his hold play was like which is key to playing lone role up front .

Starting to warm to this one , especially as he’s still 23. Must have gone to Liverpool when he was 18, so no wonder he struggled to establish himself.

It's a lot of money for potential. Not £50m of potential of course but still a lot!

Bit overboard on Origi but I guess I see the argument.

Agreed. Man was on fire during the World Cup.

If we sign the ******* world Cup leading goalscorer for £19m, it'd be crazy!

Apparently his wages are only £28k per week! Imagine shifting Deeney and getting him in on a third of his wages.

Shifting Deeney could be difficult though.

    Because he's fat.

Takes some effort to move him.

    Allegedly.

Is that all? Only £28,000 per week!

What a loser. That barely even runs into a 6 figure take home for the month.

I wouldn't get out of bed for that sort of pittance.

After income tax, more like £80k per month, out of which he will pay VAT on all his non food purchases.

But if he’s coming in to replace Deeney, his agent will know full well what wage Deeney was on and will act accordingly. His current Liverpool wage won’t dictate what he asks from us. And £19m is still a lot of someone who has done very little in his career.

I agree that the right move could kick start a promising career but it’s by no means guaranteed and I’d temper the excitement a bit. But he’s in the pool of striker profile we should be looking at.

  22. Beekayess

Maybe, but it will probably dictate what is acceptable as a new wage from Watford. If he's been on £28K per week and is offered £50K per week (say), then that would seem like a good deal to him. £50K per week would seem less appealing if he was already on £45K a week at Liverpool.

An 11% pay rise not appealing?

Can someone post an article on cheese and briefly throw in a Watford FC and javi Gracia reference and see if the NewsNow bots pick it up?

  29. Not that it is so important now a days, but would that make him home grown?

Three years at under 21 I think is the stipulation, but did he do the whole lot?

Relieved my opinion of him back here as held up reasonably well. He is looking quicker again than he was last season though. Now, if only we actually had taken him on loan and subsequently prevented the scousers winning the CL again.
