Announced record losses and store closures meaning 400 jobs will go.

But they have just opened a new store in Watford..

Is that going to help them?

The Watford Store looks like one of those which would be fine as a sort of flagship branding exercise but would make a loss for years. If they're losing money, they won't be able to support that. I can't see it lasting.

What would you go into Debenhams to buy? I can't think of a single thing that would make me say, "I'll try Debenhams first".

The store in WGC has had a smashed window for the last month.
I suspect it may be for the high jump.
    A feeble shop.

This is true, but why then is the high street/any high st always rammed on the rare occasions I visit it? What are people doing?

I genuinely think it's because they have nothing else to do. Mrs Diamond is a classic example of when she's bored she'll go for a look around the shops.

We wandered into Debenhams on our last shopping trip out as I needed some new clothes. **** me, it was a like a massive jumble sale. No mark brands mixed with recognisable ones, about two of every item only and rails of random crap all over the place. We walked out. It wasn't like that 10 years ago and now has all the hallmarks of a retailer on its knees.

Yes, probably so and for coffee. I think low value items still sell well, but for anything more pricey people will shop online.

Interestingly this popped up on the BBC front page today:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/d0438e75-f9fc-4a85-a5b4-ce3cc040e33d

"You also become aware of the emotions that drive you to want to spend money, like a hard week at work, and find other ways to manage those triggers. Rehearsing different responses then builds up new neural pathways in your brain, which make it easier to sustain different habits after your no-spend challenge is over.”

They have got serious branding problems then as they sell a good range of just about everything, including young fashion lines through concessions. Many of the shops are expansions as they start off small and take over adjacent stores, which means they are all over the place. One floor, for example, may have several levels, with steps in between. Lifts or stairs that serve only part of the shop, nooks and crannies and confusing merchandising layouts. They can be awful places to shop.
